Abstract

We study the twirling semigroups of (super) operators, namely certain quantum dynamical semigroups that are associated, in a natural way, with the pairs formed by a projective representation of a locally compact group and a convolution semigroup of probability measures on this group. The link connecting this class of semigroups of operators with (classical) Brownian motion is clarified. It turns out that every twirling semigroup associated with a finite-dimensional representation is a random unitary semigroup, and, conversely, every random unitary semigroup arises as a twirling semigroup. Using standard tools of the theory of convolution semigroups of measures and of convex analysis, we provide a complete characterization of the infinitesimal generator of a twirling semigroup associated with a finite-dimensional unitary representation of a Lie group.

On a Certain Class of Semigroups of Operators

Paolo Aniello

We define an interesting class of semigroups of operators in Banach spaces, namely, the randomly generated semigroups. This class contains as a remarkable subclass a special type of quantum dynamical semigroups introduced in the early 1970s by Kossakowski. Each randomly generated semigroup is associated, in a natural way, with a pair formed by a representation or an antirepresentation of a locally compact group in a Banach space and by a convolution semigroup of probability measures on this group. Examples of randomly generated semigroups having important applications in physics are briefly illustrated.

Quantum dynamical semigroups, group representations and convolution semigroups

Paolo Aniello

Semigroups of operators are known to play an important role in theoretical physics. In particular, quantum dynamical semigroups are fundamental in the theory of open quantum systems. We will describe a class of semigroups of operators which has interesting applications, for instance, in quantum information science. Each of these semigroups of operators is generated, in a suitable way, by a representation (or an antirepresentation) of a group in a Banach space and by a convolution semigroup of probability measures on that group. Some significant examples—including a remarkable type of quantum dynamical semigroups introduced by Kossakowski in the pioneering times of the theory of open quantum systems—and their mutual relations will be discussed.

A class of stochastic products on the convex set of quantum states

Paolo Aniello

Abstract We introduce the notion of stochastic product as a binary operation on the convex set of quantum states (the density operators) that preserves the convex structure, and we investigate its main consequences. We consider, in particular, stochastic products that are covariant wrt a symmetry action of a locally compact group. We then construct an interesting class of group-covariant, associative stochastic products, the so-called twirled stochastic products . Every binary operation in this class is generated by a triple formed by a square integrable projective representation of a locally compact group, by a probability measure on that group and by a fiducial density operator acting in the carrier Hilbert space of the representation. The salient properties of such a product are studied. It is argued, in particular, that, extending this binary operation from the density operators to the whole Banach space of trace class operators, this space becomes a Banach algebra, a so-called twirled stochastic algebra . This algebra is shown to be commutative in the case where the relevant group is abelian. In particular, the commutative stochastic products generated by the Weyl system are treated in detail. Finally, the physical interpretation of twirled stochastic products and various interesting connections with the literature are discussed.

Operators versus functions: from quantum dynamical semigroups to tomographic semigroups

Paolo Aniello

Quantum mechanics can be formulated in terms of phase-space functions, according to Wigner's approach. A generalization of this approach consists in replacing the density operators of the standard formulation with suitable functions, the so-called generalized Wigner functions or (group-covariant) tomograms, obtained by means of group-theoretical methods. A typical problem arising in this context is to express the evolution of a quantum system in terms of tomograms. In the case of a (suitable) open quantum system, the dynamics can be described by means of a quantum dynamical semigroup 'in disguise', namely, by a semigroup of operators acting on tomograms rather than on density operators. We focus on a special class of quantum dynamical semigroups, the twirling semigroups, that have interesting applications, e.g., in quantum information science. The 'disguised counterparts' of the twirling semigroups, i.e., the corresponding semigroups acting on tomograms, form a class of semigroups of operators that we call tomographic semigroups . We show that the twirling semigroups and the tomographic semigroups can be encompassed in a unique theoretical framework, a class of semigroups of operators including also the probability semigroups of classical probability theory, so achieving a deeper insight into both the mathematical and the physical aspects of the problem.

Quantum Random Walks and Quantum Oscillator in an Infinite-Dimensional Phase Space

Vladimir Mikhailovich Busovikov, Alexander Nikolaevich Pechen, Vsevolod Zhanovich Sakbaev

We consider quantum random walks in an infinite-dimensional phase space constructed using Weyl representation of the coordinate and momentum operators in the space of functions on a Hilbert space which are square integrable with respect to a shift-invariant measure. We study unitary groups of shift operators in the phase space and averaging of such shifts by Gaussian vectors, which form semigroups of self-adjoint contractions: we find conditions for their strong continuity and establish properties of their generators. Significant differences in their properties allow us to show the absence of the Fourier transform as a unitary transformation that implements the unitary equivalence of these compressive semigroups. Next, we prove the Taylor formula for a certain special subset of smooth functions for shifting to a non-finite vector. It allows us to prove convergence of quantum random walks in the coordinate representation to the evolution of a diffusion process, as well as convergence of quantum random walks in both coordinate and momentum representations to the evolution semigroup of a quantum oscillator in an infinite-dimensional phase space. We find the special essential common domain of generators of semigroups arising in averaging of random shift operators both in position and momentum representations. The invariance of this common domain with respect to both semigroups allows to establish properties of a convex combination of both generators. That convex combination are Hamiltonians of infinite-dimentional quantum oscillators. Thus, we obtain that a Weyl representation of a random walk in an infinite dimensional phase space describes the semigroup of self-adjoint contractions whose generator is the Hamiltonian of an infinite dimensional harmonic oscillator.

Diffusion of quantum states generated by a classical random walk

Yu. N. Orlov, Vsevolod Zhanovich Sakbaev

We investigate a model that associates random walks in a finite-dimensional Euclidean coordinate space of a classical system with random quantum walks, i.e. random transformations of the set of states of a quantum system arising from quantization of a classical system. As is known, the convolution semigroup of Gaussian measures on a coordinate space admits a representation by a semigroup of self-adjoint contractions in the space of square-integrable functions described by the heat equation. We obtain a representation of the convolution semigroup of Gaussian measures on a coordinate space by a quantum dynamic semigroup in the space of nuclear operators. We give a description of the quantum dynamic semigroup by solutions of the Cauchy problem for a degenerate diffusion equation. We establish the generalized convergence in distribution of a sequence of quantum random walks to an operator-valued random process with values in the Abelian algebra of shift operators by a vector with a normal distribution.
