Abstract

A mechanism of a pinning of the quantized matter wave vortices by optical vortices in a specially arranged optical dipole traps is discussed. The vortex-antivortex optical arrays of rectangular symmetry are shown to transfer angular orbital momentum and form the “antiferromagnet”-like matter waves. The separable Hamiltonian for matter waves in pancake trapping geometry is proposed and 3D-wavefunction is factorized in a product of wavefunctions of the 1D harmonic oscillator and 2D vortex-antivortex quantum state. The 2D wavefunction’s phase gradient field associated via Madelung transform with the field of classical velocities forms labyrinth-like structure. The macroscopic quantum state composed of periodically spaced counter-rotating BEC superfluid vortices has zero angular momentum and nonzero rotational energy.

We discuss a possibility of a pinning of quantized matter wave vortices by optical vortices in specially arranged optical dipole traps. The vortex-antivortex optical arrays of rectangular symmetry are shown to transfer angular orbital momentum to support ldquoantiferromagnet-likerdquo matter waves. The separable Hamiltonian for matter waves is proposed which allows to factorize of the 3D -wavefunction exactly in a product of 1D - harmonic oscillatorpsilas ground state and 2D - vortex-antivortex wavefunction. The wavefunctionpsilas phase gradient field associated with the field of classical velocities via Madelung transformation forms labyrinth-like structure. The macroscopic wavefunction of periodically spaced BEC superfluid vortices appears to be less influenced by decoherence.

Vortex-antivortex macroscopic quantum state

A. Yu. Okulov, B. G. Sidharth, F. Honsell +3 more

The macroscopic quantum state of ultracold atoms in laser optical trap is considered. A confining optical field is built as spatially periodic array of optical vortices. The optical angular momentum transfer induces the rotational motion of ultracold ensemble. A quantum motion in such a labyrinth trap is analyzed in the framework of the Gross‐Pitaevsky equation.

Topologically trapped vortex molecules in Bose-Einstein condensates

Roeland Geurts, M. V. Miloševıć, François Maria Peeters

In a numerical experiment based on Gross-Pitaevskii formalism, we demonstrate unique topological quantum coherence in optically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). Exploring the fact that vortices in a rotating BEC can be pinned by a geometric arrangement of laser beams, we show the parameter range in which vortex-antivortex molecules or multiquantum vortices are formed as a consequence of the optically imposed symmetry. Being low-energy states, we discuss the conditions for spontaneous nucleation of these unique molecules and their direct experimental observation, and provoke the potential use of the phase print of an antivortex or a multiquantum vortex when realized in unconventional circumstances.

Interaction of atom with nonparaxial Laguerre-Gaussian beam: Forming superposition of vortex states in Bose-Einstein condensates

Anal Bhowmik, Pradip Kumar Mondal, Sonjoy Majumder +1 more

The exchange of orbital angular momentum (OAM) between paraxial optical vortex and a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of atomic gases is well known. In this paper, we develop a theory for the microscopic interaction between matter and an optical vortex beyond paraxial approximation. We show how superposition of vortex states of BEC can be created with a focused optical vortex. Since the polarization or spin angular momentum (SAM) of the optical field is coupled with OAM of the field, in this case, these angular momenta can be transferred to the internal electronic and external center-of-mass motion of atoms provided both the motions are coupled. We propose a scheme for producing the superposition of matter-wave vortices using Gaussian and a focused Laguerre-Gaussian beam. We study how two-photon Rabi frequencies of stimulated Raman transitions vary with focusing angles for different combinations of OAM and SAM of optical states. We demonstrate the formation of vortex-antivortex structure and discuss interference of three vortex states in a BEC.

Vortex patterns in moderately rotating Bose-condensed gas

Mohd. Imran, M A H Ahsan

Abstract Using exact diagonalization, we investigate the many-body ground state for regular vortex patterns in a rotating Bose-condensed gas of N spinless particles, confined in a quasi-two-dimensional harmonic trap and interacting repulsively via finite-range Gaussian potential. The N -body Hamiltonian matrix is diagonalized in given subspaces of quantized total angular momentum L z , to obtain the lowest-energy eigenstate. Further, the internal structure of these eigenstates is analyzed by calculating the corresponding conditional probability distribution. Specifically, the quantum mechanically stable as well as unstable states in a co-rotating frame are examined in the moderately rotating regime corresponding to angular momenta 4 N ≤ L z < 5 N for N = 16 bosons. In response to externally impressed rotation, the patterns of singly quantized vortices are formed, shaping into canonical polygons with a central vortex at the trap center. The internal structure of unstable states reveals the mechanism of entry, nucleation and pattern formation of vortices with structural phase transition, as the condensate goes from one stable vortical state to the other. The stable polygonal vortex patterns having discrete p -fold rotational symmetry with p = 5 and p = 6 are observed. The hexagonal vortex pattern with p = 6 symmetry is a precursor to the triangular vortex lattice of singly quantized vortices in the thermodynamic limit. For unstable states, quantum melting of vortex patterns due to uncertainty in positions of individual vortices, is also briefly discussed.
