Abstract

We study the behavior of magnetization curve as a function of magnetic field in the immediate vicinity of the magnetization plateaus of one-dimensional (1D) electron systems within the bosonization formalism. First we discuss the plateau that is formed at the saturation magnetization of 1D electron system. We treat interactions between electrons in the lowest order of perturbation. We show that for isolated systems, where total number of electrons is not allowed to vary, magnetic susceptibility stays always finite away of half filling. Similar statement holds for many other magnetization plateaus supporting nonmagnetic gapless excitations encountered in 1D electron/spin systems in the absence of special symmetries or features responsible for the mode decoupling. We demonstrate it on example of the plateaus at irrational values of magnetization in doped modulated Hubbard chains. Finally we discuss the connection between the weak coupling description of saturation magnetization plateau and strong coupling description of zero magnetization plateau of attractively interacting electrons.

Emergence of irrationality: Magnetization plateaus in modulated Hubbard chains

D. C. Cabra, Alessandro De Martino, A. Honecker +2 more

Hubbard chains with periodically modulated coupling constants in a magnetic field exhibit gaps at zero temperature in their magnetic and charge excitations in a variety of situations. In addition to fully gapped situations (plateau in the magnetization curve and charge gap), we have shown [Phys. Lett. A 268, 418 (2000)] that plateaus also appear in the presence of massless modes, leading to a plateau with a magnetization m whose value depends continuously on the filling n. Here we detail and extend the arguments leading to such doping-dependent magnetization plateaus. First we analyze the low-lying excitations using Abelian bosonization. We compute the susceptibility and show that due to the constraint of fixed n, it vanishes at low temperatures (thus leading to a magnetization plateau) even in the presence of one massless mode. Next we study correlation functions and show that one component of the superconducting order parameter develops quasi-long-range order on a doping-dependent magnetization plateau. We then use perturbation theory in the on-site repulsion U to compute the width of these plateaus up to first order in U. Finally, we compute ground state phase diagrams and correlation functions by Lanczos diagonalization of finite clusters, confirming the presence of doping-dependent plateaus and their special properties.

Magnetization Curve for the Half-Filled Hubbard Model

Minoru Takahashi

The lowest energies of the one-dimensional half-filled Hubbard model as a function of the total spin are computed from the exact solution of one-dimensional interacting fermions. The lowest energies are used to calculate the magnetization curve at zero temperature. In the case of repulsive interaction our work is an extension of Griffiths' theory for the Heisenberg model to the itinerant electron model of antiferromagnet. In the case of attractive interaction it is shown that the magnetic susceptibility in zero field vanishes.

EXACT GROUND-STATE PROPERTIES OF ONE-DIMENSIONAL HUBBARD MODEL IN THE PRESENCE OF MAGNETIC FIELD

Chia‐Wei Yang, ARMEN N. KOCHARIAN, Y. L. Chiang

The exact phase diagram and the ground-state properties of the one-dimensional Hubbard model with arbitrary on-site interaction of electrons are calculated over a wide range of magnetic field and electron concentrations by means of the Bethe-ansatz formalism. The ground-state properties, including the total energy, the average spin (magnetization) and spin (magnetic) susceptibility are investigated for both signs of the interaction strength U/t. The critical behavior near the onset of magnetization and magnetic saturation are also analyzed. At the onset of magnetization and near the magnetic saturation the spin susceptibility χ diverges at all U/t for half-filling case n=1, whereas for n≠1 it is always finite. The reverse susceptibility χ-1(U) exhibits anomalous hump, which increases with h or n, and shows discontinuity as U/t→±0 at infinitesimal h→0. The analytical results for the ground-state properties in strong and weak interaction limits are in full agreement with our numerical calculations.

Gap in the spin excitations and magnetization curve of the one-dimensional attractive Hubbard model

Thomas B. Bahder, Ferenc Woynarovich

The magnetic properties of a Hubbard chain with on-site attraction are studied as a function of the band filling. Magnetization curves are calculated numerically for several values of the interaction and band filling. An unexpected feature of these curves is that the susceptibility is always finite except for the empty and half-filled band. The gap in the magnetic excitation spectrum is also calculated as a function of the band filling. The numerical results are compared with analytical results, which are obtained for the nearly empty and nearly-half-filled band.

Magnetization plateaus in frustrated antiferromagnetic quantum spin models

A. Honecker, J. Schulenburg, Johannes Richter

Plateaus can be observed in the zero-temperature magnetization curve of quantum spin systems at rational values of the magnetization. In one dimension, the appearance of a plateau is controlled by a quantization condition for the magnetization which involves the length of the local spin and the volume of a translational unit cell of the ground state. We discuss examples of geometrically frustrated quantum spin systems with large (in general unbounded) periodicities of spontaneous breaking of translational symmetry in the ground state. In two dimensions, we discuss the square, triangular and Kagomé lattices using exact diagonalization (ED) for up to N = 40 sites. For the spin-1/2 XXZ model on the triangular lattice we study the nature and stability region of a plateau at one third of the saturation magnetization. The Kagomé lattice gives rise to particularly rich behaviour with several plateaus in the magnetization curve and a jump due to local magnon excitations just below saturation.
