Density matrix reconstruction from displaced photon number distributions

Abstract

We consider state reconstruction from the measurement statistics of phase space observables generated by photon number states. The results are obtained by inverting certain infinite matrices. In particular, we obtain reconstruction formulas, each of which involves only a single phase space observable.

State reconstruction via infinite matrix inversion

Jussi Schultz

We consider the method of infinite matrix inversion in deriving state reconstruction formulae for phase-space distributions. As an example, we demonstrate the method in the case of the Cahill?Glauber s-parametrized quasiprobability distributions. We obtain two formulae by different means, both of which have different conditions for validity.

On/off Detection Method for Reconstructing the Statistics of Quantum Optical States: An Overview

G. Brida, Marco Genovese, Marco Gramegna +3 more

We give a brief overview of the demonstration of a photon statistics reconstruction method based on Maximum Likelihood estimation and on/off detection. This method has been successfully applied to a large number of cases and, recently, extended to a scheme for a full reconstruction of the density matrix. Experimental results concerning the heralded single-photon state and the seeded parametric down-conversion are presented in some details.

Reconstruction of Photon Number Distribution without Relying on Photon Number-Resolving Detector

Akio Yoshizawa, Hidemi Tsuchida

The photon number distribution is reconstructed from the measured statistics of vacuum states in single-photon detection. Numerical results are presented for the coherent, thermal, number and squeezed-vacuum states. The quantum efficiency of single-photon detection should be high for the successful evaluation of the number state. The quantum efficiency provides the marginal influence for the evaluation of the coherent, thermal and squeezed-vacuum states. However, the accuracy of the reconstructed photon number distribution of the squeezed-vacuum state is low even though the quantum efficiency is unity. For a more accurate reconstruction, we must obtain a priori information on the photon number distribution of the squeezed-vacuum state.

Quantum state inference from photocount statistics: one-probe reconstruction and reconstruction checking the presence or absence of photons

Dmitri S. Mogilevtsev, Z. Hradil, Jan Peřina

We demonstrate the possibility of reconstructing the density matrix of a single-mode signal state of a radiation field by measuring the photocount statistics in a simple two-detector measurement scheme. We show that the reconstruction can be done by measuring either the complete photocount distribution for identical probe states or the probability of zero counts on both detectors for different probe states.

Measuring the elements of the optical density matrix

K. L. Pregnell, David Thomas Pegg

Most methods for experimentally reconstructing the quantum state of light involve determining a quasiprobability distribution such as the Wigner function. In this paper we present a scheme for measuring individual density matrix elements in the photon number state representation. Remarkably, the scheme is simple, involving two beam splitters and a reference field in a coherent state.
