Abstract

We discuss the behavior of quantum and classical pairwise correlations in critical systems, with the quantumness of the correlations measured by the quantum discord. We analytically derive these correlations for general real density matrices displaying ${Z}_{2}$ symmetry. As an illustration, we analyze both the $XXZ$ and the transverse field Ising models. Finite size as well as infinite chains are investigated and the quantum criticality is discussed. Moreover, we identify the spin functions that govern the correlations. As a further example, we also consider correlations in the Hartree-Fock ground state of the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model. It is then shown that both classical correlation and quantum discord exhibit signatures of the quantum phase transitions.

Quantum correlations in collective spin systems

Chen Wang, Yuyu Zhang, Qing‐Hu Chen

Quantum and classical pairwise correlations in two typical collective spin systems (i.e., the Dicke model and the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick model) are discussed. These correlations in the thermodynamical limit are obtained analytically and in a finite-size system are calculated numerically. Large-size scaling behavior for the quantum discord itself is observed, which has never been reported in another critical system. A logarithmic diverging behavior for the first derivative of the quantum discord is also found in both models, which might be universal in the second-order quantum phase transition. It is suggested that the pronounced maximum or minimum of first derivative of quantum discord signifies the critical point. Comparisons between the quantum discord and the scaled concurrence are performed. It is shown that the quantum discord is very small in one phase and robust in the other phase, while the scaled concurrence shows maximum at the critical point and decays rapidly when away from the the critical point.

Thermal quantum and classical correlations and entanglement in the XY spin model with three-spin interaction

Yanchao Li, Hai‐Qing Lin

Pairwise quantum discord (QD) and classical correlation (CC) are studied in the $\mathit{XY}$ spin chain with three-spin interaction. We analyze their capability in detecting quantum phase transitions (QPTs) at both zero and finite temperatures and find that the pairwise QD of two neighboring spins is more reliable than that of any other distances in identifying QPTs. Both the QD and CC detect quantum critical points associated with first- and higher-order QPTs caused by field and three-spin interactions at finite temperatures. In addition, we find a different finite-size scaling behavior for QD from previous reports for the transverse field Ising case and show some interesting phenomena of QD and entanglement of formation for finite temperatures.

Quantum correlations in spin chains and highly symmetric states

Barış Çakmak

Non-classical correlations arise in various quantum mechanical systems. Characterization and quantification of these correlations is an important and active branch of research in the field of quantum information theory. Investigation of non-classical correlations in condensed matter systems gives important insights about the characteristics of these systems. In particular, systems possessing a quantum critical point in their phase diagrams have attracted much attention due to the peculiar behavior of correlations near these points. In this thesis, we have investigated two distinct quantum spin models from the perspective of correlations and, we have discussed the correlation content of an important subclass of bipartite states. We start by an analytical calculation of the quantum discord for a system composed of spin-j and spin-1/2 subsystems possessing rotational symmetry. We have compared our results with the quantum discord of states having similar symmetries and seen that in rotationally invariant states the amount of quantum discord is much higher. Moreover, using the well known entanglement properties of these states, we have compared their quantum discord with entanglement and seen that quantum discord is higher than the entanglement. Next, we have investigated the thermal quantum correlations and entanglement in spin-1 Bose-Hubbard model with two and three particles. We have demonstrated that the energy level crossings in the ground state of the system are signalled by both the behavior of thermal quantum correlations and entanglement. Finally, we have investigated various thermal quantum and total correlations in the anisotropic XY spin-chain with transverse magnetic field. We have shown that the ability of the considered measures to estimate the critical points of this system at finite temperature strongly depends on the anisotropy parameter of the Hamiltonian. Furthermore, we have studied the effect of temperature on long-range correlations of the XY chain.

QUANTUM DISCORD IN THE GROUND STATE OF SPIN CHAINS

M. S. Sarandy, THIAGO R. DE OLIVEIRA, Luigi Amico A

The ground state of a quantum spin chain is a natural playground for investigating correlations. Nevertheless, not all correlations are genuinely of quantum nature. Here we review the recent progress to quantify the "quantumness" of the correlations throughout the phase diagram of quantum spin systems. Focusing to one spatial dimension, we discuss the behavior of quantum discord (QD) close to quantum phase transitions (QPT). In contrast to the two-spin entanglement, pairwise discord is effectively long-ranged in critical regimes. Besides the features of QPT, QD is especially feasible to explore the factorization phenomenon, giving rise to nontrivial ground classical states in quantum systems. The effects of spontaneous symmetry breaking are also discussed as well as the identification of quantum critical points through correlation witnesses.

QUANTUM DISCORD, DECOHERENCE AND QUANTUM PHASE TRANSITION

Indrani Bose, Amit Kumar Pal

Quantum discord is a more general measure of quantum correlations than entanglement and has been proposed as a resource in certain quantum information processing tasks. The computation of discord is mostly confined to two-qubit systems for which an analytical calculational scheme is available. The utilization of quantum correlations in quantum information-based applications is limited by the problem of decoherence, i.e., the loss of coherence due to the inevitable interaction of a quantum system with its environment. The dynamics of quantum correlations due to decoherence may be studied in the Kraus operator formalism for different types of quantum channels representing system-environment interactions. In this review, we describe the salient features of the dynamics of classical and quantum correlations in a two-qubit system under Markovian (memoryless) time evolution. The two-qubit state considered is described by the reduced density matrix obtained from the ground state of a spin model. The models considered include the transverse-field XY model in one dimension, a special case of which is the transverse-field Ising model, and the XXZ spin chain. The quantum channels studied include the amplitude damping, bit-flip, bit-phase-flip and phase-flip channels. The Kraus operator formalism is briefly introduced and the origins of different types of dynamics discussed. One can identify appropriate quantities associated with the dynamics of quantum correlations which provide signatures of quantum phase transitions in the spin models. Experimental observations of the different types of dynamics are also mentioned.

Quantum and classical thermal correlations in the XY spin- 1 2 chain

Jonas Maziero, H. C. Guzman, Lucas C. Céleri +2 more

We investigate pairwise quantum correlation as measured by the quantum discord as well as its classical counterpart in the thermodynamic limit of anisotropic $\mathit{XY}$ spin-$1/2$ chains in a transverse magnetic field for both zero and finite temperatures. Analytical expressions for both classical and quantum correlations are obtained for spin pairs at any distance. In the case of zero temperature, it is shown that the quantum discord for spin pairs farther than second neighbors is able to characterize a quantum phase transition, even though pairwise entanglement is absent for such distances. For finite temperatures, we show that quantum correlations can be increased with temperature in the presence of a magnetic field. Moreover, in the $\mathit{XX}$ limit, thermal quantum discord is found to be dominant over classical correlation while the opposite scenario takes place for the transverse field Ising model limit.
