Equivalence of transport coefficients in bath-induced and dynamical scenarios

Abstract

We investigate the transport of a single excitation through a chain of weakly coupled subunits. At both ends the chain is exposed to baths which are incorporated by means of a master equation in Lindblad form. This master equation is solved by the use of stochastic unraveling in order to obtain excitation profile and current in the steady state. Completely diffusive transport is found for a range of model parameters, whereas signatures of ballistic behavior are observed outside this range. In the diffusive regime the conductivity is rather independent of the strength of the bath coupling and quantitatively agrees with the diffusion coefficient which has been derived from an investigation of the same model without baths. Also the ballistic behavior in the non-diffusive regime is in accord with results from this alternative approach.

Real-time broadening of bath-induced density profiles from closed-system correlation functions

The Lindblad master equation is one of the main approaches to open quantum systems. While it has been widely applied in the context of condensed matter systems to study properties of steady states in the limit of long times, the actual route to such steady states has attracted less attention yet. Here, we investigate the nonequilibrium dynamics of spin chains with a local coupling to a single Lindblad bath and analyze the transport properties of the induced magnetization. Combining typicality and equilibration arguments with stochastic unraveling, we unveil for the case of weak driving that the dynamics in the open system can be constructed on the basis of correlation functions in the closed system, which establishes a connection between the Lindblad approach and linear response theory at finite times. In this way, we provide a particular example where closed and open approaches to quantum transport agree strictly. We demonstrate this fact numerically for the spin-1/2 XXZ chain at the isotropic point and in the easy-axis regime, where superdiffusive and diffusive scaling is observed, respectively.

Transition from Diffusive to Ballistic Dynamics for a Class of Finite Quantum Models

Robin Steinigeweg, Heinz‐Peter Breuer, Jochen Gemmer B

The transport of excitation probabilities amongst weakly coupled subunits is investigated for a class of finite quantum systems. It is demonstrated that the dynamical behavior of the transported quantity depends on the considered length scale; e.g., the introduced distinction between diffusive and ballistic transport appears to be a scale-dependent concept, especially since a transition from diffusive to ballistic behavior is found in the limit of small as well as in the limit of large length scales. All these results are derived by an application of the time-convolutionless projection operator technique and are verified by the numerical solution of the full time-dependent Schrödinger equation which is obtained by exact diagonalization for a range of model parameters.

Exact solution for a diffusive nonequilibrium steady state of an open quantum chain

Marko Žnidarič

We calculate a nonequilibrium steady state of a quantum XX chain in the presence of dephasing and driving due to baths at chain ends. The obtained state is exact in the limit of weak driving while the expressions for one- and two-point correlations are exact for an arbitrary driving strength. In the steady state the magnetization profile and the spin current display diffusive behavior. The spin–spin correlation function, on the other hand, has long-range correlations which, though, decay to zero in either the thermodynamical limit or for equilibrium driving. At zero dephasing a nonequilibrium phase transition occurs from a ballistic transport having short-range correlations to a diffusive transport with long-range correlations.

Transport in open spin chains: A Monte Carlo wave-function approach

Mathias Michel A, Ortwin G. Hess, Hannu Christian Wichterich +1 more

We investigate energy transport in several two-level atom or spin-$1∕2$ models by a direct coupling to heat baths of different temperatures. The analysis is carried out on the basis of a recently derived quantum master equation which describes the nonequilibrium properties of internally weakly coupled systems appropriately. For the computation of the stationary state of the dynamical equations, we employ a Monte Carlo wave-function approach. The analysis directly indicates normal diffusive or ballistic transport in finite models and hints toward an extrapolation of the transport behavior of infinite models.

Heat transport in the X X Z spin chain: from ballistic to diffusive regimes and dephasing enhancement

Juan José Mendoza-Arenas, Sarah Al-Assam, Stephen R. L. Clark +1 more

In this work we study the heat transport in an XXZ spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain with homogeneous magnetic field, incoherently driven out of equilibrium by reservoirs at the boundaries. We focus on the effect of bulk dephasing (energy-dissipative) processes in different parameter regimes of the system. The non-equilibrium steady state of the chain is obtained by simulating its evolution under the corresponding Lindblad master equation, using the time evolving block decimation method. In the absence of dephasing, the heat transport is ballistic for weak interactions, while being diffusive in the strongly-interacting regime, as evidenced by the heat-current scaling with the system size. When bulk dephasing takes place in the system, diffusive transport is induced in the weakly-interacting regime, with the heat current monotonically decreasing with the dephasing rate. In contrast, in the strongly-interacting regime, the heat current can be significantly enhanced by dephasing for systems of small size.

Modeling heat transport through completely positive maps

Hannu Christian Wichterich, Markus J. Henrich, Heinz‐Peter Breuer +2 more

We investigate heat transport in a spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain, coupled locally to independent thermal baths of different temperature. The analysis is carried out within the framework of the theory of open systems by means of appropriate quantum master equations. The standard microscopic derivation of the weak-coupling Lindblad equation in the secular approximation is considered, and shown to be inadequate for the description of stationary nonequilibrium properties like a nonvanishing energy current. Furthermore, we derive an alternative master equation that is capable of describing a stationary energy current and, at the same time, leads to a completely positive dynamical map. This paves the way for efficient numerical investigations of heat transport in larger systems based on Monte Carlo wave function techniques.
