We make extensive simulations over a spin chain model that combines the frustrated ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ spin chain and the long-range nonfrustrated ${(\ensuremath{-}1)}^{(r\ensuremath{-}1)}{r}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}}$ decay interactions through the variational matrix product state method for both finite and infinite lengths. We study both the ground-state entanglement and phase diagram. We find that it is most entangled in the rotation invariant long-range ordered antiferromagnetic phase, where the entanglement scales approximately logarithmically. We determine the development of the Majudar-Ghosh point to a disorder line from entanglement. And we approximately determine the transition from the dimerized and incommensurate phase of the ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}$ model to a decoupled phase by studying spin correlation and the dimerization order parameter. Some implications for entanglement in systems with long-range interactions are stated.
We study spin-
1/2 chains with long-range power-law decaying unfrustrated (bipartite) Heisenberg exchange
Jr∝r−α and multi-spin interactions
Q favoring a valence-bond solid (VBS) ground state. Employing quantum Monte Carlo techniques and Lanczos diagonalization, we analyze order parameters and excited-state level crossings to characterize quantum states and phase transitions in the
(α,Q) plane. For weak
Q and sufficiently slowly decaying Heisenberg interactions (small
α), the system has a long-range-ordered antiferromagnetic (AFM) ground state, and upon increasing
α there is a continuous transition into a quasi long-range ordered (QLRO) critical state of the type in the standard Heisenberg chain. For rapidly decaying long-range interactions, there is transition between QLRO and VBS ground states of the same kind as in the frustrated
J1-
J2 Heisenberg chain. Our most important finding is a direct continuous quantum phase transition between the AFM and VBS states - a close analogy to the 2D deconfined quantum-critical point. In previous 1D analogies the ordered phases both have gapped fractional excitations, and the critical point is a conventional Luttinger Liquid. In our model the excitations fractionalize upon transitioning from the AFM state, changing from spin waves to deconfined spinons. We extract critical exponents at the AFM-VBS transition and use order-parameter distributions to study emergent symmetries. We find emergent O(
4) symmetry of the O(
3) AFM and scalar VBS order parameters. Thus, the order parameter fluctuations exhibit the covariance of a uniaxially deformed O(
4) sphere (an "elliptical" symmetry). This unusual quantum phase transition does not yet have any known field theory description, and our detailed results can serve to guide its construction. We discuss possible experimental realizations.
The quantum phases of one-dimensional spin
s=1/2 chains are discussed for models with two parameters, frustrating exchange
g=J2>0 between second neighbors and normalized nonfrustrating power-law exchange with exponent $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ and distance dependence ${r}^{\ensuremath{-}\ensuremath{\alpha}}$. The ground state (GS) at
g=0 has a long-range order (LRO) for $\ensuremath{\alpha}<2$ and long-range spin fluctuations for $\ensuremath{\alpha}>2$. The models conserve total spin
S=SA+SB, have singlet GS for any
g, $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\ge}0$ and decouple at
1/g=0 to linear Heisenberg antiferromagnets on sublattices
A and
B of odd- and even-numbered sites. Exact diagonalization of finite chains gives the sublattice spin $\ensuremath{\langle}{S}_{A}^{2}\ensuremath{\rangle}$, the magnetic gap
Em to the lowest triplet state, and the excitation ${E}_{\ensuremath{\sigma}}$ to the lowest singlet with opposite inversion symmetry to the GS. An analytical model that conserves sublattice spin has a first-order quantum transition at
gc=1/4ln2 from a GS with perfect LRO to a decoupled phase with
SA=SB=0 for $g\ensuremath{\ge}4/{\ensuremath{\pi}}^{2}$ and no correlation between spins in different sublattices. The model with $\ensuremath{\alpha}=1$ has a first-order transition to a decoupled phase that closely resembles the analytical model. The bond order wave (BOW) phase and continuous quantum phase transitions of finite models with $\ensuremath{\alpha}\ensuremath{\ge}2$ are discussed in terms of GS degeneracy where ${E}_{\ensuremath{\sigma}}(g)=0$, excited state degeneracy where ${E}_{\ensuremath{\sigma}}(g)={E}_{m}(g)$, and $\ensuremath{\langle}{S}_{A}^{2}\ensuremath{\rangle}$. The decoupled phase at large frustration has nondegenerate GS for any exponent $\ensuremath{\alpha}$ and excited states related to sublattice excitations.
Antiferromagnetic Hamiltonians with short range, non-frustrating interactions are well known to exhibit long range magnetic order in dimensions d ≥2 but exhibit only quasi-long-range order, with power-law decay of correlations, in d = 1 (for half-integer spin). On the other hand, non-frustrating long range interactions can induce long range order in d = 1. We study Hamiltonians in which the long range interactions have an adjustable amplitude λ, as well as an adjustable power law 1/| x | α , using a combination of quantum Monte Carlo and analytic methods: spin-wave, large N non-linear σ model, and renormalization group methods. We map out the phase diagram in the λ–α plane and study the nature of the critical line separating the phases with long range and quasi-long-range order. We find that this corresponds to a novel line of critical points with continuously varying critical exponents and a dynamical exponent, z <1.
The spin-1/2 chain with isotropic Heisenberg exchange J1, J2 > 0 between first and second neighbors is frustrated for either sign of J1. Its quantum phase diagram has critical points at fixed J1/J2 between gapless phases with nondegenerate ground state (GS) and quasi-long-range order (QLRO) and gapped phases with doubly degenerate GS and spin correlation functions of finite range. In finite chains, exact diagonalization (ED) estimates critical points as level crossing of excited states. GS spin correlations enter in the spin structure factor S(q) that diverges at wave vector qm in QLRO(q(m)) phases with periodicity 2π/q(m) but remains finite in gapped phases. S(q(m)) is evaluated using ED and density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations. Level crossing and the magnitude of S(q(m)) are independent and complementary probes of quantum phases, based respectively on excited and ground states. Both indicate a gapless QLRO(π/2) phase between -1.2 < J1/|J2| < 0.45. Numerical results and field theory agree well for quantum critical points at small frustration J2 but disagree in the sector of weak exchange J1 between Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chains on sublattices of odd and even-numbered sites.
We study Heisenberg spin-1/2 and spin-1 chains with alternating ferromagnetic (
J1F) and antiferromagnetic (
J1A) nearest-neighbor interactions and ferromagnetic next-nearest-neighbor interaction (
J2F). In this model frustration is induced by the non-zero
J2F and the effect of dimerization is realized by changing the strength of
J1A for a fixed value of
J1F. The model with site spin
s behaves like a Haldane spin chain with site spin 2
s in the limit of vanishing
J2F and large
J1F/J1A. We show that the exact ground state of the model can be found along a line in the parameter space. The phase diagram in the space of
J1A−J2F is determined using numerical techniques complemented by some analytical calculations. A number of quantities, including the ground state spin, energy gap, structure factor, entanglement entropy, and zero temperature magnetization, are studied to understand the complete phase diagram. An interesting and application-wise important feature of this model is that it exhibits a macroscopic magnetization jump in the presence of a magnetic field; we study this using an effective Hamiltonian.
