Abstract

We study the spin dynamics of a spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interaction (MDDI) based on the Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov theories. We find that various magnetic structures such as checkerboards and stripes emerge in the course of the dynamics due to the combined effects of spin-exchange interaction, MDDI, quadratic Zeeman and finite-size effects, and nonstationary initial conditions. However, the short-range magnetic order observed by the Berkeley group [Phys. Rev. Lett. 100, 170403 (2008)] is not fully reproduced in our calculations; the periodicity of the order differs by a factor of 3 and the checkerboard pattern eventually dissolves in the course of time. Possible reasons for the discrepancy are discussed.

Spin Hall effect in a spinor dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate

T. Oshima, Yuki Kawaguchi

We theoretically show that the spin Hall effect arises in a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of neutral atoms interacting via the magnetic dipole-dipole interactions (MDDIs). Since the MDDI couples the total spin angular momentum and the relative orbital angular momentum of two colliding atoms, it works as a spin-orbit coupling. Thus, when we prepare a BEC in a magnetic sublevel $m=0$, thermally and quantum-mechanically excited atoms in the $m=1$ and $\ensuremath{-}1$ states feel the Lorentz-like forces in the opposite directions. This is the origin for the emergence of the spin Hall effect. We define the mass-current and spin-current operators from the equations of continuity and calculate the spin Hall conductivity from the off-diagonal current-current correlation function within the Bogoliubov approximation. We find that the correction of the current operators due to the MDDI significantly contributes to the spin Hall conductivity. A possible experimental situation is also discussed.

Spontaneous Circulation in Ground-State Spinor Dipolar Bose-Einstein Condensates

Yuki Kawaguchi, Hiroki Saito, Masahito Ueda

We report on a study of the spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate with magnetic dipole-dipole interactions. By solving the nonlocal Gross-Pitaevskii equations for this system, we find three ground-state phases. Moreover, we show that a substantial orbital angular momentum accompanied by chiral symmetry breaking emerges spontaneously in a certain parameter regime. We predict that all these phases can be observed in the spin-1 87Rb condensate by changing the number of atoms or the trap frequency.

Ferromagnetic resonance in spinor dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

Masashi Yasunaga, Makoto Tsubota

We used the Gross-Pitaevskii equations to investigate ferromagnetic resonance in spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensates with a magnetic dipole-dipole interaction. By introducing the dipole interaction, we obtained equations similar to the Kittel equations used to represent ferromagnetic resonance in condensed-matter physics. These equations indicated that the ferromagnetic resonance originated from dipolar interaction, and that the resonance frequency depended upon the shape of the condensate. Furthermore, spin currents driven by spin diffusions are characteristic of this system.

Symmetry-breaking magnetization dynamics of spinor dipolar Bose-Einstein condensates

Shoichi Hoshi, Hiroki Saito

The symmetry-breaking magnetization dynamics of a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) due to the dipole-dipole interaction are investigated using the mean-field and Bogoliubov theories. When a magnetic field is applied along the symmetry axis of a pancake-shaped BEC in the $m=0$ hyperfine sublevel, transverse magnetization develops breaking the chiral or axial symmetry. A variety of magnetization patterns are formed depending on the strength of the applied magnetic field. The proposed phenomena can be observed in $^{87}\mathrm{Rb}$ and $^{23}\mathrm{Na}$ condensates.

Role of magnetic field in three-component antiferromagnetic dipolar Bose gases

Qiang Zhao

In this paper, we study the dynamics properties of three-component antiferromagnetic dipolar Bose–Einstein condensates with external magnetic field. Our results are obtained by numerical simulations of the spinor Gross–Pitaevskii equation. We find that the population of the spin components is seriously influenced by magnetic field. The dynamical evolution process is accelerated in the presence of magnetic field. As a result, the periodic oscillation of spin exchange dynamics emerges and the components [Formula: see text] have the same amplitude. In addition, the density profile displays that the influences of dipolar interaction are masked by magnetic field. Moreover, we introduce an order parameter to characterize the disorder-order crossover, where it is seen that the system develops toward the disordered state with strong dipole strength when magnetic field is included.
