Abstract

We present the geometry of pure states of an ensemble of N spin-J systems using a generalisation of the Majorana representation. The approach is based on Schur-Weyl duality that allows for simple interpretation of the state transformation under the action of general linear and permutation groups. We show an exemplary application in the theory of decoherence-free subspaces and noiseless subsystems.

Combinatorial approach to the representation of the Schur-Weyl duality in one-dimensional spin systems

Dorota Jakubczyk, Paweł Jakubczyk

We propose combinatorial approach to the representation of Schur-Weyl duality in physical systems on the example of one-dimensional spin chains. Exploiting the Robinson-Schensted-Knuth algorithm, we perform decomposition of the dual group representations into irreducible representations in a fully combinatorial way. As representation space, we choose the Hilbert space of the spin chains, but this approach can be easily generalized to an arbitrary physical system where the Schur-Weyl duality works.

A new approach to the construction of Schur-Weyl states

Michał Kaczor, Paweł Jakubczyk

The Schur-Weyl states belong to a special class of states with a symmetry described by two Young and Weyl tableaux. Representation of physical systems in Hilbert space spanned on these states enables to extract quantum information hidden in nonlocal degrees of freedom. Such property can be very useful in a broad range of problems in Quantum Computations, especially in quantum algorithms constructions, therefore it is very important to know exact form of these states. Moreover, they allow to reduce significantly the size of eigenproblem, or in general, diminishing the representation matrix of any physical quantities, represented in the symmetric or unitary group algebra. Here we present a new method of Schur-Weyl states construction in a spin chain system representation. Our approach is based on the fundamental shift operators out of which one can build Clebsch-Gordan coefficients for the unitary group U(n) and then derive appropriate Schur-Weyl state probability amplitudes.

Duality of averaging of quantum states over arbitrary symmetry groups revealing Schur–Weyl duality

Marcin Markiewicz, Janusz Przewocki

Abstract It is a well-established fact in quantum information theory, that uniform averaging over the collective action of a unitary group on a multipartite quantum state projects the state to a form equivalent to a permutation operator of the subsystems. Hence states equivalent to permutation operators are untouched by collective unitary noise. A trivial observation shows that uniform averaging over permutation operators projects the state into a form with block-diagonal structure equivalent to the one of the collective action of the unitary group. We introduce a name for this property: duality of averaging . The mathematical reason behind this duality is the fact that the collective action of the unitary group on the tensor product state space of a multipartite quantum system and the action of the permutation operations are mutual commutants when treated as matrix algebras. Such pairs of matrix algebras are known as dual reductive pairs . In this work we show, that in the case of finite dimensional quantum systems such duality of averaging holds for any pairs of symmetry groups being dual reductive pairs, regardless of whether they are compact or not, as long as the averaging operation is defined via iterated integral over the Cartan decomposition of the group action. Although our result is very general, we focus much attention on the concrete example of a dual reductive pair consisting of collective action of special linear matrices and permutation operations, which physically corresponds to averaging multipartite quantum states over non-unitary SLOCC-type (Stochastic Local Operations and Classical Communication) operations. In this context we show, that noiseless subsystems known from collective unitary averaging persist in the case of SLOCC averaging in a conditional way: upon postselection to specific invariant subspaces.

Heisenberg models and Schur–Weyl duality

Jakob E. Björnberg, Hjalmar Rosengren, Kieran Ryan

We present a detailed analysis of certain quantum spin systems with inhomogeneous (non-random) mean-field interactions. Examples include, but are not limited to, the interchange- and spin singlet projection interactions on complete bipartite graphs. Using two instances of the representation theoretic framework of Schur–Weyl duality, we can explicitly compute the free energy and other thermodynamic limits in the models we consider. This allows us to describe the phase transition, the ground-state phase diagram, and the expected structure of extremal states.

Unitary Schur Sampling of Qudits via Random SWAP Tests: Hunt for Antisymmetry

Shrigyan Brahmachari, David Jakab, Henry D. Pfister +1 more

Schur sampling is a fundamental primitive for extracting permutation-invariant information from many-body quantum systems and has broad applications in quantum information science. Circuit-based implementations typically rely on coherent representation-theoretic operations such as Clebsch-Gordan transforms, generalized phase estimation, or quantum Fourier transforms over the symmetric group. We show that unitary Schur sampling of arbitrary permutation-invariant mixed states on $n$ $d$-dimensional qudits can instead be implemented using only pairwise SWAP tests, namely, two-qudit projective measurements onto the symmetric and antisymmetric subspaces. Our protocol achieves error $ε$ in diamond distance using $O(n\min\{n,d\}^{3}\log^2(n/ε))$ random SWAP tests. The central idea is to repeatedly identify and extract the largest antisymmetric subsystem. This turns unitary Schur sampling into a search for antisymmetry and gives the algorithm a natural interpretation as a stochastic traversal of a Young diagram. The protocol preserves the $\mathrm{SU}(d)$-irrep state while preparing a canonical pure state in the multiplicity subsystem. As an application, we consider quantum purity amplification (QPA), in which multiple noisy copies of a pure quantum state are combined to produce a state of higher purity. We show that the optimal purified state can be obtained by retaining a single designated output qudit and discarding the rest.

Barycentric measure of quantum entanglement

Wojciech Ganczarek, Marek Kuś, Karol Życzkowski

Majorana representation of quantum states by a constellation of $n$ ``stars'' (points on the sphere) can be used to describe any pure state of a simple system of dimension $n+1$ or a permutation symmetric pure state of a composite system consisting of $n$ qubits. We analyze the variance of the distribution of the stars, which can serve as a measure of the degree of noncoherence for simple systems or an entanglement measure for composed systems. Dynamics of the Majorana points induced by a unitary dynamics of a pure state is investigated.
