Entangled states and entropy remnants of a photon–electron system

Abstract

In the present paper, an example of entanglement between two different kinds of interacting particles, photons and electrons is analysed. The initial-value problem of the Schrödinger equation is solved non-perturbatively for the system of a free electron interacting with a quantized mode of electromagnetic radiation. Wave packets of the dressed states so obtained are constructed in order to describe the spatio-temporal separation of the subsystems before and after interaction. The joint probability amplitudes are calculated for the detection of the electron at some space–time location and the detection of a definite number of photons. The analytical study of the time evolution of entanglement between the initially separated electron wave packet and the radiation mode leads to the conclusion that in general there are non-vanishing entropy remnants in the subsystems after the interaction. On the basis of the simple model to be presented here, the calculated values of the entropy remnants crucially depend on the character of the assumed switching-on and -off of the interaction.

Entangled photon–electron states and the number-phase minimum uncertainty states of the photon field

S Varró

The exact analytic solutions of the energy eigenvalue equation of the system consisting of a free electron and one mode of the quantized radiation field are used for studying the physical meaning of a class of number-phase minimum uncertainty states. The states of the mode which minimize the uncertainty product of the photon number and the Suskind and Glogower (1964 Physics 1 49–61) cosine operator have been obtained by Jackiw (1968 J. Math. Phys. 9 339–46). However, these states have so far remained mere mathematical constructions without any physical significance. It is proved that the most fundamental interaction in quantum electrodynamics—namely the interaction of a free electron with a mode of the quantized radiation field—leads quite naturally to the generation of the mentioned minimum uncertainty states. It is shown that from the entangled photon–electron states developing from a highly excited number state, due to the interaction with a Gaussian electronic wave packet, the minimum-uncertainty states of Jackiw's type can be constructed. In the electron's coordinate representation, the physical meaning of the expansion coefficients of these states is the joint probability amplitudes of simultaneous detection of an electron and of a definite number of photons. The photon occupation probabilities in these states preserve their functional form as time elapses, but they depend on the location in space-time of the detected electron. An analysis of the entanglement entropies derived from the photon number distribution and from the electron's density operator is given.

Quantum entanglement due to nonlinear interaction between a moving three-level atom and a two-mode field with two-photon transitions

Mahnaz Ghorbani, Hassan Safari, Mohammad Javad Faghihi

In this paper, an analytical model for the interaction between a moving -type three-level atom and a two-mode radiation field is presented with two-photon transition and in the intensity-dependent coupling regime. After specifying the initial conditions for the atom and the field, the explicit form of the state vector of the entire system is obtained via the time evolution operator. In order to study the entanglement between subsystems, atom and field, temporal behavior of the von Neumann entropy, as a measure of entanglement, is examined.

Wave packet dynamics of entangled two-mode states

C Sudheesh, S Lakshmibala, V Balakrishnan

We consider a model Hamiltonian describing the interaction of a single-mode radiation field with the atoms of a nonlinear medium and study the dynamics of entanglement for specific non-entangled initial states of interest: namely, those in which the field mode is initially in a Fock state, a coherent state or a photon-added coherent state. The counterparts of near-revivals and fractional revivals are shown to be clearly identifiable in the entropy of entanglement. The 'overlap fidelity' of the system is another such indicator, and its behaviour corroborates that of the entropy of entanglement in the vicinity of near-revivals. The expectation values and higher moments of suitable quadrature variables are also examined, with reference to possible squeezing and higher order squeezing. The power spectra of the time series generated by the mean photon number are presented for initial states corresponding, respectively, to a coherent state and a photon-added coherent state. When the nonlinearity in the Hamiltonian is weak, these show signatures of quasiperiodicity.

Electronic Wave Packet in a Quantized Electromagnetic Field

Taiwang Cheng, Yan-Li Xue, Li Xiao-Feng +2 more

We study a non-stationary electronic wave packet in a quantized electromagnetic field. Generally, the electron and field become entangled as the electronic wave packet evolves. Here we find that, when the initial photon state is a coherent one, the wavefunction of the system can be factorized if we neglect the transferred photon number. In this case, the quantized-field calculation is equivalent to the semi-classical calculation.

Generation of Entanglement Between Two Noninteracting Qubits via Interaction with Nonclassical Radiation Field

Jian Zou, Cai Jin-Fang, Bin Shao +1 more

We study the interaction between a single-mode quantized field and a quantum system composed of two qubits. We suppose that two qubits initially be prepared in the mixed and separable state, and study how entanglement between two qubits arises in the course of evolution according to the Jaynes–Cummings type interaction with nonclassical radiation field. We also investigate the relation between entanglement and purity of qubit subsystem. We show that different photon statistics have different effects on the dynamical behavior of the qubit subsystem. When the qubits are initially prepared in the maximally mixed and separable state, for coherent state field we cannot find entanglement between two qubits; for squeezed state field entanglement between two qubits exists in several short period of time; for even and odd coherent state fields of large photon number, the dynamical behavior of the entanglement between two qubits shows collapse and revival phenomenon. For odd coherent state field of small photon number, the entanglement with both qubits initially prepared in maximally mixed state can be stronger than that with both qubits initially prepared in pure states. For fields of small photon number, the entanglement strongly depends on the states they are initially prepared in. For coherent state field, and odd and even coherent state fields of large photon number, the entanglement only depends on the purity of the initial state of qubit subsystem. We also show that during the evolution the unentangled state may be purer than the entangled state, and the maximum degree of entanglement may not occur at the time when the qubit subsystem is in the purist state.
