Abstract

We evaluate the relaxation rate of high-energy quasiparticles in a weakly interacting one-dimensional Bose gas. Unlike in higher dimensions, the rate is a nonmonotonic function of temperature, with a maximum at the crossover to the state of suppressed density fluctuations. At the maximum, the relaxation rate may significantly exceed its zero-temperature value. We also find the dependence of the differential inelastic scattering rate on the transferred energy. This rate yields information about temperature dependence of local pair correlations.

Relaxation of weakly interacting electrons in one dimension

Zoran Ristivojević, К. А. Матвеев

We consider the problem of relaxation in a one-dimensional system of interacting electrons. In the limit of weak interactions, we calculate the decay rate of a single-electron excitation, accounting for the nonlinear dispersion. The leading processes that determine the relaxation involve scattering of three particles. We elucidate how particular forms of Coulomb interaction, unscreened and screened, lead to different results for the decay rates and identify the dominant scattering processes responsible for relaxation of excitations of different energies. Interestingly, temperatures much smaller than the excitation energy strongly affect the rate. At higher temperatures the quasiparticle relaxes by exciting copropagating electron-hole pairs, whereas at lowest temperatures the relaxation proceeds via excitations of both copropagating and counterpropagating pairs.

Decay of Bogoliubov quasiparticles in a nonideal one-dimensional Bose gas

Zoran Ristivojević, К. А. Матвеев

We study the relaxation of excitations in a system of one-dimensional weakly interacting bosons. Due to residual weak interactions, Bogoliubov quasiparticles in this system have finite lifetimes. As a result of the conservation laws in one dimension, at zero temperature the leading mechanism of decay of a quasiparticle is disintegration into three others. We focus on phonon quasiparticles and find that their decay rate is proportional to the seventh power of momentum. In the integrable case of contact interaction between the bosons, the decay rate vanishes.

Quasiparticle Energy Relaxation in a Gas of One-Dimensional Fermions with Coulomb Interaction

Zoran Ristivojević, К. А. Матвеев

We consider a system of charged one-dimensional spin-1/2 fermions at low temperature. We study how the energy of a highly excited quasiparticle (or hole) relaxes toward the chemical potential in the regime of weak interactions. The dominant relaxation processes involve collisions with two other fermions. We find a dramatic enhancement of the relaxation rate at low energies, with the rate scaling as the inverse sixth power of the excitation energy. This behavior is caused by the long-range nature of the Coulomb interaction.

Phonon scattering from spatial relaxation of one-dimensional Bose gases

Bilal Alilou, Clément Duval, Frederick Del Pozo +1 more

We theoretically investigate the nonequilibrium relaxation of a spatial density modulation in a one-dimensional, weakly interacting Bose gas, and its connection to the equilibrium scattering rate $\smash{γ_k\propto k^{3/2}}$ of the system's phononic excitations. We show that the relaxation is generally governed by a nonequilibrium scattering rate $γ_{k,t}$ coupled to quantum fluctuations, which approaches its equilibrium value $γ_k$ only at long times. Numerical simulations of quantum kinetic equations reveal an algebraic convergence, $\smash{γ_{k,t} - γ_k \sim t^{-2/3}}$, confirmed by analytical predictions. More broadly, our results establish a theoretical framework for experimentally probing phonon dynamics through the temporal evolution of local perturbations in quantum gases.

Localization of Bogoliubov quasiparticles in interacting Bose gases with correlated disorder

Pierre Lugan, Laurent Sanchez-Palencia

We study the Anderson localization of Bogoliubov quasiparticles (elementary many-body excitations) in a weakly interacting Bose gas of chemical potential $\ensuremath{\mu}$ subjected to a disordered potential $V$. We introduce a general mapping (valid for weak inhomogeneous potentials in any dimension) of the Bogoliubov--de Gennes equations onto a single-particle Schr\"odinger-like equation with an effective potential. For disordered potentials, the Schr\"odinger-like equation accounts for the scattering and localization properties of the Bogoliubov quasiparticles. We derive analytically the localization lengths for correlated disordered potentials in the one-dimensional geometry. Our approach relies on a perturbative expansion in $V/\ensuremath{\mu}$, which we develop up to third order, and we discuss the impact of the various perturbation orders. Our predictions are shown to be in very good agreement with direct numerical calculations. We identify different localization regimes: For low energy, the effective disordered potential exhibits a strong screening by the quasicondensate density background, and localization is suppressed. For high-energy excitations, the effective disordered potential reduces to the bare disordered potential, and the localization properties of quasiparticles are the same as for free particles. The maximum of localization is found at intermediate energy when the quasicondensate healing length is of the order of the disorder correlation length. Possible extensions of our work to higher dimensions are also discussed.

Decay of Bogoliubov excitations in one-dimensional Bose gases

Zoran Ristivojević, К. А. Матвеев

We study the decay of Bogoliubov quasiparticles in one-dimensional Bose gases. Starting from the hydrodynamic Hamiltonian, we develop a microscopic theory that enables one to systematically study both the excitations and their decay. At zero temperature, the leading mechanism of decay of a quasiparticle is disintegration into three others. We find that low-energy quasiparticles (phonons) decay with the rate that scales with the seventh power of momentum, whereas the rate of decay of the high-energy quasiparticles does not depend on momentum. In addition, our approach allows us to study analytically the quasiparticle decay in the whole crossover region between the two limiting cases. When applied to integrable models, including the Lieb-Liniger model of bosons with contact repulsion, our theory confirms the absence of the decay of quasiparticle excitations. We account for two types of integrability-breaking perturbations that enable finite decay: three-body interaction between the bosons and two-body interaction of finite range.
