Abstract

We derive an exact analytical solution to the time-dependent Schrödinger equation for transmission of a Gaussian wave packet through an arbitrary potential of finite range. We consider the situation where the initial Gaussian wave packet is sufficiently broad in momentum space to guarantee that the resonance structure of the system is included in the dynamical description. We demonstrate that the transmitted wave packet exhibits a transient behavior which at very large distances and long times may be written as the free evolving Gaussian wave packet solution times the transmission amplitude of the system and hence it reproduces the resonance spectra of the system. This is a novel result that predicts the ultimate fate of the transmitted Gaussian wave packet. We also prove that at a fixed distance and very long times the solution goes as $t^{-3/2}$ which extends to arbitrary finite range potentials previous analysis on this issue. Our results are exemplified for single and multibarrier systems.

Transient Effects in Time-Dependent Tunneling

G. Garca-Caldern

An exact analytic solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation with cutoff wave initial conditions, that goes into the stationary solution at asymptotically long times, is used to investigate the transient behavior in the time evolution of the probability density along the internal and transmitted regions of a potential barrier. The approach involves the complex poles and residues (resonant states) of the outgoing Green's function of the problem. The solution exhibits absence of propagation along the classically forbidden internal region of the potential, and along the transmitted region it splits into two propagating structures. One of them is a transient effect describing the earliest response of the system to the initial condition whereas the other structure evolves towards the stationary solution.

Tunneling and delay time of cutoff Gaussian wave packets

Jorge Villavicencio, Roberto Romo, Elmer Cruz

A formal analytic solution of the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation is obtained for cutoff Gaussian wavepackets incident on finite range potentials of arbitrary shape. We derive closed analytical expressions for transmitted wavepackets with a small cutoff and the solutions are applied to investigate the dynamics of wavepacket tunneling. We showed that the analytic solutions satisfy a useful rescaling property that was applied to study and characterize the delay time in delta potential barriers.

Analytic time-dependent solutions of the one-dimensional Schrödinger equation

W. van Dijk, F. Masafumi Toyama, Sjirk Jan Prins +1 more

We show that one can obtain analytic solutions of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation that are more complex than the well-known oscillating coherent wave packet. Such Hermite-Gaussian or initially square wave packets exist for a free particle or for one subject to the harmonic oscillator potential. In either case, the Hermite-Gaussian packets retain their nodal structure even after long times. There is a single class of exact solutions for the system with oscillator constant K > 0, K = 0, or K < 0, leading to wave functions for the harmonic oscillator, the free particle, and the inverted oscillator, respectively.

Dynamics of Wave Packets Generated at a Finite Distance from a Scattering Step

F. Carone Fabiani, Dario Narducci, G. F. Cerofolini

The scattering process of wave packets is often described recovering the simple monochromatic scheme supposing that the particle comes from −∞ with a sharp momentum distribution, thus allowing for approximations usually used in common calculations of physical quantities involved in the process. In this work, we study the scattering process of a Gaussian wave packet impinging on the step potential, finding out that its dynamics depends on the initial conditions of the incident particle, and in particular on the wave packet origin x0. We propose a semi-classical approximated model to describe the dynamics of the scattering wave packet, also defining a characteristic time interval tf as the time required for the formation of transmitted packet beyond the step. Through a comparison with the numerical solution of the SchrÖdinger equation, our model explains the tf as a function of the origin x0 and spread of the incident wave packet in coordinate space, giving rise to such dependence for a finite distance scattering processes.

Bound-state-induced persistent oscillations in the transient behavior of the probability density for the attractive δ potential

Luis Guillermo Mendoza‐Luna, Gastón García‐Calderón

An exact analytical solution to the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation for an attractive $\ensuremath{\delta}$ potential using cutoff plane-wave initial conditions is derived to investigate the effect of a bound state on the transmission transients. We find that at short distances from the potential the probability density behaves harmonically at all times. This unexpected behavior, which corresponds to the trapping of a fraction of the transmitted wave, decreases exponentially with distance, so that at large distances the solution goes into the stationary solution. We find also that this behavior has no effect on the phase time.

QUANTUM DYNAMICS OF WAVE PACKET IN HARMONIC POTENTIAL

Zhan-Ning Hu, Chang Sub Kim

In this paper, the analytic solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation is obtained for the wave packet in two-dimensional oscillator potential. The quantum dynamics of the wave packet is investigated based on this analytic solution. To our knowledge, this is the first time we solve, analytically and exactly this kind of time-dependent Schrödinger equation in a two-dimensional system, in which the Gaussian parameters satisfy the coupled nonlinear differential equations. The coherent states and their rotations of the system are discussed in detail. We find also that this analytic solution includes four kinds of modes of the evolutions for the wave packets: rigid, rotational, vibrational states and a combination of the rotation and vibration without spreading.
