Abstract

We show that the quantum disentanglement eraser implemented on a two-photon system from parametric downconversion is a general method to create hybrid photonic entanglement, namely the entanglement between different degrees of freedom of the photon pair. To demonstrate this, we generate and characterize a source with tunable degree of hybrid entanglement between two qubits, one encoded in the transverse momentum and position of a photon, and the other in the polarization of its partner. In addition, we show that a simple extension of our setup enables the generation of two-photon qubit-qudit hybrid entangled states. Finally, we discuss the advantages that this type of entanglement can bring for an optical quantum network.

Hybrid entanglement and a non-local quantum eraser

Xiao‐Song Ma, A. Qarry, Johannes Kofler +2 more

We demonstrate for the first time hybrid entanglement of photon pairs generated via the experimental violation of a Bell inequality with two different degrees of freedom (DOF), namely the path/linear momentum of one photon and the polarization of the other photon. Polarization entangled photon pairs are created by Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion. Then, a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer is used to convert the polarization DOF of one photon to a path DOF. For that photon, path superposition is analyzed and polarization superposition for its twin photon.

Generation of hybrid polarization-orbital angular momentum entangled states

Eleonora Nagali, Fabio Sciarrino

Hybrid entangled states exhibit entanglement between different degrees of freedom of a particle pair and thus could be useful for asymmetric optical quantum network where the communication channels are characterized by different properties. We report the first experimental realization of hybrid polarization-orbital angular momentum (OAM) entangled states by adopting a spontaneous parametric down conversion source of polarization entangled states and a polarization-OAM transferrer. The generated quantum states have been characterized through quantum state tomography. Finally, the violation of Bell's inequalities with the hybrid two photon system has been observed.

Hybrid entanglement photon pair source for fiber-space flexible QKD network

Mikio Fujiwara, Morio Toyoshima, Masahide Sasaki +3 more

We report on the experimental demonstration of a source of hybrid entanglement pairs between two different degrees of freedom, a 1550 nm time-bin qubit and an 810 nm polarization qubit. The hybrid entanglement source is constructed of a non-degenerate photon pair source and a format transformer from time encoding to polarization encoding. This entanglement photon source will provide a fiber- space flexible QKD system.

Single-photon correlations for secure communication

Maria Tengner, Daniel Ljunggren, Sébastien Sauge +2 more

We present two types of photon sources designed for secure quantum communication, e.g. for quantum cryptography. Both types are based on the creation of photon pairs by spontaneous parametric downconversion in nonlinear crystals. The first is a heralded single photon source and the second is a source of polarization-entangled photon pairs. For the heralded single photon source the detection of one of the photons of a downconversion pair is used as a trigger to announce the presence of the other: the single photon. The source is characterized by a highly sub-Poisson photon number statistics making it very suitable for use in quantum cryptography protocols using single photonic qubits to create correlated information between a sender and a receiver. The entanglement source instead uses the inherent non-classical correlations between entangled qubits. We also present a hybrid-encoding where the sender uses polarization to encode information while the receiver uses time-bins. Both sources create photons with highly non-degenerate wavelengths of 810 nm and 1550 nm, taking advantage of the efficient detectors at near-infrared and the low transmission loss of optical fibers at telecommunication wavelengths.

Metasurface-enabled quantum holograms with hybrid entanglement

Hong Liang, Wai Chun Wong, Tailin An +1 more

Metasurfaces, with their capability to control all possible dimensions of light, have become integral to quantum optical applications, including quantum state generation, operation, and tomography. We utilize a metasurface to generate polarization–hologram hybrid entanglement between a signal–idler photon pair to construct a quantum hologram. The properties of the quantum hologram can be revealed by collapsing the polarization degree of freedom of the idler photon, inducing interference between two holographic states of the signal photon as a meaningful and selective erasure of the holographic content. On the contrary, interference disappears when the idler photon is detected without observing polarization. This process can be further interpreted as a quantum holographic eraser, where the erasing action is visualized with erased contents in holograms. Our construction of a polarization–hologram hybrid entangled state with metasurfaces will be useful for quantum communication with enhanced robustness, anticounterfeiting applications through the additional quantum degrees of freedom or phase difference between two holographic states, and as an emerging platform for exploring fundamental quantum concepts for entanglement and nonlocality.

A photonic quantum interface for hybrid quantum network

Jian Wang, Yun‐Feng Huang, Chao Zhang +7 more

The hybrid quantum network, a universal form of quantum network which is aimed for quantum communication and distributed quantum computation, is that the quantum nodes in it are realized with different physical systems. This universal form of quantum network can combine the advantages and avoid the inherent defects of the different physical system. However, one obstacle standing in the way is the compatible photonic quantum interface. One possible solution is using non-degenerate, narrow-band, entangled photon pairs as the photonic interface. Here, for the first time, we generate nondegenrate narrow-band polarization-entangled photon pairs in cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion process. The bandwidths and central wavelengths of the signal and idler photons are 9 MHz at 935 nm and 9.5 MHz at 880 nm, which are compatible with trapped ion system and solid-state quantum memory system. The entanglement of the photon source is certified by quantum state tomography, showing a fidelity of 89.6% between the generated quantum state with a Bell state. Besides, a strong violation against Bell inequality with 2.36+/-0.03 further confirms the entanglement property of the photon pairs. Our method is suitable for the hybrid quantum network and will take a big step in this field.
