Quantum Reversibility and Echoes in Interacting Systems

Cyril Petitjean, Philippe Jacquod

In echo experiments, imperfect time-reversal operations are performed on a subset of the total number of degrees of freedom. To capture the physics of these experiments, we introduce a partial fidelity M(B)(t), the Boltzmann echo, where only part of the system's degrees of freedom can be time reversed. We present a semiclassical calculation of M(B)(t). We show that, as the time-reversal operation is performed more and more accurately, the decay rate of M(B)(t) saturates at a value given by the decoherence rate of the controlled degrees of freedom due to their coupling to uncontrolled ones. We connect these results with NMR spin echo experiments.

Dynamical breakdown of time reversal invariance and causality

János Polonyi

Irreversibility and acausality of a subsystem are established in exactly soluble harmonic models with reversible and causal dynamics. It is shown that initial conditions, imposed on some dynamical degrees of freedom may break time reversal invariance for other degrees of freedom. This happens if observations carried out in any large but finite amount of time can not resolve the spectrum of the eliminated degrees of freedom, namely, when the spectrum has a condensation point at the ground state. Acausality follows due to the dominance of the dynamics by almost time-independent modes.

High-Fidelity Cluster State Generation for Ultracold Atoms in an Optical Lattice

Kensuke Inaba, Yuuki Tokunaga, Kiyoshi Tamaki +2 more

We propose a method for generating high-fidelity multipartite spin entanglement of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice in a short operation time with a scalable manner, which is suitable for measurement-based quantum computation. To perform the desired operations based on the perturbative spin-spin interactions, we propose to actively utilize the extra degrees of freedom (DOFs) usually neglected in the perturbative treatment but included in the Hubbard Hamiltonian of atoms, such as, (pseudo-)charge and orbital DOFs. Our method simultaneously achieves high fidelity, short operation time, and scalability by overcoming the following fundamental problem: enhancing the interaction strength for shortening the operation time breaks the perturbative condition of the interaction and inevitably induces unwanted correlations among the spin and extra DOFs.
