Abstract

Charge excitations in Mott insulators (MIs) are distinct from their band-insulator counterparts and they can provide a mechanism for energy harvesting in solar cells based on strongly correlated electronic materials. In this paper, we study the real-time dynamics of holon-doublon pairs in an MI connected to metallic leads using the time-dependent density-matrix renormalization-group method. The transfer of charge across the MI-metal interface is controlled by both the electron-electron interaction strength within the MI and the voltage difference between the leads. We find an overall enhancement of the charge transfer as compared to the case of a (noninteracting) band insulator-metal interface with a similar band gap. Moreover, the propagation of holon-doublon excitations within the MI dynamically changes the spin-spin correlations, introducing time-dependent phase shifts in the spin-structure factor.

Charge-spin-orbital dynamics of one-dimensional two-orbital Hubbard model

Hiroaki Onishi

We study the real-time evolution of a charge-excited state in a one-dimensional $e_{\rm g}$-orbital degenerate Hubbard model, by a time-dependent density-matrix renormalization group method. Considering a chain along the $z$ direction, electrons hop between adjacent $3z^2-r^2$ orbitals, while $x^2-y^2$ orbitals are localized. For the charge-excited state, a holon-doublon pair is introduced into the ground state at quarter filling. At initial time, there is no electron in a holon site, while a pair of electrons occupies $3z^2-r^2$ orbital in a doublon site. As the time evolves, the holon motion is governed by the nearest-neighbor hopping, but the electron pair can transfer between $3z^2-r^2$ orbital and $x^2-y^2$ orbital through the pair hopping in addition to the nearest-neighbor hopping. Thus holon and doublon propagate at different speed due to the pair hopping that is characteristic of multi-orbital systems.

Electron-magnon dynamics triggered by an ultrashort laser pulse: A real-time dual G W study

Nagamalleswararao Dasari, Hugo U. R. Strand, Martin Eckstein +2 more

Ultrafast irradiation of correlated electronic systems triggers complex dynamics involving quasi-particle excitations, doublons, charge carriers, and spin fluctuations. To describe these effects, we develop an efficient non-equilibrium approach, dubbed D-$GW$, that enables a self-consistent treatment of local correlations within dynamical mean-field theory (DMFT) and spatial charge and spin fluctuations, that are accounted for simultaneously within a diagrammatic framework. The method is formulated in the real-time domain and provides direct access to single- and two-particle momentum- and energy-dependent response functions without the need for analytical continuation, which is required in Matsubara frequency-based approaches. We apply the D-$GW$ method to investigate the dynamics of a photo-excited extended Hubbard model, the minimal system that simultaneously hosts strong charge and spin fluctuations. Focusing on the challenging parameter regime near the Mott transition, we demonstrate that correlated metals and narrow-gap Mott insulators undergo distinct thermalization processes involving complex energy transfer between single-particle and collective electronic excitations.

Finite-temperature charge dynamics and the melting of the Mott insulator

Xing-Jie Han, Chuang Chen, Jing Chen +6 more

The Mott insulator is the quintessential strongly correlated electronic state. We obtain complete insight into the physics of the two-dimensional Mott insulator by extending the slave-fermion (holon-doublon) description to finite temperatures. We first benchmark its predictions against state-of-the-art quantum Monte Carlo simulations, demonstrating quantitative agreement. Qualitatively, the short-ranged spin fluctuations both induce holon-doublon bound states and renormalize the charge sector to form the Hubbard bands. The Mott gap is understood as the charge gap renormalized downward by these spin fluctuations. As temperature increases, the Mott gap closes before the charge gap, causing a pseudogap regime to appear naturally during the melting of the Mott insulator.

Tracking doublon-holon dynamics in high-harmonic generation from Mott insulators

Tao-Yuan Du, Hui-Ru Li, Bo Li +1 more

High-harmonic generation (HHG) in strongly correlated Mott insulators is investigated using exact diagonalization and time-dependent density-matrix propagation of a laser-driven one-dimensional Hubbard chain. By projecting onto equilibrium Hubbard bands, we use the doublon population and its dynamics as a diagnostic to analyze intraband (spin-wave-like) and interband (doublon-holon creation) excitation channels. A filling-dependent crossover emerges: Bloch-like intraband response at dilute filling, mixed dynamics at intermediate filling, and interband-dominated HHG with plateau and cutoff near half filling. In the considered parameter range, increasing interaction strength $U$ strongly suppresses interband contributions through the enlarged Mott gap and correlation-induced localization. Intra- and interband current decomposition reveals opposing flows below the Mott gap (Δ_{\mathrm{Mott}}) and selective dephasing suppression of interband coherence, enhancing net doublon accumulation. Time-frequency analysis uncovers the filling-dependent features of quantum trajectories, manifesting in distinct below-Δ_{\mathrm{Mott}} emission. This doublon-based analysis provides a transparent link between equilibrium spin-charge separation and nonequilibrium strong-field response, and clarifies how dephasing modifies interband coherence and doublon accumulation.

Emergence of electronic modes by doping Kondo insulators in the Kondo lattice and periodic Anderson models

Masanori Kohno

Heavy-fermion or Kondo lattice materials are considered to be typical strongly correlated systems, for which mean-field approximations have shown that the Coulomb interaction increases the effective mass and narrows the band gap. In this paper, to clarify interaction effects on the electronic excitation, the spectral function of the Kondo lattice and periodic Anderson models is studied around Kondo insulators in the strong-coupling regime, by using the non-Abelian dynamical density-matrix renormalization group method and perturbation theory. Upon doping a Kondo insulator, an electronic mode emerges in the Kondo insulating gap, exhibiting the momentum-shifted magnetic dispersion relation. Although the ground-state properties are similar to those of a doped band insulator, the emergence of the electronic mode reflecting spin-charge separation of the Kondo insulator is a crucial interaction effect that allows us to regard the Kondo-insulator--metal transition as a type of Mott transition. In addition, electronic modes emerge even in the high-energy regime by doping in the periodic Anderson model. These strong-correlation effects have not been expected in conventional mean-field approximations and would bring a different perspective on heavy-fermion or Kondo lattice systems.

Extracting correlation length in Mott insulators by strong-field driving

Abdallah AlShafey, Xu-Yan Jia, Yuan-Ming Lu +6 more

The breakdown of a Mott-insulator when subjected to intense laser fields is characterized by the formation of doublon-hole pairs. This breakdown is furthermore evidenced by the production of high harmonics that can be experimentally measured. Here, we present an approach for extracting the doublon-hole correlation length of a Mott insulator. The method is based on a dynamical calculation of the Mott insulator’s rate of charge production in response to an applied strong-field laser pulse. We find that coupling the Mott insulator to a metal drastically increases the correlation length, in support of our recent hypothesis [ Phys. Rev. B 108 , 144434 ( 2023 ) 2469-9950 10.1103/PhysRevB.108.144434 ] that coupling to a metal enhances the charge fluctuations in the insulator. We confirm our conclusions using density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) calculations. The proposed method can be applied to experimentally measured observables, such as differential reflectivity or the high harmonic generation (HHG) spectrum to extract doublon-hole correlation length.
