Abstract

We analyze the quantum phase transition between a semimetal and a superfluid in a model of attractively interacting fermions with a linear dispersion. The quantum critical properties of this model cannot be treated by the Hertz-Millis approach since integrating out the fermions leads to a singular Landau-Ginzburg order parameter functional. We therefore derive and solve coupled renormalization-group equations for the fermionic degrees of freedom and the bosonic order parameter fluctuations. In two spatial dimensions, fermions and bosons acquire anomalous scaling dimensions at the quantum critical point, associated with non-Fermi-liquid behavior and non-Gaussian order parameter fluctuations.

Renormalization group theory for fermions and order parameter fluctuations in interacting Fermi systems

Philipp Strack

In this thesis, we perform a comprehensive renormalization group analysis of two- and three-dimensional Fermi systems at low and zero temperature. We examine systems with spontaneous symmetry-breaking and quantum critical behavior by deriving and solving flow equations within the functional renormalization group framework. We extend the Hertz-Millis theory of quantum phase transitions in itinerant fermion systems to phases with discrete and continuous symmetry-breaking, and to quantum critical points where the zero temperature theory is associated with a non-Gaussian fixed point. We compute the finite temperature phase boundary near the quantum critical point explicitly including non-Gaussian fluctuations. We then set up a coupled fermion-boson renormalization group theory that captures the mutual interplay of gapless fermions with massless order parameter fluctuations when approaching a quantum critical point. As a first application, we compute the complete set of quantum critical exponents at the semimetal-to-superfluid quantum phase transition of attractively interacting Dirac fermions in two dimensions. Both, the order parameter propagator and the fermion propagator become non-analytic functions of momenta destroying the Fermi liquid behavior. We finally compute the effects of quantum fluctuations in the superfluid ground state of an attractively interacting Fermi system, employing the attractive Hubbard model as a prototype. The flow equations capture the influence of longitudinal and Goldstone order parameter fluctuations on non-universal quantities such as the fermionic gap and the fermion-boson vertex, as well as the exact universal infrared asymptotics present in every fermionic superfluid.

Anomalous criticality near semimetal‐to‐superfluid quantum phase transition in a two‐dimensional Dirac cone model

B. Obert, S. Takei, W. Metzner

Abstract We analyze the scaling behavior at and near a quantum critical point separating a semimetallic from a superfluid phase. To this end we compute the renormalization group flow for a model of attractively interacting electrons with a linear dispersion around a single Dirac point. We study both ground state and finite temperature properties. In two dimensions, the electrons and the order parameter fluctuations exhibit power‐law scaling with anomalous scaling dimensions. The quasi‐particle weight and the Fermi velocity vanish at the quantum critical point. The order parameter correlation length turns out to be infinite everywhere in the semimetallic ground state.

Renormalization group theory for fermions and order parameter fluctuations in interacting Fermi systems

Philipp Strack

The physics of interacting Fermi systems is extremely sensitive to the energy scale. Of particular interest is the low energy regime where correlation induced collective behavior emerges. The theory of interacting Fermi systems is confronted with the occurrence of very different phenomena along a continuum of scales calling for methods capable of computing physical observables as a function of energy scale. In this thesis, we perform a comprehensive renormalization group analysis of two and three-dimensional Fermi systems at low and zero temperature. We examine systems with spontaneous symmetry-breaking and quantum critical behavior by deriving and solving flow equations within the functional renormalization group framework. We extend the Hertz-Millis theory of quantumphase transitions in itinerant fermion systems to phases with discrete and continuous symmetry-breaking, and to quantum critical points where the zero temperature theory is associated with a non-Gaussian fixed point. The order parameter is implemented by a bosonic Hubbard-Stratonovich field, which - for continuous symmetry-breaking - splits into two components corresponding to longitudinal and transversal Goldstone fluctuations. Renormalization group analysis of order parameter fluctuations in fermionic superfluids

Benjamin Obert

In this work fluctuation effects in two interacting fermion systems exhibiting fermionic s-wave superfluidity are analyzed with a modern renormalization group method. A description in terms of a fermion-boson theory allows an investigation of order parameter fluctuations already on the one-loop level. In the first project a quantum phase transition between a semimetal and a s-wave superfluid in a Dirac cone model is studied. The interplay between fermions and quantum critical fluctuations close to and at the quantum critical point at zero and finite temperatures are studied within a coupled fermion-boson theory. At the quantum critical point non-Fermi liquid and non-Gaussian behaviour emerge. Close to criticality several quantities as the susceptibility show a power law behaviour with critical exponents. We find an infinite correlation length in the entire semimetallic ground state also away from the quantum critical point. In the second project, the ground state of an s-wave fermionic superfluid is investigated. Here, the mutual interplay between fermions and order parameter fluctuations is studied, especially the impact of massless Goldstone fluctuations, which occur due to spontaneous breaking of the continuous U(1)-symmetry. Fermionic gap and bosonic order parameter are distinguished. Furthermore, the bosonic order parameter is decomposed in transverse and longitudinal fluctuations. The mixing between transverse and longitudinal fluctuations is included in our description. Within a simple truncation of the fermion-boson RG flow, we describe the fermion-boson theory for the first time in a consistent manner. Several singularities appear due the Goldstone fluctuations, which partially cancel due to symmetry. Our RG flow captures the correct infrared asymptotics of the system, where the collective excitations act as an interacting Bose gas. Lowest order Ward identities and the massless Goldstone mode are fulfilled in our truncation.

Quantum criticality and non-Fermi liquids: The Wilsonian renormalization group perspective

Anonymous, Paweł Jakubczyk, Hiroyuki Yamase

We develop a theoretical framework based on the nonperturvative renormalization group (RG) in the one-particle irreducible (Wetterich) formulation to tackle the interplay of coupled fermionic and order-parameter fluctuations at metallic quantum critical points (QCPs) with ordering wavevector $\vec{Q}=\vec{0}$. We consistently treat the dynamical emergence of the Landau damping of the bosonic mode and non-Fermi liquid scaling of fermions upon lowering the cutoff scale. The loop integrals of the present theory involve only contributions from fluctuations above the cutoff scale, which protects the system from developing singular bosonic interactions. We emphasize the importance of the nontrivial relative scaling of the bosonic and fermionic cutoffs $Λ$ and $Λ_f$, which we fix by analyzing the RG flow of the scale-dependent ordering wave-vector $\vec{Q}_Λ$. Upon neglecting Fermi self-energy in the loop integrals of the functional RG flow, we identify a non-Fermi liquid RG fixed point and recover the features obtained earlier within RPA-type approaches. In a subsequent step, we self-consistently include the scaling of the self-energy and the Yukawa coupling. We find a generic instability of the non-Fermi liquid RG fixed point. This implies, at least at this truncation level, absence of the QCP with $\vec{Q}=\vec{0}$ and development of a first-order phase transition or a phase characterized by $\vec{Q}\neq\vec{0}$.

Non-Fermi-liquid fixed points and anomalous Landau damping in a quantum critical metal

M. Trott, C. Hooley

We present a functional renormalization-group calculation of the properties of a quantum critical metal in $d=2$ spatial dimensions. Our theory describes a general class of Pomeranchuk instabilities with ${N}_{b}$ flavors of boson. At small ${N}_{b}$ we find a family of fixed points characterized by weakly non-Fermi-liquid behavior of the conduction electrons and $z\ensuremath{\approx}2$ critical dynamics for the order-parameter fluctuations, in agreement with the scaling observed by Schattner et al. [Phys. Rev. X 6, 031028 (2016)] for the Ising-nematic transition. Contrary to recent suggestions that this represents an intermediate regime en route to the scaling limit, our calculation suggests that this behavior may persist all the way to the critical point. As the number of bosons ${N}_{b}$ is increased, the model's fixed-point properties cross over to $z\ensuremath{\approx}1$ scaling and non-Fermi-liquid behavior similar to that obtained by Fitzpatrick et al. [Phys. Rev. B 88, 125116 (2013)].
