Reentrance of Bose-Einstein condensation in spinor atomic gases in a magnetic field

Abstract

We calculate the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) temperature of spin-1 atomic bosons in external magnetic field, taking into account the influence of the quadratic Zeeman effect. In case that the quadratic Zeeman coefficient is positive, the BEC temperature exhibits a nontrivial dependence on the magnetic field and a magnetic-field-induced reentrant phenomenon of BEC is observed. This phenomenon could be well understood by the competition between the linear and quadratic Zeeman effects. Reentrance of BEC in a trapped spinor Bose gas is also discussed.

On the role of hyperfine-interactions-mediated Zeeman effect in the condensation temperature shift of trapped atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

Fabio Briscese, S. Sergeenkov, M. Grether +1 more

We discuss the effect of interatomic interactions on the condensation temperature $T_c$ of a laboratory atomic Bose-Einstein condensate under the influence of an external trapping magnetic field. We predict that accounting for hyperfine interactions mediated Zeeman term in the mean-field approximation produces, in the case of the $403 \, G$ Feshbach resonance in the $|F,m_F> = |1,1>$ hyperfine state of a $^{39}K$ condensate, with $F$ the total spin of the atom, an experimentally observed (and not yet explained) shift in the condensation temperature $ΔT_{c}/T_{c}^{0}=b^{*}_0+b^{*}_1 (a/λ_{T}) + b^{*}_2 (a/λ_{T})^2$ with $b^{*}_0 \simeq 0.0002$, $b^{*}_1 \simeq -3.4$ and $b^{*}_2 \simeq 47$, where $a$ is the s-wave scattering length, and $λ_T$ is the thermal wavelength at $T_{c}^{0}$. Generic expressions for the coefficients $b^*_0$, $b^*_1$ and $b^*_2$ are also obtained, which can be used to predict the temperature shift for other Feshbach resonances of $^{39}K$ or other atomic condensates.

Effect of Quadratic Zeeman Energy on the Vortex of Spinor Bose–Einstein Condensates

Tomoya Isoshima, Sungkit Yip

The spinor Bose-Einstein condensate of atomic gases has been experimentally realized by a number of groups. Further, theoretical proposals of the possible vortex states have been sugessted. This paper studies the effects of the quadratic Zeeman energy on the vortex states. This energy was ignored in previous theoretical studies, although it exists in experimental systems. We present phase diagrams of various vortex states taking into account the quadratic Zeeman energy. The vortex states are calculated by the Gross-Pitaevskii equations. Several new kinds of vortex states are found. It is also found that the quadratic Zeeman energy affects the direction of total magnetization and causes a significant change in the phase diagrams.

Phenomenological theory of spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Qiang Gu

It was reported that Bose-Einstein condensation induces a spontaneous magnetization in spinor bosons. This phenomenon is called Bose-Einstein ferromagnetism (BEF). We propose a phenomenological model consistent with the prediction of BEF and show that BEF might be attributed to the intrinsic magnetic moment of particles. Taking BEF into account, the phase diagram of an optically trapped spinor condensate is reexamined.

Origin of a nonlinear contribution to the shift of the critical temperature in atomic Bose-Einstein condensates

S. Sergeenkov, Fabio Briscese, M. Grether +1 more

We discuss a possible origin of the experimentally observed nonlinear contribution to the shift ΔT c = T c − T 0 of the critical temperature T c in an atomic Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) with respect to the critical temperature T 0 of an ideal gas. We found that accounting for a nonlinear (quadratic) Zeeman effect (with applied magnetic field closely matching a Feshbach resonance field B 0) in the mean-field approximation results in a rather significant renormalization of the field-free nonlinear contribution b 2, namely, T c /T 0 ≃ b 2* (a/λ T )2 (where a is the s-wave scattering length, λ T is the thermal wavelength at T 0 ) with b 2* = γ2 b 2 and γ = γ(B 0). In particular, we predict b 2* ≃ 42.3 for the B 0 ≃ 403 G resonance observed in the 39K BEC.

Bose – Einstein condensation of magnetized charged scalar bosons revisited

Gretel Quintero Angulo, Aurora Pérez Martínez, Hugo Pérez Rojas

Abstract We study the effects of a uniform and constant magnetic field on the Bose–Einstein condensation (BEC) of relativistic charged scalar bosons. The condensation of magnetized charged bosons is usually discussed in the weak or strong field regimes separately, and in each case, the properties predicted for the condensate are different. Here, we develop a low‐temperature analysis suitable for any field that allows us to observe how the gas behaves for intermediate values of the magnetic field. We find that BEC may occur at finite magnetic fields, despite the gas becoming effectively one‐dimensional due to Landau quantization of the momentum perpendicular to the magnetic axis.
