Heating from continuous number density measurements in optical lattices

Yariv Yanay, Erich J. Mueller

We explore the effects of continuous number density measurement on atoms in an optical lattice. By integrating a master equation for quantum observables, we calculate how single-particle correlations decay. We consider weakly and strongly interacting bosons and noninteracting fermions. Even in the Mott regime, such measurements destroy correlations and increase the average energy, as long as some hopping is allowed. We explore the role of spatial resolution and find that the heating rate is proportional to the amount of information gained from such measurements.

Probing Nearest-Neighbor Correlations of Ultracold Fermions in an Optical Lattice

Daniel Greif, Leticia Tarruell, Thomas Uehlinger +2 more

We demonstrate a probe for nearest-neighbor correlations of fermionic quantum gases in optical lattices. It gives access to spin and density configurations of adjacent sites and relies on creating additional doubly occupied sites by perturbative lattice modulation. The measured correlations for different lattice temperatures are in good agreement with an ab initio calculation without any fitting parameters. This probe opens new prospects for studying the approach to magnetically ordered phases.

Density–Density Correlation Spectra of Ultracold Bosonic Gas Released from a Deep 1D Optical Lattice

Yunzhi Tan, Qiang Zhu, Bing Wang +3 more

Density-density correlation analysis is a convenient diagnostic tool to reveal the hidden order in the strongly correlated phases of ultracold atoms. We report on a study of the density-density correlations of ultracold bosonic atoms which were initially prepared in a Mott insulator (MI) state in one-dimensional optical lattices. For the atomic gases released from the deep optical lattice, we extracted the normalized density-density correlation function from the atomic density distributions of freely expanded atomic clouds. Periodic bunching peaks were observed in the density-density correlation spectra, as in the case of higher-dimensional lattices. Treating the bosonic gas within each lattice well as a subcondensate without quantum tunneling, we simulated the post-expansion density distribution along the direction of the 1D lattice, and the calculated density-density correlation spectra agreed with our experimental observations.
