Abstract

The dynamic behavior of the entanglement for two two-level atoms coupled to a common lossy cavity is studied. We find that the speed of disentanglement is a decreasing (increasing) function of the damping rate of the cavity for on/near (far-off) resonant couplings. The quantitative explanations for these phenomena are given, and further, it is shown that they are related to the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effect induced by the non-Markovian environment.

Quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects on the entanglement dynamics of qubits dissipating into a common and non-Markovian environment

Alireza Nourmandipour, Mohammad Kazem Tavassoly, M. A. Bolorizadeh

We investigate the quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects on pairwise entanglement dynamics of a collective of noninteracting qubits which have been initially prepared in a Werner state and are off-resonantly coupled to a common and non-Markovian environment. We obtain the analytical expression of the concurrence in the absence and presence of the nonselective measurements. In particular, we express our results in the strong and weak coupling regimes and examine the role of the system size and the effect of the detuning from the cavity field frequency on the temporal behavior of the pairwise entanglement. We show that the detuning parameter has a positive role in protection of entanglement in the absence of the measurement for the weak coupling regime. We find that for the values of detuning parameter less than the cavity damping rate, the quantum Zeno effect is always dominant, while for values greater than the cavity damping rate, both Zeno and anti-Zeno effects can occur, depending on the measurement intervals. We also find that the anti-Zeno effect can occur in the pairwise entanglement dynamics in the absence and presence of the detuning in the strong coupling regime.

Off-resonant quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects on entanglement

Francesco Francica, Sabrina Maniscalco, Francesco Plastina

We examine the appearance of Zeno and anti-Zeno effects (Misra and Sudarshan 1977 J. Math. Phys. 18 756; Kofman and Kurizki 2000 Nature 405 546; Kofman and Kurizki 1996 Phys. Rev. A 54 3750; Facchi et al 2001 Phys. Rev. Lett. 86 2699) in the entanglement dynamics of two qubits off-resonantly coupled to the same lossy cavity when the unitary evolution of the system is interrupted by repeated projective measurements. We describe in detail these quantum effects by comparing the measurement-induced coarse-grained dynamics to the entanglement evolution in the absence of measurements in several scenarios (Francica et al 2009 Phys. Rev. A 79 032310). In particular, we examine the strong and weak coupling regimes, the role of the relative coupling strengths between the two qubits and the reservoir and the effect of the detuning from the main cavity frequency. We show that the anti-Zeno effect can occur in the entanglement dynamics when the qubit frequencies are detuned from the main reservoir frequency. Furthermore, we find that Zeno and anti-Zeno effects can even appear sequentially many times as a function of the interval between the measurements. Finally, we show that, in the off-resonant regime, we can preserve the entanglement using the quantum Zeno effect more efficiently than in the resonant limit (Maniscalco et al 2008 Phys. Rev. Lett. 100 090503), even if, in this case, no sub-radiant state exists.

Quantum Zeno and anti-Zeno effects on quantum and classical correlations

Francesco Francica, Sabrina Maniscalco, Francesco Plastina

In this paper we study the possibility of modifying the dynamics of both quantum correlations, such as entanglement and discord, and classical correlations of an open bipartite system by means of the quantum Zeno effect. We consider two qubits coupled to a common boson reservoir at zero temperature. This model describes, for example, two atoms interacting with a quantized mode of a lossy cavity. We show that when the frequencies of the two atoms are symmetrically detuned from that of the cavity mode, oscillations between the Zeno and anti-Zeno regimes occur. We also calculate analytically the time evolution of both classical correlations and quantum discord, and we compare the Zeno dynamics of entanglement with the Zeno dynamics of classical correlations and discord.

Non-Markovianity during the quantum Zeno effect

Alagu Thilagam

We examine the Zeno and anti-Zeno effects in the context of non-Markovian dynamics in entangled spin-boson systems in contact with noninteracting reservoirs. We identify enhanced non-Markovian signatures in specific two-qubit partitions of a Bell-like initial state, with results showing that the intra-qubit Zeno effect or anti-Zeno effect occurs in conjunction with inter-qubit non-Markovian dynamics for a range of system parameters. The time domain of effective Zeno or anti-Zeno dynamics is about the same order of magnitude as the non-Markovian time scale of the reservoir correlation dynamics, and changes in decay rate due to the Zeno mechanism appears coordinated with information flow between specific two-qubit partitions. We extend our analysis to examine the Zeno mechanism-non-Markovianity link using the tripartite states arising from a donor-acceptor-sink model of photosynthetic biosystems.

Coherence by environmental decoherence in the damped and dephased Jaynes-Cummings models

Juan Mauricio Torres, T. H. Seligman

We study two extensions to the Jaynes Cummings model described by Markovian master equations with Lindblad operators causing either dephasing or photon losses solely involving the cavity mode. We treat the two-level atom as the central system under investigation, while the mode of the cavity plays the role of a near environment coupled via the Lindblad operators to an imagined far environment. We show that increasing the dephasing or damping parameter of the cavity systematically slows the decoherence of the atom. The exact solvability allows us to determine the relation to the quantum Zeno effect and the perturbative regime.
