Abstract

We derive the moment generating function for photon emissions from a single molecule driven by laser excitation. The frequencies of the fluoresced photons are explicitly considered. Calculations are performed for the case of a two-level dye molecule, showing that measured photon statistics will display a strong and nonintuitive dependence on detector bandwidth. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the antibunching phenomenon, associated with negative values of Mandel's Q parameter, results from correlations between photons with well separated frequencies.

Photon emission statistics and photon tracking in single-molecule spectroscopy of molecular aggregates: Dimers and trimers

Erik A. Bloemsma, Jasper Knoester

Based on the generating function formalism, we investigate broadband photon statistics of emission for single dimers and trimers driven by a continuous monochromatic laser field. In particular, we study the first and second moments of the emission statistics, which are the fluorescence excitation line shape and Mandel's Q parameter. Numerical results for this line shape and the Q parameter versus laser frequency in the limit of long measurement times are obtained. We show that in the limit of small Rabi frequencies and laser frequencies close to resonance with one of the one-exciton states, the results for the line shape and Q parameter reduce to those of a two-level monomer. For laser frequencies halfway the transition frequency of a two-exciton state, the photon bunching effect associated with two-photon absorption processes is observed. This super-Poissonian peak is characterized in terms of the ratio between the two-photon absorption line shape and the underlying two-level monomer line shapes. Upon increasing the Rabi frequency, the Q parameter shows a transition from super- to sub- to super-Poissonian statistics. Results of broadband photon statistics are also discussed in the context of a transition (frequency) resolved photon detection scheme, photon tracking, which provides a greater insight in the different physical processes that occur in the multi-level systems.

Theory of single molecule emission spectroscopy

Golan Bel, Frank L. H. Brown

A general theory and calculation framework for the prediction of frequency-resolved single molecule photon counting statistics is presented. Expressions for the generating function of photon counts are derived, both for the case of naive "detection" based solely on photon emission from the molecule and also for experimentally realizable detection of emitted photons, and are used to explicitly calculate low-order photon-counting moments. The two cases of naive detection versus physical detection are compared to one another and it is demonstrated that the physical detection scheme resolves certain inconsistencies predicted via the naive detection approach. Applications to two different models for molecular dynamics are considered: a simple two-level system and a two-level absorber subject to spectral diffusion.

Single molecule photon emission statistics of driven three-level systems

Yonggang Peng, Yujun Zheng, Frank L. H. Brown

We study the statistics of photon emission from three-level single molecule systems. The generating function method [Y. Zheng and F. L. H. Brown, Phys. Rev. Lett. 90, 238305 (2003)] is used to calculate steady state absorption line shapes and Mandel's Q parameter as a function of excitation frequency, as well as the time dependence associated with approach to the steady state. The line shape calculations confirm known results derived via other methods, while the Q parameter results display complex frequency dependences not amenable to simple interpretation. This study confirms the applicability of the generating function formalism to multilevel quantum systems, including the proper modeling of quantum coherence effects.

The effect of environment on fluorescence photon statistics of single molecule system

Han Bai

The fluorescence photon emission of single molecule two-level system (TLS) simultaneously driven by the laser and electric radio frequency (RF) fields is investigated, using the generating function method developed recently. The fluorescence photon statistical properties of single molecule TLS are studied theoretically, under the single laser pulse field and the single RF pulse. Further, we can control the photon emission of two-level system.

Photon Statistical Properties Emitted from Single Molecule Derived from Generating Function Method

In this paper, we summarize the photon emission statistical properties of single molecule system, using the recently developed generating function method. Through the introduce of one or double “auxiliary” variables, we can investigate the first moment and second moment of photon emission statistics driven by different external fields, such as the line shapes and Mandel's Q parameters, the photon emission probabilities, the probability distribution of time between successive emission, the waiting time and the waiting time distribution, the cross correlation, the joint probabilities, etc. Among, the first moment of photon statistics and the experimental results of optical amplification are in good agreement.

Broadband strong photon correlations of frequency-resolved single-atom resonance fluorescence generated by two equal-frequency laser fields with different amplitudes

Su-jing Liu, Ze-an Peng, Xu‐xing Geng +3 more

Abstract Frequency-resolved photon statistics of resonance fluorescence generated from a two-level system driven by a strong laser field and a weak laser field with equal frequencies are studied. The frequency resolution of fluorescent radiation is described by quantum filtering dynamics, which is simulated theoretically by two single-mode quantum optical cavities with tunable frequencies to scan the incident fluorescent radiation. By calculating the two-photon intensity–intensity correlation functions in terms of the cavity modes, we demonstrate that two-color strong correlations of resonance fluorescence can be generated not only between the opposite sidebands, but also between the central band and one of the sidebands: although both sidebands are broadened due to the perturbation of the weak laser field on the strong-field dressed atom. We emphasize that these properties are in contrast to the conventional case of the standard single-atom Mollow triplet. Moreover, if the resonance frequencies of the two filtering cavities are tuned appropriately, broadband two-color strong correlations are predicted, and the physical origin is revealed from the perspective of quantum interference of photon emission dynamics. This can be considered as a feasible scheme for the design of broadband non-classical light sources, and may be beneficial to the quantum precise detection of atomic and molecular dynamics via quantum optical spectroscopy.
