Abstract

We prove the reality of the perturbed eigenvalues of some PT symmetric Hamiltonians of physical interest by means of stability methods. In particular we study 2-dimensional generalized harmonic oscillators with polynomial perturbation and the onedimensional x 2 (ix) for -1 < < 0.

Perturbation theory of symmetric Hamiltonians

Emanuela Caliceti, F. Cannata, S. Graffi

In the framework of perturbation theory the reality of the perturbed eigenvalues of a class of symmetric Hamiltonians is proved using stability techniques. We apply this method to symmetric unperturbed Hamiltonians perturbed by symmetric additional interactions.

PT-symmetry and Schrödinger operators. The double well case

Nawal Mecherout, Naima Boussekkine, Thierry Ramond +1 more

We study a class of PT-symmetric semiclassical Schrödinger operators, which are perturbations of a selfadjoint one. Here, we treat the case where the unperturbed operator has a double-well potential. In the simple well case, two of the authors have proved in \cite{BoMe14} that, when the potential is analytic, the eigenvalues stay real for a perturbation of size O(1). We show here, in the double-well case, that the eigenvalues stay real only for exponentially small perturbations, then bifurcate into the complex domain when the perturbation increases and we get precise asymptotic expansions. The proof uses complex WKB-analysis, leading to a fairly explicit quantization condition.

Spectra of PT -symmetric operators and perturbation theory

Emanuela Caliceti, S. Graffi, Johannes Sjöstrand

A criterion is formulated for existence and another for the non-existence of complex eigenvalues for a class of non-self-adjoint operators in Hilbert space invariant under a particular discrete symmetry. Applications to the PT -symmetric Schrödinger operators are discussed.

Aspects of PT-symmetric quantum mechanics

Adam Millican-Slater

PT-symmetric quantum mechanics is an alternative to the usual hermitian quantum mechanics. We will start this thesis by taking an overview of the subject, seeing some of the elementary consequences of this different approach. The main part of the work will be an depth study of a specific Hamiltonian(diagram) This is a generalisation of the well understood harmonic oscillator with angular momentum. By making this generalisation we break the hermiticity of the problem. This leads to some intriguing results. We will be particularly interested in the merging of eigenvalues for M <1.We study the problem using a number of techniques. First the Hamiltonian is studied at the classical level and the behaviour of a particle moving in the corresponding potential is studied. Having seen the consequences at the classical level we return to the quantum case. The Hamiltonian is first solved perturbativly. This method is shown to be valid for PT-symmetric quantum mechanics. It is shown that asymptotic limits of the matrix do not capture the full behaviour of the energy levels. We then move on to study the problem considering techniques arising from the ODE/IM correspondence. Using this approach we are able to give an analytic description of the phenomena and explain the merging of eigenvalues.

An analytic family of {\cal P}{\cal T} -symmetric Hamiltonians with real eigenvalues

Emanuela Caliceti, F. Cannata, S. Graffi

We study nonlinear perturbative expansions for -symmetric local Schrödinger operators. The Schrödinger operator is a sum of the harmonic oscillator Hamiltonian and a local -symmetric potential depending, in general, nonlinearly on the perturbation parameter. A specific class of models having real spectrum for any value of the parameter is proposed.

Three PT-symmetric Hamiltonians with completely different spectra

Francisco Marcelo Fernández, Javier Garcia

We discuss three Hamiltonians, each with a central-field part $H_{0}$ and a PT-symmetric perturbation $igz$. When $H_{0}$ is the isotropic Harmonic oscillator the spectrum is real for all $g$ because $H$ is isospectral to $H_{0}+g^{2}/2$. When $H_{0}$ is the Hydrogen atom then infinitely many eigenvalues are complex for all $g$. If the potential in $H_{0}$ is linear in the radial variable $r$ then the spectrum of $H$ exhibits real eigenvalues for $0

We discuss three Hamiltonians, each with a central-field part H0H_{0}H0 and a PT-symmetric perturbation igzigzigz. When H0H_{0}H0 is the isotropic Harmonic oscillator the spectrum is real for all ggg because HHH is isospectral to H0+g2/2H_{0}+g^{2}/2H0+g2/2.
