Abstract

An exact and nonperturbative quantum master equation can be constructed via the calculus on the path integral. It results in hierarchical equations of motion for the reduced density operator. Involved also are a set of well-defined auxiliary density operators that resolve not just the system–bath coupling strength but also memory. In this work, we scale these auxiliary operators individually to achieve a uniform error tolerance, as set by the reduced density operator. An efficient propagator is then proposed to the hierarchical Liouville-space dynamics of quantum dissipation. Numerically exact studies are carried out on the dephasing effect on population transfer in the simple stimulated Raman adiabatic passage scheme. We also make assessments on several perturbative theories for their applicabilities in the present system of study.

Exact quantum master equation via the calculus on path integrals

Rui‐Xue Xu, Ping Cui, Xin-Qi Li +2 more

An exact quantum master equation formalism is constructed for the efficient evaluation of quantum non-Markovian dissipation beyond the weak system-bath interaction regime in the presence of time-dependent external field. A novel truncation scheme is further proposed and compared with other approaches to close the resulting hierarchically coupled equations of motion. The interplay between system-bath interaction strength, non-Markovian property, and required level of hierarchy is also demonstrated with the aid of simple spin-boson systems.

Exact dynamics of dissipative electronic systems and quantum transport: Hierarchical equations of motion approach

Jinshuang Jin, Xiao Hong Zheng, YiJing Yan

A generalized quantum master equation theory that governs the exact, nonperturbative quantum dissipation and quantum transport is formulated in terms of hierarchically coupled equations of motion for an arbitrary electronic system in contact with electrodes under either a stationary or a nonstationary electrochemical potential bias. The theoretical construction starts with the influence functional in path integral, in which the electron creation and annihilation operators are Grassmann variables. Time derivatives on the influence functionals are then performed in a hierarchical manner. Both the multiple-frequency dispersion and the non-Markovian reservoir parametrization schemes are considered for the desired hierarchy construction. The resulting hierarchical equations of motion formalism is in principle exact and applicable to arbitrary electronic systems, including Coulomb interactions, under the influence of arbitrary time-dependent applied bias voltage and external fields. Both the conventional quantum master equation and the real-time diagrammatic formalism of Schon and co-workers can be readily obtained at well defined limits of the present theory. We also show that for a noninteracting electron system, the present hierarchical equations of motion formalism terminates at the second tier exactly, and the Landuer-Buttiker transport current expression is recovered. The present theory renders an exact and numerically tractable tool to evaluate various transient and stationary quantum transport properties of many-electron systems, together with the involving nonperturbative dissipative dynamics.

Dynamics of quantum dissipation systems interacting with bosonic canonical bath: Hierarchical equations of motion approach

Rui‐Xue Xu, YiJing Yan

A nonperturbative theory is developed, aiming at an exact and efficient evaluation of a general quantum system interacting with arbitrary bath environment at any temperature and in the presence of arbitrary time-dependent external fields. An exact hierarchical equations of motion formalism is constructed on the basis of a calculus-on-path-integral algorithm, via the auxiliary influence generating functionals related to the interaction bath correlation functions in a parametrization expansion form. The corresponding continued-fraction Green's functions formalism for quantum dissipation is also presented. Proposed further is the principle of residue correction, not just for truncating the infinite hierarchy, but also for incorporating the small residue dissipation that may arise from the practical difference between the true and parametrized bath correlation functions. The final residue-corrected hierarchical equations of motion can therefore be used practically for the evaluation of arbitrary dissipative quantum systems.

Dynamics of dissipative electronic systems and quantum transport: Hierarchical equations of motion approach

YiJing Yan

A quantum dissipation theory is formulated in terms of hierarchically coupled equations of motion for an arbitrary fermionic system coupled with grand canonical fermionic bath ensembles.1 The theoretical construction starts with the second-quantization influence functional in path integral formalism, in which the fermionic creation and annihilation operators are represented by Grassmann variables. Temporal derivatives on influence functionals are then performed in a hierarchical manner, on the basis of calculus-on-path-integral algorithm. Both the multiple-frequency-dispersion and the non-Markovian reservoir parametrization schemes are considered for the desired hierarchy construction. The resulting formalism is in principle exact, applicable to interacting systems, with arbitrary time-dependent external fields. It renders an exact tool to evaluate various transient and stationary quantum transport properties of many-electron systems. At the second-tier truncation level the present theory recovers the real-time diagrammatic formalism developed by Schön and coworkers.2 For a single-particle system, the hierarchical formalism terminates at the second tier exactly, and the Landuer-Büttiker's transport current expression is readily recovered. Numerical studies will be presented to highlight the richness of transient current through both interacting and noninteracting model systems.

Nonperturbative time-convolutionless quantum master equation from the path integral approach

Guangjun Nan, Qiang Shi, Zhigang Shuai

The time-convolutionless quantum master equation is widely used to simulate reduced dynamics of a quantum system coupled to a bath. However, except for several special cases, applications of this equation are based on perturbative calculation of the dissipative tensor, and are limited to the weak system-bath coupling regime. In this paper, we derive an exact time-convolutionless quantum master equation from the path integral approach, which provides a new way to calculate the dissipative tensor nonperturbatively. Application of the new method is demonstrated in the case of an asymmetrical two-level system linearly coupled to a harmonic bath.

Stochastic description of quantum Brownian dynamics

Yun‐An Yan, Jiushu Shao

Classical Brownian motion has well been investigated since the pioneering work of Einstein, which inspired mathematicians to lay the theoretical foundation of stochastic processes. A stochastic formulation for quantum dynamics of dissipative systems described by the system-plus-bath model has been developed and found many applications in chemical dynamics, spectroscopy, quantum transport, and other fields. This article provides a tutorial review of the stochastic formulation for quantum dissipative dynamics. The key idea is to decouple the interaction between the system and the bath by virtue of the Hubbard-Stratonovich transformation or Itô calculus so that the system and the bath are not directly entangled during evolution, rather they are correlated due to the complex white noises introduced. The influence of the bath on the system is thereby defined by an induced stochastic field, which leads to the stochastic Liouville equation for the system. The exact reduced density matrix can be calculated as the stochastic average in the presence of bath-induced fields. In general, the plain implementation of the stochastic formulation is only useful for short-time dynamics, but not efficient for long-time dynamics as the statistical errors go very fast. For linear and other specific systems, the stochastic Liouville equation is a good starting point to derive the master equation. For general systems with decomposable bath-induced processes, the hierarchical approach in the form of a set of deterministic equations of motion is derived based on the stochastic formulation and provides an effective means for simulating the dissipative dynamics. A combination of the stochastic simulation and the hierarchical approach is suggested to solve the zero-temperature dynamics of the spin-boson model. This scheme correctly describes the coherent-incoherent transition (Toulouse limit) at moderate dissipation and predicts a rate dynamics in the overdamped regime. Challenging problems such as the dynamical description of quantum phase transition (local- ization) and the numerical stability of the trace-conserving, nonlinear stochastic Liouville equation are outlined.
