Dynamics for partially coherent Bose-Einstein condensates in double wells

Abstract

The dynamical properties of partially coherent Bose-Einstein condensates in double wells are investigated in three typical regimes. In the extreme Fock regime, the time evolution of the degree of coherence is shown to decay rapidly. In the Rabi regime, a relation between the amplitude of Rabi oscillation and the degree of coherence is obtained, which is expected to determine the degree of coherence by measuring the amplitude of Rabi oscillation. The study on the self-trapping phenomena in the Josephson regime exhibits that both the degree of coherence and the initial relative phase can affect the final particle distribution.

Dynamical properties of partially coherent Bose‐Einstein condensates in double wells

Li-Hua Lü, You‐Quan Li

Abstract Some dynamical features of partially coherent Bose‐Einstein condensate systems confined in double‐well potentials are investigated in mean field approximation. For one‐component system, the phenomena of self‐trapping is studied and it is shown that the partially coherent system, like completely coherent one, can also exhibit self‐trapping phenomena which are affected by both the degree of coherence and the initial relative phase. The adiabatic properties are also studied by introducing the fidelity for mixed state. It is shown that the introduced fidelity can characterize the adiabatic condition of the partially coherent system. For two‐component system, the time evolution of the degree of coherence for a time‐dependent tunneling strength is investigated. The corresponding results imply that the degree of coherence for such a two‐component system can exhibit decoherence phenomena even without the condensate‐environment coupling.

Decoherence of a quantum harmonic oscillator monitored by a Bose-Einstein condensate

S. Brouard, Daniel Alonso, D. Sokolovski

We investigate the dynamics of a quantum oscillator, whose evolution is monitored by a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) trapped in a symmetric double-well potential. It is demonstrated that the oscillator may experience various degrees of decoherence depending on the variable being measured and the state in which the BEC is prepared. These range from a ``coherent'' regime in which only the variances of the oscillator position and momentum are affected by measurement, to a slow (power-law) or rapid (Gaussian) decoherence of the mean values themselves.

Rabi–Josephson oscillations and self-trapped dynamics in atomic junctions with two bosonic species

G. Mazzarella, Boris A. Malomed, Luca Salasnich +2 more

We investigate the dynamics of two-component Bose–Einstein condensates, composed of atoms in two distinct hyperfine states, which are linearly coupled by two-photon Raman transitions. The condensate is loaded into a double-well potential. A variety of dynamical behaviour, ranging from regular Josephson oscillations to mixed Rabi–Josephson oscillations and to regimes featuring increasing complexity are described in terms of a reduced Hamiltonian system with four degrees of freedoms, which are the numbers of atoms in each component in the left and right potential wells, whose canonically conjugate variables are phases of the corresponding wavefunctions. Using the system with four degrees of freedom, we study the dynamics of fractional imbalances of the two bosonic components and compare the results to direct simulations of the Gross–Pitaevskii equations describing the bosonic mixture. We perform this analysis when the fractional imbalance oscillates around a zero-time averaged value and in the self-trapping regime as well.

The role of inter-well tunnelling strength on coherence dynamics of two-species Bose–Einstein condensates

Li-Hua Lü, Xiaoqiang Xu, You‐Quan Li

Coherence dynamics of two-species Bose–Einstein condensates in double wells is investigated in the mean-field approximation. We show that the system can exhibit decoherence phenomena even without the condensate–environment coupling and the variation tendency of the degree of coherence depends not only on the parameters of the system but also the initial states. We also investigate the time evolution of the degree of coherence for a Rosen–Zener form of tunnelling strength, and propose a method to get a condensate system with a certain degree of coherence through a time-dependent tunnelling strength.

Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential as an open quantum system

Janne Ruostekoski, Daniel F. Walls

We study the dynamics of a Bose-Einstein condensate in a double-well potential in the two-mode approximation. The dissipation of energy from the condensate is described by the coupling to a thermal reservoir of noncondensate modes. As a consequence of the coupling, the self-locked population imbalance in the macroscopic quantum self-trapping decays away. We show that a coherent state predicted by spontaneous symmetry breaking is not robust and decoheres rapidly into a statistical mixture due to the interactions between condensate and noncondensate atoms. However, via stochastic simulations we find that with a sufficiently fast measurement rate of the relative phase between the two wells the matter wave coherence is established even in the presence of the decoherence.

Quantum Bose–Josephson junction with binary mixtures of BECs

Adele Naddeo, R. Citro

We study the quantum behaviour of a binary mixture of Bose–Einstein condensates in a double-well potential starting from a two-mode Bose–Hubbard Hamiltonian. We focus on the small tunnelling amplitude regime and apply perturbation theory up to second order. Analytical expressions for the energy eigenvalues and eigenstates are obtained. Then, the quantum evolution of the number difference of bosons between the two potential wells is fully investigated for two different initial conditions: completely localized states and coherent spin states. In the first case both the short- and the long-time dynamics is studied and a rich behaviour is found, ranging from small amplitude oscillations and collapses and revivals to coherent tunnelling. In the second case, the short-timescale evolution of number difference is determined and a more irregular dynamics is evidenced. Finally, the formation of Schrödinger cat states is considered and shown to affect the momentum distribution.
