Ground state fluctuations in rung-dimerised spin ladders

Abstract

Treating an exactly rung-dimerized spin ladder as a reference model we study perturbatively zero temperature quantum fluctuations in spin ladders with slightly destroyed rung-dimerization. Analytic expressions are obtained for the gas parameter (density of rung-triplets) and the ground state energy per rung. At a strong diagonal frustration as well as at a rather strong antiferromagnetic rung coupling these results well agree with the previous numerical calculations.

Dimerization and spin decoupling in a two-leg Heisenberg ladder with frustrated trimer rungs

Andreas Weichselbaum, Wei‐Guo Yin, Alexei M. Tsvelik

We study the antiferromagnetic spin-half Heisenberg ladder in the presence of an additional frustrating rung spin that is motivated and relevant also for the description of real two-dimensional materials such as the two-dimensional trimer magnet ${\mathrm{Ba}}_{4}{\mathrm{Ir}}_{3}{\mathrm{O}}_{10}$. We study the zero-temperature phase diagram, where we combine numerical and analytical methods into an overall consistent description. All numerical simulations are also accompanied by studies of the dynamical spin structure factor obtained via the density matrix renormalization group. Overall, we find in the regime of strong rung coupling a gapped dimerized phase related to competing symmetry sectors in Hilbert space that ultimately results in frustration-driven spin-Peierls transition. In the weak rung-coupling regime, the system is uniform yet shows a gapped spinon continuum together with a sharp coherent low-energy branch that renders the system critical overall. In either case, the additional rung spin quickly gets sidelined and nearly decouples once its bare coupling to the ladder drops somewhat below the direct Heisenberg coupling of the legs.

Three-magnon bound states in exactly rung-dimerized spin ladders

P. N. Bibikov

Three magnon bound states in all total spin sectors of general nonintegrable exactly rung-dimerized spin ladder are obtained by Bethe Ansatz. Basing on this result a dispersion law for $m$-magnon ($m>3$) bound states is conjectured. It is suggested that (depending on correlations between coupling constants) a behavior of the gas parameter (density of rung-triplets) on the boundary of the rung-dimerized phase may either be smooth or have a leap.

Phase diagram of the frustrated spin ladder

Toshiya Hikihara, Oleg A. Starykh

We revisit the phase diagram of the frustrated spin-1/2 ladder with two competing interchain antiferromagnetic exchanges, rung coupling ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ and diagonal coupling ${J}_{\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}}$. We suggest, based on the accurate renormalization-group analysis of the low-energy Hamiltonian of the ladder, that marginal interchain current-current interaction plays central role in destabilizing previously predicted intermediate columnar dimer phase in the vicinity of classical degeneracy line ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}=2{J}_{\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}}$. Following this insight we then suggest that changing these competing interchain exchanges from the previously considered antiferromagnetic to the ferromagnetic ones eliminates the issue of the marginal interactions altogether and dramatically expands the region of stability of the columnar dimer phase. This analytical prediction is convincingly confirmed by the numerical density-matrix renormalization-group and exact-diagonalization calculations as well as by the perturbative calculation in the strong rung-coupling limit. The phase diagram for ferromagnetic ${J}_{\ensuremath{\perp}}$ and ${J}_{\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}}$ is determined.

Dimerized ground states in spin−S frustrated systems

Carlos Alberto Lamas, J. M. Matera

We study a family of frustrated antiferromagnetic $\text{spin}\ensuremath{-}S$ systems with a fully dimerized ground state. Starting from the simplest case of the frustrated zigzag spin ladder, we generalize the family to more complex geometries like tetrahedral ladders and spin tubes. After presenting some numerical results about the phase diagram of these systems, we show that the ground state is robust against the inclusion of weak disorder in the couplings as well as several kinds of perturbations, allowing to study some other interesting models as a perturbative expansion of the exact one. A discussion on how to determine the dimerization region in terms of quantum information estimators is also presented. Finally, we explore the relation of these results with the case of a four-leg spin tube, which recently was proposed as a model for the description of the compound ${\mathrm{Cu}}_{2}{\mathrm{Cl}}_{4}{\mathrm{D}}_{8}{\mathrm{C}}_{4}{\mathrm{SO}}_{2}$, delimiting the region of the parameter space where this model presents dimerization in its ground state.

Quantum dimer phases in a frustrated spin ladder: Effective field theory approach and exact diagonalization

T. Vekua, A. Honecker

The phase diagram of a frustrated $S=1∕2$ antiferromagnetic spin ladder with additional next-nearest neighbor exchanges, both diagonal and in-chain, is studied by a weak-coupling effective field theory approach combined with exact diagonalization for finite systems. In addition to two known phases with rung-singlet and Haldane-type ground states, we observe two new phases with dimerization along the chains. Furthermore, the transitions between the different phases are studied and shown to be either first order or to belong to the universality class of the two-dimensional Ising model. The nature of elementary excitations is discussed briefly.
