Abstract

We investigate theoretically two-photon processes in a microcavity containing one quantum dot in the strong-coupling regime. The cavity mode can be tuned to resonantly drive the two-photon transition between the ground and the biexciton states while the exciton states are far-off resonance due to the biexciton binding energy. We study the steady state of the quantum dot and cavity field in presence of a continuous incoherent pumping. We identify the regime where the system acts as two-photon emitter and discuss the feasibility and performance of realistic single quantum-dot devices for two-photon lasing.

Highly efficient two-photon generation from a coherently pumped quantum dot embedded in a microcavity

Jitendra K. Verma, Pradyumna K. Pathak

We propose two schemes to realize a highly efficient solid-state source of photon pairs using four-wave mixing and stimulated Raman adiabatic passage in a single quantum dot embedded in a microcavity. A resonant continuous-wave laser applied between biexciton and exciton states and a pulsed laser applied between a ground state and exciton state are utilized to facilitate coherent pumping. We show in the case of four-wave mixing that, although the probability of generating two photons in a cavity mode is small without cavity damping, two-photon-resonant emission is enhanced by cavity damping within the strong-coupling regime. For strong continuous-wave laser, a single photon from a pulsed laser and two-photon-resonant transition through a strongly coupled cavity mode lead to a (1+2)-type Raman transition through the generated Autler-Townes doublet. We also discuss the spectrum of the generated photon pair and the photon-photon correlations in the generated photon pair.

Entanglement and lasing with two quantum dots in a microcavity

Elena del Valle, Fabrice P. Laussy, Filippo Troiani +1 more

Entanglement and lasing of two quantum dots in a microcavity are investigated in the steady state achieved under a continuous incoherent pumping. Lasing is favored in the case of independent pumping of the dots, i.e., when an electron-hole pair which reaches one dot does not affect the other. In this case, having two dots allows a qualitative enhancement of the lasing emission as compared to the single dot case. On the other hand, when the two dots share the excitation bath, giving rise to a quantum uncertainty of the final state of the excitation, entanglement properties are enhanced in detriment of the photon emission. Slightly different couplings between the dots and the cavity induce good singlet-state population. This allows good entanglement in a system pumped continuously and incoherently.

Correlated photon-pair emission from pumped-pulsed quantum dots embedded in a microcavity

Perea, J. I., Filippo Troiani, C. Tejedor

We theoretically investigate the optical response of a quantum dot, embedded in a microcavity and incoherently excited by pulsed pumping. The exciton and biexciton transition are off-resonantly coupled with the left- and right-polarized mode of the cavity, while the two-photon resonance condition is fulfilled. Rich behaviours are shown to occur in the time dependence of the second-order correlation functions which refer to counter-polarized photons. The corresponding time-averaged quantities, which are accessible to experiments, confirm that such a dot-cavity system behaves as a good emitter of single, polarization-correlated photon pairs.

Photon Antibunching from a Single Quantum-Dot-Microcavity System in the Strong Coupling Regime

David Press, Stephan Götzinger, Stephan Reitzenstein +5 more

We observe antibunching in the photons emitted from a strongly coupled single quantum dot and pillar microcavity in resonance. When the quantum dot was spectrally detuned from the cavity mode, the cavity emission remained antibunched, and also anticorrelated from the quantum dot emission. Resonant pumping of the selected quantum dot via an excited state enabled these observations by eliminating the background emitters that are usually coupled to the cavity. This device demonstrates an on-demand single-photon source operating in the strong coupling regime, with a Purcell factor of 61+/-7 and quantum efficiency of 97%.

Generation of a two-photon state from a quantum dot in a microcavity

Elena del Valle, Alejandro González-Tudela, E. Cancellieri +2 more

We propose and characterize a two-photon (2P) source that emits in a highly polarized, monochromatic and directional beam, realized by means of a quantum dot embedded in a linearly polarized cavity. In our scheme, the cavity frequency is tuned to half the frequency of the biexciton (two excitons with opposite spins) and largely detuned from the excitons thanks to the large biexciton binding energy. We show how the emission can be Purcell enhanced by several orders of magnitude into the 2P channel for available experimental systems.

Cooperative two-photon lasing in two quantum dots embedded inside a photonic microcavity

Lavakumar Addepalli, Pradyumna K. Pathak

We propose cooperative two-photon lasing in two quantum dots coupled to a single-mode photonic crystal cavity. We consider both quantum dots are driven either incoherently or coherently using an external pump. We incorporate exciton-phonon coupling using polaron transformed master equation. Using quantum laser theory, single- and multiphoton excess emission rates (difference between emission and absorption) into cavity mode are investigated. The single- and two-photon excess emission rates contribute to cavity photons, predominantly. Varying the pump strength can lead to single-photon excess emission rate change from negative to positive, and thus, by appropriately selecting pump strength, single-photon excess emission rate can be made negligible.
