Abstract

We investigate the spontaneous emission from an inverted $\mathbsf{Y}$-type atomic system coupled by three coherent fields. We use the Schr\"odinger equation to calculate the probability amplitudes of the wave function of the system and derive an analytical expression of the spontaneous emission spectrum to trace the origin of the spectral features. Quantum interference effects, such as the spectral line narrowing, spectrum splitting, and dark resonance, are observed. The number of spectral components, the spectral linewidth, and relative heights can be very different depending on the physical parameters. A variety of spontaneous emission spectral features can be controlled by the amplitude of the coupling fields and the preparation of the initial quantum state of the atom. We propose an ultracold atomic $^{87}\text{R}\text{b}$ system for experimental observation.

Control of Spontaneous Emission via a Single Elliptically Polarized Light in a Five-Level Atomic System

We investigate the features of the spontaneous emission spectra in a cold five-level atomic system coupled by a single elliptically polarized control field. We use wave function approach to derive the explicit and analytical expressions of atomic spontaneous emission spectra. It is shown that some interesting phenomena such as spectral-line enhancement, spectral-line suppression, spectral-line narrowing, spectral-line splitting and dark fluorescence can be observed in the spectra by appropriately modulating the phase difference between the right-hand circularly (LHC) and left-hand circularly (RHC) polarized components of the elliptically polarized control field and the intensity of external magnetic field. The number of emission peaks, the positions of fluorescence-quenching points can be also controlled. Furthermore, we propose an ultracold 87 Rb atomic system for experimental observation. These investigations may find applications in high-precision spectroscopy.

Spontaneous emission spectra from a five-level atom with a loop structure

B Zhang, Xiaohan Sun, Xiangqian Jiang

The spontaneous emission property of a five-level atom with a loop structure driven by three optical fields and a microwave field is intensively studied. Several quantum interference effects can be observed in the spontaneous emission spectra, such as spectral-line narrowing, spectral-line enhancement, spectral-line suppression, partial cancellation and fluorescence quenching. The number of emission peaks, the positions of dark lines can be controlled by varying the intensities of driving fields or the phase of the microwave field coupling the two lower levels in the atomic system. Furthermore, since no rigorous conditions are required, the expected phenomena may easily be achieved experimentally in atomic systems.

Control of the spontaneous emission spectrum in a drivenN-type atom by dynamically induced quantum interference

Bibhas Kumar Dutta, P.K. Mahapatra

The modification of the spontaneous emission spectrum has been studied in this paper in a four-level doubly driven N-type atomic system. In the presence of two coherent fields, emphasis has been given to studying the spectral distribution of spontaneous emission in the relaxation process of the initially prepared excited level. The phenomenon of quantum interference dynamically induced in the system by these fields can significantly change the spontaneous emission spectrum. We have shown the emergence of a two-peak spectrum where two widely separated symmetric peaks are associated with a sharp dark line at their mid-position. At different dynamic conditions, we have also shown that two symmetric peaks may appear in the spectrum with an extended dark zone between them. Depending on the values of the Rabi frequencies and the detunings of the external fields, one can achieve a large enhancement of very narrow spectral components within the spontaneous emission line shape under different conditions. The phenomenon of suppression of spectral line and the selective cancellation of spontaneous emission have also been discussed. The results shown in various cases are analysed by considering all possible dressed states corresponding to the bare state model. The influence of collision-induced effects on the spontaneous emission spectrum is investigated as a conditional case.

Control of spontaneous emission in a four-level system

Yonghong Ma, Jia Liu, Jinyan Niu

Spontaneous emission in a four-level atomic system coupled by two coherent driven fields is investigated. Using a wave function technique, an explicit expression of the spontaneous emission spectrum is derived. The influence of driven fields on spontaneous emission spectra of k and q photons are investigated. The interesting phenomena including spectral line narrowing, enhancement, suppression and quenching, are observed by adjusting driven fields and detunings.

Control of Spontaneous Emission of a Four-level Atom by a Microwave Field with Lower Frequency

Nian-Hua Liu

We investigate theoretically the features of the spontaneous emission spectrum of a four-level atomic system driven by a coherent probe field,a coupling laser field and a microwave field. The two upper levels are coupled by a microwave field with lower frequency. The time evolution of the populations is calculated. It is shown that the spectra behavior, such as spectral-line narrowing,spectral-line enhancement,spectral-line suppression, and total cancellation of fluorescence quenching, can be easily controlled by changing the phase and the amplitude of the microwave field.

Modification and control of coherence effects in the spontaneous emission spectrum of a three-level atom at weak field regime

Bibhas Kumar Dutta, Pradipta Panchadhyayee

Abstract It has been shown that coherence effects have a marked influence in the spontaneous emission spectrum of a three-level Λ -type atom driven by weak coherent and incoherent fields. Phase dependent evolution of interference effects leading to spectral narrowing, generation of spectral hole and dark line are exhibited in the present scheme when the atom does not interact with the incoherent fields. The basic mechanism underlying this scheme seems to be appropriate for a phaseonium. Apart from phase-coherence introduced in the system the phenomenon of line narrowing, in the presence of weak incoherent pumping, can be achieved in a different way as a consequence of two competitive resonant effects: sharp non-Lorentzian and symmetric Fano-like-resonance contributions to the line shape. In both the situations, the evolution of narrow structures in the line shape can be achieved even when the emission is influenced by the dephasing of Raman coherence.
