Particle-hole symmetry breaking and the ν=52 fractional quantum Hall effect

Abstract

We report on the study of the fractional quantum Hall effect at the filling factor 5/2 using exact diagonalization method with torus geometry. The particle-hole symmetry breaking effect is considered using an additional three-body interaction. Both Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian states can be the ground state depending on the sign of the three-body interaction. The results of the low-energy spectrum, the wave function overlap, and the particle-hole parity evolution, have shown clear evidence of a direct sharp transition (possibly first order) from the Pfaffian to the anti-Pfaffian state at the Coulomb point. A quantum phase diagram is established, where one finds further transitions from the Pfaffian or anti-Pfaffian state to the nearby compressible phases induced by a change of the pseudopotential.

Spontaneous Particle-Hole Symmetry Breaking in the ν=5/2 Fractional Quantum Hall Effect

Michael R. Peterson, Kwon Park, S. Das Sarma

The essence of the nu=5/2 fractional quantum Hall effect is believed to be captured by the Moore-Read Pfaffian (or anti-Pfaffian) description. However, a mystery regarding the formation of the Pfaffian state is the role of the three-body interaction Hamiltonian H3 that produces it as an exact ground state and the concomitant particle-hole symmetry breaking. We show that a two-body interaction Hamiltonian H2 constructed via particle-hole symmetrization of H3 produces a ground state nearly exactly approximating the Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian states, respectively, in the spherical geometry. Importantly, the ground state energy of H2 exhibits a "Mexican-hat" structure as a function of particle number in the vicinity of half filling for a given flux indicating spontaneous particle-hole symmetry breaking. This signature is absent for the second Landau level Coulomb interaction at 5/2.

Landau Level Mixing and the Ground State of the ν=5/2 Quantum Hall Effect

Edward H. Rezayi

Inter-Landau-level transitions break particle hole symmetry and will choose either the Pfaffian or the anti-Pfaffian state as the absolute ground state at 5/2 filling of the fractional quantum Hall effect. An approach based on truncating the Hilbert space has favored the anti-Pfaffian. A second approach based on an effective Hamiltonian produced the Pfaffian. In this Letter, perturbation theory is applied to finite sizes without bias to any specific pseudopotential component. This method also singles out the anti-Pfaffian. A critical piece of the effective Hamiltonian, which was absent in previous studies, reverts the ground state at 5/2 to the anti-Pfaffian.

Unveiling particle-hole symmetry breaking and topological transitions in the v = 5/2 fractional quantum hall state via principal component analysis

= 5/2 fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state, as a special single-layer system with an even-denominator filling factor, serves as a promising platform for exploring exotic topological phases. In this study, we employ principal component analysis (PCA), an unsupervised machine learning technique, to investigate the evolution of many-body wavefunctions under particle-hole (PH) symmetry breaking. By introducing a model three-body potential to represent the mechanism of PH symmetry breaking, we demonstrate that the ground state of the system transitions continuously between two distinct non-Abelian topological states, namely the Pfaffian and the anti-Pfaffian, as the strength and direction of the three-body term vary. Notably, the critical transition point corresponds to the pure Coulomb interaction, which preserves PH symmetry. Our results demonstrate that machine learning techniques, exemplified by PCA, provide a powerful and unbiased tool to identify and characterize topological phase transitions in FQH systems. Unlike traditional approaches that rely on predefined model wavefunctions, our method analyzes raw many-body wavefunctions directly, offering a model-independent framework applicable to a broader class of FQH systems undergoing topological transitions driven by symmetry breaking.

Breaking of Particle-Hole Symmetry by Landau Level Mixing in the ν=5/2 Quantized Hall State

Edward H. Rezayi, Steven H. Simon

We perform numerical studies to determine if the fractional quantum Hall state observed at a filling factor of ν=5/2 is the Moore-Read wave function or its particle-hole conjugate, the so-called anti-Pfaffian. Using a truncated Hilbert space approach we find that, for realistic interactions, including Landau-level mixing, the ground state remains fully polarized and the anti-Pfaffian is strongly favored.

Particle-hole-symmetric model for a paired fractional quantum Hall state in a half-filled Landau level

William Hutzel, John J. McCord, Peter Raum +4 more

The fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) observed at half filling of the second Landau level is believed to be caused by a pairing of composite fermions captured by the Moore-Read Pfaffian wave function. The generating Hamiltonian for the Moore-Read Pfaffian is a purely three-body model that breaks particle-hole symmetry and lacks other properties, such as dominate two-body repulsive interactions, expected from a physical model of the FQHE. We use exact diagonalization to study the low-energy states of a more physical two-body generator model derived from the three-body model. We find that the two-body model exhibits the essential features expected from the Moore-Read Pfaffian: pairing, non-Abelian anyon excitations, and a neutral fermion mode. The model also satisfies constraints expected for a physical model of the FQHE at half-filling because it is short range, spatially decaying, particle-hole symmetric, and supports a roton mode with a robust spectral gap in the thermodynamic limit. Hence, this two-body model offers a bridge between artificial three-body generator models for paired states and the physical Coulomb interaction and can be used to further explore properties of non-Abelian physics in the FQHE.
