Pairing, Off-Diagonal Long-Range Order, and Quantum Phase Transition in Strongly Attracting Ultracold Bose Gas Mixtures in Tight Waveguides

Abstract

A model of two 1D ideal Bose gases A and B with strong odd-wave AB attractions induced by a p-wave AB Feshbach resonance is studied. The model is solved exactly by a Bose-Bose duality mapping, and it is shown that there is no A-component or B-component Bose-Einstein condensation and no AB-pair off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO), but both AA-pair and BB-pair ODLRO. After generalization by adding even-wave AA and BB repulsions and reducing the strength of the odd-wave AB attraction by Feshbach resonance detuning, a quantum phase transition occurs between a phase with AB contact nodes and one with no such nodes.

Ground state of a mixture of two bosonic Calogero-Sutherland gases with strong odd-wave interspecies attraction

Marvin D. Girardeau, G. E. Astrakharchik

A model of two Calogero-Sutherland Bose gases $A$ and $B$ with strong odd-wave $\mathit{AB}$ attractions induced by a $p$-wave $\mathit{AB}$ Feshbach resonance is studied. The ground-state wave function is found analytically by a Bose-Bose duality mapping, which permits one to accurately determine static physical properties by a Monte Carlo method. The condensation of particles or particle pairs (molecules) is tested by analyzing the presence of the off-diagonal long-range order in one- or two- body density matrices. The $p$-wave symmetry of $\mathit{AB}$ interaction makes possible quasicondensation of type $A$ particles at the Fermi momentum of the $B$ component. The zero-temperature phase diagram is drawn in terms of densities and interaction strengths.

Soluble Models of Strongly Interacting Two-level Ultracold Gases in Tight Waveguides with Coupling to the Quantized Electromagnetic Field

Marvin D. Girardeau

A generalized Fermi-Bose mapping method is used to determine the exact ground states of six models of strongly interacting ultracold gases of two-level atoms in tight waveguides, which are generalizations of the Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas (1D Bose gas with point hard cores) and fermionic Tonks-Girardeau (FTG) gas (1D spin-aligned Fermi gas with infinitely strong zero-range attractions). Three of these models exhibit a quantum phase transition in the presence of an external magnetic field, associated with a cooperative ground state rearrangement wherein Fermi energy is traded for internal excitation energy. After investigation of these models in the absence of an electromagnetic field, one is generalized to include resonant interactions with a single photon mode, leading to a possible thermal phase transition associated with Dicke superradiance.

Soluble Models of Strongly Interacting Ultracold Gas Mixtures in Tight Waveguides

Marvin D. Girardeau, Anna Minguzzi

A Fermi-Bose mapping method is used to determine the exact ground states of several models of mixtures of strongly interacting ultracold gases in tight waveguides, which are generalizations of the Tonks-Girardeau (TG) gas (1D Bose gas with point hard cores) and fermionic Tonks-Girardeau (FTG) gas (1D spin-aligned Fermi gas with infinitely strong zero-range attractions). We detail the case of a Bose-Fermi mixture with TG boson-boson (BB) and boson-fermion (BF) interactions. Exact results are given for density profiles in a harmonic trap, single-particle density matrices, momentum distributions, and density-density correlations. Since the ground state is highly degenerate, we analyze the splitting of the ground manifold for large but finite BB and BF repulsions.

Feshbach Resonance in Optical Lattices and the Quantum Ising Model

M. J. Bhaseen, A. O. Silver, Martin Hohenadler +1 more

Motivated by experiments on heteronuclear Feshbach resonances in Bose mixtures, we investigate s-wave pairing of two species of bosons in an optical lattice. The zero temperature phase diagram supports a rich array of superfluid and Mott phases and a network of quantum critical points. This topology reveals an underlying structure that is succinctly captured by a two-component Landau theory. Within the second Mott lobe we establish a quantum phase transition described by the paradigmatic longitudinal and transverse field Ising model. This is confirmed by exact diagonalization of the 1D bosonic Hamiltonian. We also find this transition in the homonuclear case.

Criteria of off-diagonal long-range order in Bose and Fermi systems based on the Lee-Yang cluster expansion method

Naoyuki Sakumichi, Norio Kawakami, Masahito Ueda

The quantum-statistical cluster expansion method of Lee and Yang is extended to investigate off-diagonal long-range order (ODLRO) in one-component and multicomponent mixtures of bosons or fermions. Our formulation is applicable to both a uniform system and a trapped system without local-density approximation and allows systematic expansions of one-particle and multiparticle reduced density matrices in terms of cluster functions, which are defined for the same system with Boltzmann statistics. Each term in this expansion can be associated with a Lee-Yang graph. We elucidate a physical meaning of each Lee-Yang graph; in particular, for a mixture of ultracold atoms and bound dimers, an infinite sum of the ladder-type Lee-Yang 0-graphs is shown to lead to Bose-Einstein condensation of dimers below the critical temperature. In the case of Bose statistics, an infinite series of Lee-Yang 1-graphs is shown to converge and gives the criteria of ODLRO at the one-particle level. Applications to a dilute Bose system of hard spheres are also made. In the case of Fermi statistics, an infinite series of Lee-Yang 2-graphs is shown to converge and gives the criteria of ODLRO at the two-particle level. Applications to a two-component Fermi gas in the tightly bound limit are also made.

Stability of spinor Fermi gases in tight waveguides

Adolfo del Campo, Juan Gonzalo Muga, Marvin D. Girardeau

The two- and three-body correlation functions of the ground state of an optically trapped ultracold spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Fermi gas (SFG) in a tight waveguide [one-dimensional (1D) regime] are calculated in the plane of even- and odd-wave coupling constants, assuming a 1D attractive zero-range odd-wave interaction induced by a 3D $p$-wave Feshbach resonance, as well as the usual repulsive zero-range even-wave interaction stemming from 3D $s$-wave scattering. The calculations are based on the exact mapping from the SFG to a ``Lieb-Liniger-Heisenberg'' model with delta-function repulsions depending on isotropic Heisenberg spin-spin interactions, and indicate that the SFG should be stable against three-body recombination in a large region of the coupling constant plane encompassing parts of both the ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic phases. However, the limiting case of the fermionic Tonks-Girardeau gas, a spin-aligned 1D Fermi gas with infinitely attractive $p$-wave interactions, is unstable in this sense. Effects due to the dipolar interaction and a Zeeman term due to a resonance-generating magnetic field do not lead to shrinkage of the region of stability of the SFG.
