Abstract

We carry out relativistic many-body calculations of the static and dynamic dipole polarizabilities of the ground 6s 2 1 S 0 and the first excited 6s6p 3 P o 0 states of Yb. With these polarizabilities, we compute several properties of Yb relevant to optical lattice clocks operating on the 6s 2 1 S 0 –6s6p 3 P o 0 transition. We determine (i) the first four magic wavelengths of the laser field for which the frequency of the clock transition is insensitive to the laser intensity. While the first magic wavelength is known, we predict the second, the third and the fourth magic wavelengths to be 551 nm, 465 nm and 413 nm. (ii) We re-evaluate the effect of black-body radiation on the frequency of the clock transition, the resulting clock shift at T = 300 K being −1.41(17) Hz. (iii) We compute long-range interatomic van der Waals coefficients (in a.u.) C 6 (6s 2 1 S 0 + 6s 2 1 S 0 ) = 1909(160), C 6 (6s 2 1 S 0 + 6s6p 3 P 0 ) = 2709(338) and C 6 (6s6p 3 P 0 + 6s6p 3 P 0 ) = 3886(360). Finally, we determine the atom-wall interaction coefficients (in a.u.), C 3 (6s 2 1 S 0 ) = 3.34 and C 3 (6s6p 3 P 0 ) = 3.68. We also address and resolve a disagreement between previous calculations of the static polarizability of the ground state.

Polarizability and magic wavelength of Yb+clock transition2S1/2 →2D3/2

Atish Roy, Subhadeep De, Bindiya Arora +1 more

Differential static polarizability and black body radiation (BBR) shift for Ytterbium ion (171Yb+) clock transition from ground state2S1/2to metastable state2D3/2corresponding to the wavelength 435.5 nm are calculated accurately for frequency standard applications. The values are found to be −7.5(5) × 10−40Jm2/V and −0.4(1) Hz, respectively, which are well in agreement with pre-available data and more accurate than the previous theoretical results. We further determine the values of dynamic polarizability of these states to find out the magic and tune-out wavelengths for the above mentioned clock transition.

Ytterbium in Quantum Gases and Atomic Clocks: van der Waals Interactions and Blackbody Shifts

Marianna S. Safronova, S. G. Porsev, Charles W. Clark

We evaluated the C(6) coefficients of Yb-Yb, Yb-alkali, and Yb-group II van der Waals interactions with 2% uncertainty. The only existing experimental result for such quantities is for the Yb-Yb dimer. Our value, C(6)=1929(39) a.u., is in excellent agreement with the recent experimental determination of 1932(35) a.u. We have also developed a new approach for the calculation of the dynamic correction to the blackbody radiation shift. We have calculated this quantity for the Yb 6s(2) (1)S(0)-6s6p (3)P(0)(o) clock transition with 3.5% uncertainty. This reduces the fractional uncertainty due to the blackbody radiation shift in the Yb optical clock at 300 K to the 10(-18) level.

The electric-dipole dynamic polarizabilities of the 6 s 2 1 S 0 and 6 s 6 p 3 P 1 states of Yb atom are calculated by using the CI+MBPT method. Magic wavelengths for the 6 s 2 1 S 0 - 6 s 6 p 3 P 1 transition are identified.

Abstract We present precise values of the dipole polarizabilities ( α ) of the ground [ 4 f 14 6 s ] 2 S 1 / 2 and metastable [ 4 f 14 5 d ] 2 D 3 / 2 states of Yb + , that are important in reducing systematics in the clock frequency of the [ 4 f 14 6 s ] 2 S 1 / 2 → [ 4 f 14 5 d ] 2 D 3 / 2 transition. The static values of α for the ground and [ 4 f 14 5 d ] 2 D 3 / 2 states are estimated to be 9.8 ( 1 ) × 10

Optical Lattice Induced Light Shifts in an Yb Atomic Clock

Zeb W. Barber, J. E. Stalnaker, N. Lemke +8 more

We present an experimental study of the lattice-induced light shifts on the (1)S(0) --> (3)P(0) optical clock transition (nu(clock) approximately 518 THz) in neutral ytterbium. The "magic" frequency nu(magic) for the 174Yb isotope was determined to be 394 799 475(35) MHz, which leads to a first order light shift uncertainty of 0.38 Hz. We also investigated the hyperpolarizability shifts due to the nearby 6s6p(3)P(0) --> 6s8p(3)P(0), 6s8p(3)P(2), and 6s5f(3)F(2) two-photon resonances at 759.708, 754.23, and 764.95 nm, respectively. By measuring the corresponding clock transition shifts near these two-photon resonances, the hyperpolarizability shift was estimated to be 170(33) mHz for a linear polarized, 50 microK deep, lattice at the magic wavelength. These results indicate that the differential polarizability and hyperpolarizability frequency shift uncertainties in a Yb lattice clock could be held to well below 10(-17).

Abstract The static and dynamic electric dipole polarizabilities of the 6 s 2 1 S 0 and 6 s 6 p 3 P 1 o states of Yb are calculated by using the relativistic ab initio method. Focusing on the red detuning region to the 6 s 2 1 S 0 – 6 s 6 p 3 P 1 o transition, we find two magic wavelengths at 1035.7(2) and 612.9(2) nm for the 6 s 2 1 S 0 – 6 s 6 p 3 P 1 o , M J = 0 transition and three magic wavelengths at 1517.68(6), 1036.0(3) and 858(12) nm for the 6 s 2 1 S 0 – 6 <mm
