Damping and decoherence of a nanomechanical resonator due to a few two-level systems

Abstract

We consider a quantum model of a nanomechanical flexing beam resonator interacting with a bath comprising a few damped tunneling two-level systems. In contrast with a resonator interacting bilinearly with an ohmic free oscillator bath (modeling clamping loss, for example), the mechanical resonator damping is amplitude dependent, while the decoherence of quantum superpositions of mechanical position states depends only weakly on their spatial separation.

Damping and decoherence of Fock states in a nanomechanical resonator due to two-level systems

Laura G. Remus, M. P. Blencowe

We numerically investigate the decay of initial quantum Fock states and their superpositions for a mechanical resonator mode coupled to an environment comprising interacting, damped tunneling two-level system (TLS) defects. The cases of one, three, and six near-resonant, interacting TLS's are considered in turn, and it is found that, with even as few as three TLS's, the resonator's quantum decay behavior is indistinguishable from that due to coupling to an Ohmic oscillator bath.

Generation of the superposition of mesoscopic states of a nanomechanical resonator by a single two-level system

Manoj Das, Jitendra K. Verma, Pradyumna K. Pathak

We propose measurement-based conditional generation of the superposition of mesoscopic states of a nanomechanical resonator. We consider a two-level quantum mechanical system (qubit) coupled with a nanomechanical resonator through phonon exchange. An interaction, which produces shifts in the state of the nanomechanical resonator depending on the state of the qubit, is realized by driving the qubit through two resonant fields or a single field with controlled phase. The measurement of the state of the qubit produces superposition states of the nanomechanical resonator. We show that the quantum interference between the generated states in the superposition may lead to an arbitrary large displacement in the resonator. We also discuss decoherence of the generated states using the Wigner function.

Nonlinear response of a driven vibrating nanobeam in the quantum regime

Vittorio Peano, Michael Thorwart

We analytically investigate the nonlinear response of a damped doubly clamped nanomechanical beam under static longitudinal compression which is excited to transverse vibrations. Starting from a continuous elasticity model for the beam, we consider the dynamics of the beam close to the Euler buckling instability. There, the fundamental transverse mode dominates and a quantum mechanical time-dependent effective single-particle Hamiltonian for its amplitude can be derived. In addition, we include the influence of a dissipative Ohmic or super-Ohmic environment. In the rotating frame, a Markovian master equation is derived which includes also the effect of the time-dependent driving in a non-trivial way. The quasi-energies of the pure system show multiple avoided level crossings corresponding to multiphonon transitions in the resonator. Around the resonances, the master equation is solved analytically using Van Vleck perturbation theory. Their lineshapes are calculated resulting in simple expressions. We find the general solution for the multiple multiphonon resonances and, most interestingly, a bath-induced transition from a resonant to an antiresonant behaviour of the nonlinear response.

Macroscopic quantum effects in a strongly driven nanomechanical resonator

Vittorio Peano, Michael Thorwart

We investigate the nonlinear response of a vibrating suspended nanomechanical beam on external periodic driving. The amplitude of the fundamental transverse mode behaves like a weakly damped quantum particle in a driven anharmonic potential. Upon using a Born-Markovian master equation, we calculate the fundamental mode amplitude for varying driving frequencies. In the nonlinear regime, we observe resonances which are absent in the corresponding classical model. They are shown to be associated with resonant multiphonon excitations. Furthermore, we identify resonant tunneling in a dynamically induced bistable effective potential.

Decoherent many-body dynamics of a nano- mechanical resonator coupled to charge qubits

Mahmoud Abdel‐Aty, Jonas Larson, Hichem Eleuch

The dynamics of charge qubits coupled to a nanomechanical resonator under influence of both a phonon bath in contact with the resonator and irreversible decay of the qubits is considered. The focus of our analysis is devoted to multi partite entanglement and the effects arising from the coupling to the reservoir. It is shown that despite losses, entanglement formation may still persist for relatively long times and it is especially robust against temperature dependence of the reservoir. Together with control of system parameters, the system may therefore be especially suited for quantum information processing. Furthermore, our results shed light on the evolution of open quantum many-body systems. For instance, due to intrinsic qubit-qubit couplings our model is related to a driven XY spin model.
