Abstract

We propose and demonstrate scheme for direct experimental testing of quantum commutation relations for Pauli operators. The implemented device is an advanced quantum processor that involves two programmable quantum gates. Depending on a state of two-qubit program register, we can test either commutation or anti-commutation relations. Very good agreement between theory and experiment is observed, indicating high-quality performance of the implemented quantum processor and reliable verification of commutation relations for Pauli operators.

Experimental Realization of Programmable Quantum Gate Array for Directly Probing Commutation Relations of Pauli Operators

We experimentally demonstrate an advanced linear-optical programmable quantum processor that combines two elementary single-qubit programmable quantum gates. We show that this scheme enables direct experimental probing of quantum commutation relations for Pauli operators acting on polarization states of single photons. Depending on a state of two-qubit program register, we can probe either commutation or anticommutation relations. Very good agreement between theory and experiment is observed, indicating high-quality performance of the implemented quantum processor.

Scheme for directly observing the noncommutativity of the position and the momentum operators with interference

Jong Chan Lee, Yong‐Su Kim, Young-Sik Ra +2 more

Although noncommutativity of a certain set of quantum operators (e.g., creation and annihilation operators and Pauli spin operators) has been shown experimentally in recent years, the commutation relation for the position and the momentum operators has not been directly demonstrated to date. In this paper we propose and analyze an experimental scheme for directly observing the noncommutativity of the position and the momentum operators using single-photon quantum interference. While the scheme is studied for the single-photon state as the input quantum state, the analysis applies equally to matter-wave interference, allowing a direct test of the position-momentum commutation relation with a massive particle.

Experimental Demonstration of Commutation Relations Using Intensity Correlations

Hans Dang, Sebastian Luff, Martin Fischer +4 more

The canonical commutation relation is a cornerstone of quantum theory and underlies the Heisenberg uncertainty principle. Although uncertainty relations have been extensively tested, direct verifications of the underlying commutation relation itself have remained elusive. We report an experimental demonstration of the bosonic commutation relation for optical field operators based on measurements of two distinct intensity correlation functions. From these measurements, we extract the expectation value of the field-operator commutator for both a single-photon state and coherent state. In both cases, the measured values are consistent with unity, in quantitative agreement with quantum theory.

Scheme for Proving the Bosonic Commutation Relation Using Single-Photon Interference

M. S. Kim, Hyunseok Jeong, Alessandro Zavatta +2 more

We propose an experiment to directly prove the commutation relation between bosonic annihilation and creation operators, based on the recent experimental success in single-photon subtraction and addition. We devise a single-photon interferometer to realize coherent superpositions of two sequences of photon addition and subtraction. Depending on the interference outcome, the commutation relation is directly proven or a highly nonclassical state is produced. Experimental imperfections are assessed to show that the realization of the scheme is highly feasible.

A programmable quantum processor for implementing quantum remote control

Chunmei Yao

By encoding quantum dynamics in a shared EPR entanglement and single qubit states, we propose a program- able quantum processor which allows us to implement local restricted set of operations on the remote state. Furthermore, we discuss an experimental demonstration of the programmable gate using linear optical elements.

REALIZATION OF UNITARY MAPS VIA PROBABILISTIC PROGRAMMABLE QUANTUM PROCESSORS

Mário Ziman, Vladimír Bužek

We analyze probabilistic realizations of programmable quantum processors that allow us to realize unitary operations on qubits as well as on qudits. Programmable processors are composed of two inputs — the data register and the program register. In the input state of the program register information about the operation that is supposed to be performed on the data is encoded. At the output of the probabilistic processor a measurement over the program register is performed. An intrinsic property of probabilistic processors is that they sometimes fail, but we know when this happens. We present a complete analysis of two processors: (1) The so-called [Formula: see text] processor that is based on a simple controlled-NOT gate. (2) The so-called [Formula: see text] processor that utilizes the quantum-information-distributor circuit.
