Light and stable triplet bipolarons on square and triangular lattices

Abstract

We compute the properties of singlet and triplet bipolarons on two-dimensional lattices using the continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo algorithm. Properties of the bipolaron including the total energy, inverse mass, bipolaron radius, and number of phonons associated with the bipolaron demonstrate the qualitative difference between models of electron-phonon interaction with long-range interaction (screened Fr\"ohlich) and those with purely local (Holstein) interaction. A major result of our survey of the parameter space is the existence of extra-light hybrid singlet bipolarons consisting of an on-site and an off-site component on both square and triangular lattices. We also compute triplet properties of the bipolarons and the pair dispersion. For pair momenta on the edge of the Brillouin zone of the triangular lattice, we find that triplet states are more stable than singlets.

Bipolarons from long-range interactions: Singlet and triplet pairs in the screened Hubbard-Fröhlich model on the chain

J. P. Hague, P. E. Kornilovitch

We present details of a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo algorithm for the screened Hubbard-Fr\"ohlich bipolaron. We simulate the bipolaron in one dimension with arbitrary interaction range in the presence of Coulomb repulsion, computing the effective mass, binding energy, total number of phonons associated with the bipolaron, mass isotope exponent, and bipolaron radius in a comprehensive survey of the parameter space. We discuss the role of the range of the electron-phonon interaction, demonstrating the evolution from Holstein to Fr\"ohlich bipolarons and we compare the properties of bipolarons with singlet and triplet pairing. Finally, we present simulations of the bipolaron dispersion. The bandwidth of the Fr\"ohlich bipolaron is found to be broad and the decrease in bandwidth as the two polarons bind into a bipolaron is found to be far less rapid than in the case of the Holstein interaction. The properties of bipolarons formed from long-range electron-phonon interactions, such as light strongly bound bipolarons and intersite pairing when Coulomb repulsion is large, are found to be robust against screening, with qualitative differences between Holstein and screened Fr\"ohlich bipolarons found even for interactions screened within a single lattice site.

Superlight Small Bipolarons in the Presence of a Strong Coulomb Repulsion

J. P. Hague, P. E. Kornilovitch, John H. Samson +1 more

We study a lattice bipolaron on a staggered triangular ladder and triangular and hexagonal lattices with both long-range electron-phonon interaction and strong Coulomb repulsion using a novel continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo algorithm to solve the two-particle Coulomb-Fröhlich model. The algorithm is preceded by an exact integration over phonon degrees of freedom, and as such is extremely efficient. The bipolaron effective mass and radius are computed. Bipolarons on lattices constructed from triangular plaquettes have a novel crablike motion, and are small but very light over a wide range of parameters. We discuss the conditions under which such particles may form a Bose-Einstein condensate with high transition temperature, proposing a route to room temperature superconductivity.

Comprehensive study of bond bipolaron superconductivity on the triangular lattice

Chao Zhang

We employ the diagrammatic Monte Carlo method with a lattice path-integral formulation for both electron and phonon degrees of freedom to investigate the formation and properties of bond polarons and bipolarons on a two-dimensional triangular lattice. In the deep adiabatic regime ($\ensuremath{\omega}/t<1.0$), single polarons remain light with a small effective mass, while bipolarons remain compact and lightweight, resulting in a high superfluid transition temperature ${T}_{c}$. We systematically study the dependence of ${T}_{c}$ on electron-phonon coupling strength and on-site interaction in the bond bipolaron model. Our results show that a moderate on-site repulsion enhances ${T}_{c}$ by stabilizing compact yet lightweight bipolarons, leading to high-${T}_{c}$ superconductivity in the dilute limit. Notably, the triangular lattice sustains relatively high ${T}_{c}$ across a wide range of phonon frequencies, outperforming square lattice geometry. This enhancement arises from the higher coordination number and the bond-centered nature of the electron-phonon coupling. These findings suggest that triangular lattice geometry offers a promising platform for realizing high-${T}_{c}$ bipolaronic superconductivity.

Two-dimensional Hubbard-Holstein bipolaron

Alexandru Macridin, G. A. Sawatzky, Mark Jarrell

We present a diagrammatic Monte Carlo study of the properties of the Hubbard-Holstein bipolaron on a two-dimensional square lattice. With a small Coulomb repulsion $U$ and with increasing electron-phonon interaction, and when reaching a value about two times smaller than the one corresponding to the transition of light polaron to heavy polaron, the system suffers a sharp transition from a state formed by two weakly bound light polarons to a heavy, strongly bound on-site bipolaron. Aside from this rather conventional bipolaron a new bipolaron state is found for large $U$ at intermediate and large electron-phonon coupling, corresponding to two polarons bound on nearest-neighbor sites. We discuss both the properties of the different bipolaron states and the transition from one state to another. We present a phase diagram in parameter space defined by the electron-phonon coupling and $U$. Our numerical method does not use any artificial approximation and can be easily modified to other bipolaron models with longer range electron-phonon and∕or electron-electron interaction.

Stability of Holstein and Fröhlich bipolarons

Monodeep Chakraborty, Byung Il Min, Atisdipankar Chakrabarti +1 more

We have investigated bipolaron formation in the Holstein-Hubbard and the Fr\"ohlich-Hubbard model on a discrete one-dimensional lattice. Phonon enriched basis has been generated by exploiting the idea of the Lang-Firsov transformation, which results in better convergence in the strong coupling regime. The incorporation of the finite-range electron-phonon (e-ph) interaction reduces the bipolaron effective mass. We systematically increase the spatial extent of the e-ph interaction to study the effect of the long-range tail of the Fr\"ohlich model. The electron-electron (e-e) interaction also plays a crucial role in lowering the effective mass for both the Holstein and the Fr\"ohlich bipolarons. In the presence of the extended e-e interaction, the intersite S1 Holstein bipolaron becomes unstable, while the effective mass of the Fr\"ohlich bipolaron becomes significantly reduced for both the spin singlet and triplet cases.

Bipolarons in the extended Holstein Hubbard model

J. Bonča, S. A. Trugman

We numerically and analytically calculate the properties of the bipolaron in an extended Hubbard-Holstein model, which has a longer-range electron-phonon coupling like the Fr\"ohlich model. In the strong-coupling regime, the effective mass of the bipolaron in the extended model is much smaller than the Holstein bipolaron mass. In contrast to the Holstein bipolaron, the bipolaron in the extended model has a lower binding energy and remains bound with substantial binding energy even in the large-$U$ limit. In comparison with the Holstein model where only a singlet bipolaron is bound, in the extended Holstein model a triplet bipolaron can also form a bound state. We discuss the possibility of phase separation in the case of finite electron doping.
