Stabilizing open quantum systems by Markovian reservoir engineering

Abstract

We study open quantum systems whose evolution is governed by a master equation of Kossakowski-Gorini-Sudarshan-Lindblad type and give a characterization of the convex set of steady states of such systems based on the generalized Bloch representation. It is shown that an isolated steady state of the Bloch equation cannot be a center, i.e., that the existence of a unique steady state implies attractivity and global asymptotic stability. Necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique steady state are derived and applied to different physical models, including two- and four-level atoms, (truncated) harmonic oscillators, and composite and decomposable systems. It is shown how these criteria could be exploited in principle for quantum reservoir engineeing via coherent control and direct feedback to stabilize the system to a desired steady state. We also discuss the question of limit points of the dynamics. Despite the nonexistence of isolated centers, open quantum systems can have nontrivial invariant sets. These invariant sets are center manifolds that arise when the Bloch superoperator has purely imaginary eigenvalues and are closely related to decoherence-free subspaces.

Quantum i.i.d. Steady States in Open Many-Body Systems

Ishii, Takanao, Masahito Ueda

Understanding how a quantum many-body state is maintained stably as a nonequilibrium steady state is of fundamental and practical importance for exploration and exploitation of open quantum systems. We establish a general equivalent condition for an open quantum many-body system governed by the Gorini-Kossakowski-Sudarshan-Lindblad dynamics under local drive and/or dissipation to have a quantum independent and identically distributed (i.i.d.) steady state. We present a sufficient condition for a system to have a quantum i.i.d. steady state by identifying a set of operators that commute with arbitrary quantum i.i.d. states. In particular, a set of quantum i.i.d. states is found to be an invariant subset of time evolution superoperators for systems that satisfy the sufficient condition. These findings not only identify a class of models with exactly solvable steady states but also lead to a no-go theorem that precludes quantum entanglement and spatial correlations in a broad class of quantum many-body steady states in a dissipative environment.

On the uniqueness of the steady-state solution of the Lindblad–Gorini–Kossakowski–Sudarshan equation

Davide Nigro

Abstract The aims of this paper are twofold. The first aim is to give a brief review of the most relevant theoretical results concerning the uniqueness of the steady-state solution of the Lindblad–Gorini–Kossakowski–Sudarshan master equation and the criteria which guarantee relaxingness and irreducibility of dynamical semigroups. In particular, we test and discuss their physical meaning by considering their applicability to the characterisation of the simplest open quantum system i.e. a two-level system coupled to a bath of harmonic oscillators at zero temperature. The second aim is to provide a set of sufficient conditions which guarantees the uniqueness of the steady-state solution and its attractivity. Starting from simple assumptions, we derive simple criteria that can be efficiently exploited to characterise the behavior of dissipative systems of spins and bosons (with truncated Fock space), and a wide variety of other open quantum systems recently studied.

Nature and Origin of Operators Entering the Master Equation of an Open Quantum System

Giovanni Spaventa, Paola Verrucchi

By exploiting the peculiarities of a recently introduced formalism for describing open quantum systems (the parametric representation with environmental coherent states) we derive an equation of motion for the reduced density operator of an open quantum system that has the same structure of the celebrated Gorini–Kossakowski–Sudarshan–Lindblad equation, but holds regardless of Markovianity being assumed. The operators in our result have explicit expressions in terms of the Hamiltonian describing the interactions with the environment, and can be computed once a specific model is considered. We find that, instead of a single set of Lindblad operators, in the general (non-Markovian) case there one set of Lindblad-like operators for each and every point of a symplectic manifold associated to the environment. This intricacy disappears under some assumptions (which are related to Markovianity and the classical limit of the environment), under which it is possible to recover the usual master-equation formalism. Finally, we find such Lindblad-like operators for two different models of a qubit in a bosonic environment, and show that in the classical limit of the environment their renown master equations are recovered.

Generalized Lindblad master equations in quantum reservoir engineering

Diego N. Bernal-García, Lujun Huang, Andrey E. Miroshnichenko +1 more

Reservoir engineering has proven to be a practical approach to control open quantum systems, preserving quantum coherence by appropriately manipulating the reservoir and system-reservoir interactions. In this context, for systems comprised of different parts, it is common to describe the dynamics of a subsystem of interest by making an adiabatic elimination of the remaining components of the system. This procedure often leads to an effective master equation for the subsystem that is not in the well-known Gorini-Kossakowski-Lindblad-Sudarshan form (here called standard Lindblad form). Instead, it has a more general structure (here called generalized Lindblad form), which explicitly reveals the dissipative coupling between the various components of the subsystem. In this work, we present a set of dynamical equations for the first and second moments of the canonical variables for linear systems, bosonic and fermionic, described by master equations in a generalized Lindblad form. Our method is efficient and allows one to obtain analytical solutions for the steady state. Further, we include as a review some covariance matrix methods for which our results are particularly relevant, paying special attention to those related to the measurement of entanglement. Finally, we prove that the Duan criterion for entanglement is also applicable to fermionic systems.

Quantum Markovian Subsystems: Invariance, Attractivity, and Control

Francesco Ticozzi, Lorenza Viola

We characterize the dynamical behavior of continuous-time, Markovian quantum systems with respect to a subsystem of interest. Markovian dynamics describes a wide class of open quantum systems of relevance to quantum information processing, subsystem encodings offering a general pathway to faithfully represent quantum information. We provide explicit linear-algebraic characterizations of the notion of invariant and noiseless subsystem for Markovian master equations, under different robustness assumptions for model-parameter and initial-state variations. The stronger concept of an attractive quantum subsystem is introduced, and sufficient existence conditions are identified based on Lyapunov's stability techniques. As a main control application, we address the potential of output-feedback Markovian control strategies for quantum pure state-stabilization and noiseless-subspace generation. In particular, explicit results for the synthesis of stabilizing semigroups and noiseless subspaces in finite-dimensional Markovian systems are obtained.
