Quantum phase transition in the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model: An extended coherent-state approach

Abstract

We propose a general extended coherent state approach to the qubit (or fermion) and multimode boson coupling systems. The application to the spin-boson model with the discretization of a bosonic bath with arbitrary continuous spectral density is described in detail, and very accurate solutions can be obtained. The quantum phase transition in the nontrivial sub-Ohmic case can be located by the fidelity and the order-parameter critical exponents for the bath exponents $s<1/2$ can be correctly given by the fidelity susceptibility, demonstrating the strength of the approach.

Quantum criticality in sub-Ohmic systems with three competing terms: beyond conventional spin-boson physics

Nengji Zhou, Yulong Shen, Zhe Sun

Quantum phase transitions (QPTs) in the spin-boson model with/without the rotating-wave approximation (RWA) are systematically investigated through variational calculations using a sub-Ohmic bath with high spectral density. Four cases involving different system-environment interactions are examined, where transition points and critical exponents are accurately determined across varying tunneling strengths. Contrary to prior work, a rich phase diagram is revealed in the tunneling-coupling plane even at the low spectral exponent $s<1/2$, with a novel U(1)-symmetric phase being identified. As coupling increases, a multi-stage QPT sequence arises for the tunneling $0<Δ< Δ^*=0.074(1)$, whereas a single transition occurs beyond this range. Furthermore, an odd-parity phase is found to emerge even under the positive tunneling, exhibiting distinct characteristics relative to the prototype model.

Numerical Renormalization Group for Bosonic Systems and Application to the Sub-Ohmic Spin-Boson Model

R. Bulla, Ning-Hua Tong, Matthias Vojta C

We describe the generalization of Wilson's numerical renormalization group method to quantum impurity models with a bosonic bath, providing a general nonperturbative approach to bosonic impurity models which can access exponentially small energies and temperatures. As an application, we consider the spin-boson model, describing a two-level system coupled to a bosonic bath with power-law spectral density, J(omega) proportional to omega(s). We find clear evidence for a line of continuous quantum phase transitions for sub-Ohmic bath exponents 0<s<1; the line terminates in the well-known Kosterlitz-Thouless transition at s=1. Contact is made with results from perturbative renormalization group, and various other applications are outlined.

Quantum phase transition of sub-Ohmic spin-boson models: An approach by the multiple Davydov D2 Ansatz

Junzhe Tan, Nengji Zhou, Yang Zhao

The ground state properties and quantum phase transitions of sub-Ohmic spin-boson models are investigated using the multiple Davydov D2Ansatz in conjunction with the variational principle. Three variants of the model are studied: (i) a single bath with diagonal coupling, (ii) two independent baths with diagonal and off-diagonal couplings, and (iii) a single bath with simultaneous diagonal and off-diagonal couplings. For the purely diagonal model, the multiple Davydov D2Ansatz yields critical coupling strengths that are consistent with other methodologies, validating its accuracy and efficiency. In the two-bath model, the competition between diagonal and off-diagonal couplings drives a first-order transition for both symmetric and asymmetric spectral exponents, with the von Neumann exhibiting a continuous peak only under exact symmetry. Finally, for a single bath with simultaneous diagonal and off-diagonal couplings, we demonstrate that a rotational transformation maps the system to an equivalent purely diagonal model, enabling simpler and intuitive physical interpretation and reduced computational complexity.

Equilibrium and Nonequilibrium Dynamics of the Sub-Ohmic Spin-Boson Model

Frithjof B. Anders, R. Bulla, Matthias Vojta C

Employing the nonperturbative numerical renormalization group method, we study the dynamics of the spin-boson model, which describes a two-level system coupled to a bosonic bath with a spectral density J(omega) proportional to omega(s). We show that, in contrast with the case of Ohmic damping, the delocalized phase of the sub-Ohmic model cannot be characterized by a single energy scale only, due to the presence of a nontrivial quantum phase transition. In the strongly sub-Ohmic regime, s<<1, weakly damped coherent oscillations on short time scales are possible even in the localized phase--this is of crucial relevance, e.g., for qubits subject to electromagnetic noise.

Quantum Phase Transition in the Sub-Ohmic Spin-Boson Model: Quantum Monte Carlo Study with a Continuous Imaginary Time Cluster Algorithm

André Winter, Heiko Rieger, Matthias Vojta C +1 more

A continuous time cluster algorithm for two-level systems coupled to a dissipative bosonic bath is presented and applied to the sub-Ohmic spin-boson model. When the power s of the spectral function Jomega proportional, variant omegas is smaller than 1/2, the critical exponents are found to be classical, mean-field like. Potential sources for the discrepancy with recent renormalization group predictions are traced back to the effect of a dangerously irrelevant variable.

Numerical renormalization group for quantum impurities in a bosonic bath

R. Bulla, Hyunjung Lee, Ning-Hua Tong +1 more

We present a detailed description of the recently proposed numerical renormalization group method for models of quantum impurities coupled to a bosonic bath. Specifically, the method is applied to the spin-boson model, both in the Ohmic and sub-Ohmic cases. We present various results for static as well as dynamic quantities and discuss details of the numerical implementation, e.g., the discretization of a bosonic bath with arbitrary continuous spectral density, the suitable choice of a finite basis in the bosonic Hilbert space, and questions of convergence with respect to truncation parameters. The method is shown to provide high-accuracy data over the whole range of model parameters and temperatures, which are in agreement with exact results and other numerical data from the literature.
