Abstract

We obtain the time-dependent correlation function describing the evolution of a single spin excitation state in a linear spin chain with isotropic nearest-neighbour XY coupling, where the Hamiltonian is related to the Jacobi matrix of a set of orthogonal polynomials. For the Krawtchouk polynomial case, an arbitrary element of the correlation function is expressed in a simple closed form. Its asymptotic limit corresponds to the Jacobi matrix of the Charlier polynomial, and may be understood as a unitary evolution resulting from a Heisenberg group element. Correlation functions for Hamiltonians corresponding to Jacobi matrices for the Hahn, dual Hahn and Racah polynomials are also studied. For the Hahn polynomials we obtain the general correlation function, some of its special cases and the limit related to the Meixner polynomials, where the su (1, 1) algebra describes the underlying symmetry. For the cases of dual Hahn and Racah polynomials, the general expressions of the correlation functions contain summations which are not of hypergeometric type. Simplifications, however, occur in special cases.

Quantum state transfer in spin chains withq-deformed interaction terms

E. I. Jafarov, Joris Van Der Jeugt

We study the time evolution of a single spin excitation state in certain linear spin chains, as a model for quantum communication. Some years ago it was discovered that when the spin chain data (the nearest neighbour interaction strengths and the magnetic field strengths) are related to the Jacobi matrix entries of Krawtchouk polynomials or dual Hahn polynomials, so-called perfect state transfer takes place. The extension of these ideas to other types of discrete orthogonal polynomials did not lead to new models with perfect state transfer, but did allow more insight in the general computation of the correlation function. In the present paper, we extend the study to discrete orthogonal polynomials of q-hypergeometric type. A remarkable result is a new analytic model where perfect state transfer is achieved: this is when the spin chain data are related to the Jacobi matrix of q-Krawtchouk polynomials. The other cases studied here (affine q-Krawtchouk polynomials, quantum q-Krawtchouk polynomials, dual q-Krawtchouk polynomials, q-Hahn polynomials, dual q-Hahn polynomials and q-Racah polynomials) do not give rise to models with perfect state transfer. However, the computation of the correlation function itself is quite interesting, leading to advanced q-series manipulations.

Quantum communication and state transfer in spin chains

Joris Van Der Jeugt

We investigate the time evolution of a single spin excitation state in certain linear spin chains, as a model for quantum communication. We consider first the simplest possible spin chain, where the spin chain data (the nearest neighbour interaction strengths and the magnetic field strengths) are constant throughout the chain. The time evolution of a single spin state is determined, and this time evolution is illustrated by means of an animation. Some years ago it was discovered that when the spin chain data are of a special form so-called perfect state transfer takes place. These special spin chain data can be linked to the Jacobi matrix entries of Krawtchouk polynomials or dual Hahn polynomials. We discuss here the case related to Krawtchouk polynomials, and illustrate the possibility of perfect state transfer by an animation showing the time evolution of the spin chain from an initial single spin state. Very recently, these ideas were extended to discrete orthogonal polynomials of q -hypergeometric type. Here, a remarkable result is a new analytic model where perfect state transfer is achieved: this is when the spin chain data are related to the Jacobi matrix of q -Krawtchouk polynomials. This case is discussed here, and again illustrated by means of an animation.

An Exactly Solvable Spin Chain Related to Hahn Polynomials

Nedialka I. Stoilova

We study a linear spin chain which was originally introduced by Shi et al. [Phys.Rev. A 71 (2005), 032309, 5 pages], for which the coupling strength contains a parameter α and depends on the parity of the chain site.Extending the model by a second parameter β, it is shown that the single fermion eigenstates of the Hamiltonian can be computed in explicit form. The components of these eigenvectors turn out to be Hahn polynomials with parameters (α, β) and (α + 1, β -1).The construction of the eigenvectors relies on two new difference equations for Hahn polynomials. The explicit knowledge of the eigenstates leads to a closed form expression for the correlation function of the spin chain. We also discuss some aspects of a q-extension of this model.

Entanglement in an open Heisenberg spin chain

Subhendu Paul

We analyze the time evolution of a spin chain of three qubits with nearest-neighbour Heisenberg XX interaction, coupled to two thermal reservoirs. We use the ‘reduced density matrix approach’ to calculate the populations and correlations (concurrence) among the spins. The spin-reservoir interaction is of the energy conserving type. This allows us to analyze the evolution analytically without approximations – yielding explicit, yet complicated formulas for the spin dynamics. To analyze the latter and discuss it as a function of the various physical parameters and time (intial conditions, termperatures, coupling strenghts), we resort to numerical methods. Our main finding is that the external noise (coupling to reservoirs) causes the appearence of an asymptotic, stationary (time-periodic) regime for the dynamics of concurrence. We discuss the dependence of the relaxation time and the characteristics of the regime itself, on the various parameters.

Quantum spin chains and random matrix theory

H. J. Wells

The spectral statistics and entanglement within the eigenstates of generic spin chain Hamiltonians are analysed. A class of random matrix ensembles is defined which include the most general nearest-neighbour qubit chain Hamiltonians. For these ensembles, and their generalisations, it is seen that the long chain limiting spectral density is a Gaussian and that this convergence holds on the level of individual Hamiltonians. The rate of this convergence is numerically seen to be slow. Higher eigenvalue correlation statistics are also considered, the canonical nearest-neighbour level spacing statistics being numerically observed and linked with ensemble symmetries. A heuristic argument is given for a conjectured form of the full joint probability density function for the eigenvalues of a wide class of such ensembles. This is numerically verified in a particular case. For many translationally-invariant nearest-neighbour qubit Hamiltonians it is shown that there exists a complete orthonormal set of eigenstates for which the entanglement present in a generic member, between a fixed length block of qubits and the rest of the chain, approaches its maximal value as the chain length increases. Many such Hamiltonians are seen to exhibit a simple spectrum so that their eigenstates are unique up to phase. The entanglement within the eigenstates contrasts the spectral density for such Hamiltonians, which is that seen for a non-interacting chain of qubits. For such non-interacting chains, their always exists a basis of eigenstates for which there is no entanglement present.

Correlation functions of the integrable isotropic spin-1 chain: algebraic expressions for arbitrary temperature

Andreas Klümper, Dominic Nawrath, Junji Suzuki

We derive algebraic formulae for the density matrices of finite segments of the integrable s u (2) isotropic spin-1 chain in the thermodynamic limit. We give explicit results for the 2- and 3-site cases for arbitrary temperature T and zero field. In the zero-temperature limit the correlation functions are given in elementary form in terms of Riemann's zeta function at even integer arguments.
