Renormalization-group study of the four-body problem

Abstract

We perform a renormalization-group analysis of the nonrelativistic four-boson problem by means of a simple model with pointlike three- and four-body interactions. We investigate in particular the region where the scattering length is infinite and all energies are close to the atom threshold. We find that the four-body problem behaves truly universally, independent of any four-body parameter. Our findings confirm the recent conjectures of others that the four-body problem is universal, now also from a renormalization-group perspective. We calculate the corresponding relations between the four- and three-body bound states, as well as the full bound-state spectrum and comment on the influence of effective range corrections.

Functional renormalization group approach to the four-body problem

Richard Schmidt, Sergej Moroz

We present a renormalization group analysis of the non-relativistic four-boson problem by means of a simple model with pointlike three- and four-body interactions. We investigate in particular the unitarity point where the scattering length is infinite and all energies are at the atom threshold. We find that the four-body problem behaves truly universally, independent of any four-body parameter confirming the findings of Platter et al. and von Stecher et al. [1–3].

Universal behavior of four-boson systems from a functional-renormalization-group analysis

Benjamín Raziel Jaramillo Avila, Michael C. Birse

We apply a functional renormalization group to systems of four bosonic atoms close to the unitary limit. We work with a local effective action that includes a dynamical trimer field, and we use this field to eliminate structures that do not correspond to the Faddeev-Yakubovsky equations. In the physical limit, we find three four-body bound states below the shallowest three-body state. The values of the scattering lengths at which two of these states become bound are in good agreement with exact solutions of the four-body equations and experimental observations. The third state is extremely shallow. During the evolution we find an infinite number of four-body states based on each three-body state which follow a double-exponential pattern in the running scale. None of the four-body states shows any evidence of dependence on a four-body parameter.

Four-boson bound states from a functional renormalization group

Benjamín Raziel Jaramillo Avila, Michael C. Birse

We use the functional renormalization group to study the spectrum of three- and four-body states in bosonic systems around the unitary limit. Our effective action includes all energy-independent contact interactions in the four-atom sector, and we introduce a running trimer field to eliminate couplings that involve the atom-atom-dimer channel. The results show behavior qualitatively similar to those from exact approaches. The truncated action we use leads to overbinding of the two four-body states seen in those treatments. It also generates a third state, although only for a very narrow range of two-body scattering lengths.

Universality in the three-body problem for 4He atoms

Eric Braaten, H.‐W. Hammer

The two-body scattering length a for ${}^{4}\mathrm{He}$ atoms is much larger than their effective range ${r}_{s}.$ As a consequence, low-energy few-body observables have universal characteristics that are independent of the interaction potential. Universality implies that, up to corrections suppressed by ${r}_{s}/a,$ all low-energy three-body observables are determined by a and a three-body parameter ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{*}.$ We give simple expressions in terms of a and ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{*}$ for the trimer binding-energy equation, the atom-dimer scattering phase shifts, and the rate for three-body recombination at threshold. We determine ${\ensuremath{\Lambda}}_{*}$ for several ${}^{4}\mathrm{He}$ potentials from the calculated binding energy of the excited state of the trimer and use it to obtain the universality predictions for the other low-energy observables. We also use the calculated values for one potential to estimate the effective range corrections for the other potentials.

Exact renormalization relation and binding energies for three identical bosons

Langxuan Chen, Pengfei Zhang

In the low-energy limit, non-relativistic particles with short-range interactions exhibit universal behavior that is largely independent of microscopic details. This universality is typically described by effective field theory, in which the two-body interaction is renormalized to a single parameter-the scattering length. For systems of identical bosons, the three-body problem reveals the Efimov effect, a novel phenomenon proposed that necessitates the introduction of an additional three-body parameter. However, the exact relation between this three-body parameter, the coupling constants in the effective field theory, and the binding energies of Efimov states remains unresolved. In this Letter, we address this question through a comprehensive analysis of the Skorniakov-Ter-Martirosian equation with a finite cutoff. We establish an exact renormalization relation for the three-body parameter and determine its connection to the energies of Efimov bound states. These results are validated through high-precision numerical simulations. We expect our findings to be of fundamental interest across various fields, including atomic, nuclear, condensed matter, and particle physics, and to have broad applications in both few-body and many-body physics.

Beyond universality in three-body recombination: An effective field theory treatment

C. Ji, Daniel R. Phillips, Lucas Platter

We discuss the impact of a finite effective range on three-body systems interacting through a large two-body scattering length. By employing a perturbative analysis in an effective field theory well suited to this scale hierarchy we find that an additional three-body parameter is required for consistent renormalization once range corrections are considered. This allows us to extend previously discussed universal relations between different observables in the recombination of cold atoms to account for the presence of a finite effective range. We show that such range corrections allow us to simultaneously describe the positive and negative scattering-length loss features observed in recombination with 7 Li atoms by the Bar-Ilan group. They do not, however, significantly reduce the disagreement between the universal relations and the data of the Rice group on 7 Li recombination at positive and negative scattering lengths.
