On the Minimum Distance of Non Binary LDPC Codes

Abstract

Minimum distance is an important parameter of a linear error correcting code. For improved performance of binary Low Density Parity Check (LDPC) codes, we need to have the minimum distance grow fast with n, the codelength. However, the best we can hope for is a linear growth in dmin with n. For binary LDPC codes, the necessary and sufficient conditions on the LDPC ensemble parameters, to ensure linear growth of minimum distance is well established. In the case of non-binary LDPC codes, the structure of logarithmic weight codewords is different from that of binary codes. We have carried out a preliminary study on the logarithmic bound on the the minimum distance of non-binary LDPC code ensembles. In particular, we have investigated certain configurations which would lead to low weight codewords. A set of simulations are performed to identify some of these configurations. Finally, we have provided a bound on the logarithmic minimum distance of nonbinary codes, using a strategy similar to the girth bound for binary codes. This bound has the same asymptotic behaviour as that of binary codes.

Computing the Minimum Distance of Nonbinary LDPC Codes

Lei Liu, Jie Huang, Wuyang Zhou +1 more

Finding the minimum distance of low-density-parity-check (LDPC) codes is an NP-hard problem. Different from all existing works that focus on binary LDPC codes, we in this paper aim to compute the minimum distance of nonbinary LDPC codes, motivated by the fact that operating in a large Galois field provides one important degree of freedom to achieve both good waterfall and error-floor performance. Our method is based on the existing nearest nonzero codeword search (NNCS) method, but several modifications are incorporated for nonbinary LDPC codes, including the modified error impulse pattern, the dithering method, and the nonbinary decoder. Numerical results on the estimated minimum distances show that a code's minimum distance can be increased by careful selection of nonzero elements of the parity check matrix, or by increasing the mean column weight, or by increasing the size of the Galois field. These results support observations that have been made based on simulated performance in the literature. Finally, we provide an upper bound on the minimum distance for nonbinary quasi-cyclic LDPC codes.

Weight distribution of non-binary LDPC codes

Weight distributions of binary low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes are well studied. We investigate the average distributions of symbol and binary weight for non-binary LDPC code ensemble. We derive the asymptotic growth rate and its linear approximation for small weight. Moreover, we show the typical minimum distance does not monotonically increase with the size of the field where the codes are defined.

Weight Distribution for Non-binary Cluster LDPC Code Ensemble

This paper derives the average symbol and bit weight distributions for the irregular non-binary cluster low-density parity-check (LDPC) code ensembles. Moreover, we give the exponential growth rates of the average weight distributions in the limit of large code length. We show the condition that the typical minimum distances linearly grow with the code length.

Linear growing minimum distance of ultra-sparse non-binary cluster-LDPC codes

Valentin Savin, David Declercq

In this paper, we study the asymptotic minimum distance of non-binary cluster-LDPC codes whose subjacent binary parity-check matrix is composed of localized density of ones, concentrated in clusters of bits. A particular attention is given to cluster codes represented by ultra-sparse bipartite graphs, in the sense that each symbol-node is connected to exactly dv= 2 constraint-nodes. We derive a lower bound on the minimum distance of non-binary cluster-LDPC codes and we show that there exist ensembles of ultra-sparse codes whose minimum distance grows linearly with the code length (with probability going to 1 as the code length goes to infinity). This result is in contrast with “classical” non-binary LDPC codes based on graphs with strictly regular dv= 2 symbol-nodes, whose minimum distance grows at most logarithmically with the code length. We also show that one can build practical non-binary cluster-LDPC codes with various finite codeword lengths, whose minimum distance is close to the Gilbert-Varshamov bound.

Tight Lower and Upper Bounds on the Minimum Distance of LDPC Codes

Yoones Hashemi, Amir H. Banihashemi

In this letter, we obtain lower and upper bounds on the minimum distance dminof low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes. The bounds are derived by categorizing the non-zero code words of an LDPC code into two categories of elementary and non-elementary. The first category contains code words whose induced subgraph has only degree-2 check nodes. We propose an efficient search algorithm that can find the elementary code words of an LDPC code with weight less than a certain value amax, exhaustively. We also derive a lower bound Lneon the weight of non-elementary code words. By performing the search with amax= Lne, we either obtain an elementary code word with the smallest weight dmin, or establish the lower bound of Lneon dmin. For the upper bound, we modify our search algorithm to reach elementary codewords of larger weights at the cost of being non-exhaustive. Once such a codeword is found, its weight acts as an upper bound on dmin. We examine a large number of regular and irregular LDPC codes, and demonstrate the efficiency and versatility of our technique in finding lower and upper bounds on, and in many cases the exact value of, dmin. Finding dmin, or establishing search-based lower or upper bounds, for many of the examined codes are out of the reach of any existing algorithm.
