Decoherence in two-dimensional quantum random walks with traps

Abstract

Quantum random walk in a two-dimensional lattice with randomly distributed traps is investigated. Distributions of quantum walkers are evaluated dynamically for the cases of Hadamard, Fourier, and Grover coins, and quantum to classical transition is examined as a function of the density of the traps. It is shown that traps act as a serious and additional source of quantum decoherence. Furthermore, nontrivial temporal dependence of the standard deviation of the probability distribution of the walker is found when the trapping imperfections are introduced.

Survival probability in a one-dimensional quantum walk on a trapped lattice

Meltem Gönülol, Ekrem Aydıner, Yutaka Shikano +1 more

The dynamics of the survival probability of quantum walkers on a one-dimensional lattice with random distribution of absorbing immobile traps is investigated. The survival probability of quantum walkers is compared with that of classical walkers. It is shown that the time dependence of the survival probability of quantum walkers has a piecewise stretched exponential character depending on the density of traps in numerical and analytical observations. The crossover between the quantum analogues of the Rosenstock and Donsker–Varadhan behavior is identified.

Decoherence in two-dimensional quantum walks

Amanda C. Oliveira, Renato Portugal, R. Donangelo

We analyze the decoherence in quantum walks in two-dimensional lattices generated by broken-link-type noise. In this type of decoherence, the links of the lattice are randomly broken with some given constant probability. We obtain the evolution equation for a quantum walker moving on two-dimensional (2D) lattices subject to this noise, and we point out how to generalize for lattices in more dimensions. In the nonsymmetric case, when the probability of breaking links in one direction is different from the probability in the perpendicular direction, we have obtained a nontrivial result. If one fixes the link-breaking probability in one direction, and gradually increases the probability in the other direction from 0 to 1, the decoherence initially increases until it reaches a maximum value, and then it decreases. This means that, in some cases, one can increase the noise level and still obtain more coherence. Physically, this can be explained as a transition from a decoherent 2D walk to a coherent 1D walk.

Incoherent tunneling effects in a one-dimensional quantum walk

Mostafa Annabestani, Seyed Javad Akhtarshenas, Mohamad Reza Abolhassani

Abstract In this article we investigate the effects of shifting position decoherence, arising from the incoherent tunneling effect in the experimental realization of the quantum walk, on the one-dimensional discrete time quantum walk. We show that in the regime of this type of noise the quantum behavior of the walker does not vanish, in contrast to the coin decoherence for which the walker undergoes a quantum-to-classical transition even for weak noise. In particular, we show that the quadratic dependence of the variance on the time and also the coin–position entanglement, i.e. two important quantum aspects of the coherent quantum walk, are preserved in the presence of tunneling decoherence. Furthermore, we present an explicit expression for the probability distribution of the decoherent one-dimensional quantum walk in terms of the corresponding coherent probabilities, and show that this type of decoherence smooths the probability distribution.

Coherence evolution in two-dimensional quantum walk on lattice

Zhimin He, Zhiming Huang, Lvzhou Li +1 more

We investigate the evolution of the [Formula: see text] norm coherence in two-dimensional quantum walk on lattices for Fourier, Grover and Hadamard coins. Our study shows that the coherence of both the whole system and the position subsystem increases quadratically with the number of steps. We also analyze the influence of three kinds of noises, i.e. broken links, lattice congestion and lattice traps, on the two-dimensional quantum walk. The result shows that the increase of coherence with the number of steps gradually inclines to be linear as the probabilities of broken links and lattice congestion increase. In the quantum walk on trapped lattices, the coherence increases with the increasing time step before the crossover time [Formula: see text] and then gradually decreases after [Formula: see text].

Directional quantum random walk induced by coherence

Jin-Fu Chen, Yu-Han Ma, Chang-Pu Sun

Quantum walk (QW), which is considered as the quantum counterpart of the classical random walk (CRW), is actually the quantum extension of CRW from the single-coin interpretation. The sequential unitary evolution engenders correlation between different steps in QW and leads to a non-binomial position distribution. In this paper, we propose an alternative quantum extension of CRW from the ensemble interpretation, named quantum random walk (QRW), where the walker has many unrelated coins, modeled as two-level systems, initially prepared in the same state. We calculate the walker’s position distribution in QRW for different initial coin states with the coin operator chosen as Hadamard matrix. In one-dimensional case, the walker’s position is the asymmetric binomial distribution. We further demonstrate that in QRW, coherence leads the walker to perform directional movement. For an initially decoherenced coin state, the walker’s position distribution is exactly the same as that of CRW. Moreover, we study QRW in 2D lattice, where the coherence plays a more diversified role in the walker’s position distribution.

FLUCTUATIONS OF QUANTUM RANDOM WALKS ON CIRCLES

Norio Inui, Yoshinao Konishi, Norio Konno +1 more

Temporal fluctuations in the Hadamard walk on circles are studied. A temporal standard deviation of probability that a quantum random walker is positive at a given site is introduced to manifest striking differences between quantum and classical random walks. An analytical expression of the temporal standard deviation on a circle with odd sites is shown and its asymptotic behavior is considered for large system size. In contrast with classical random walks, the temporal fluctuation of quantum random walks depends on the position and initial conditions, since temporal standard deviation of the classical case is zero for any site. It indicates that the temporal fluctuation of the Hadamard walk can be controlled.
