Abstract

We perform a theoretical study of composed superconducting qubit systems for the case of a coupled qubit configuration based on a hybrid qubit circuit made of both charge and phase qubits, which are coupled via a σ x ⊗ σ z interaction. We compute the system's eigen-energies in terms of the qubit transition frequencies and the strength of the inter-qubit coupling, and describe the sensitivity of the energy crossing/anti-crossing features to such coupling. We compute the hybrid system's dissipative dynamics for the cases of i) collective and ii) independent decoherence, whereby the system interacts with one common and two different baths of harmonic oscillators, respectively. The calculations have been performed within the Bloch-Redfield formalism and we report the solutions for the populations and the coherences of the system's reduced density matrix. The dephasing and relaxation rates are explicitly calculated as a function of the heat bath temperature.

Decoherence of a two-qubit system away from perfect symmetry

M. J. Storcz, Frank Hellmann, Calin Hrelescu +1 more

The decoherence of an asymmetric two-qubit system that is coupled via a variable interaction term to a common bath or two individual baths of harmonic oscillators is examined. The dissipative dynamics are evaluated using the Bloch-Redfield formalism. It is shown that the behavior of the decoherence effects is affected mostly by the symmetries between the qubit operator that is coupled to the environment and the temperature, whereas the differences between the two bath configurations are very small. Moreover, it is elaborated that small imperfections of the qubit parameters do not necessarily lead to a drastic enhancement of the decoherence rates.

Phonon-induced relaxation and decoherence times of the hybrid qubit in silicon quantum dots

Elena Ferraro, Marco Fanciulli, Marco De Michielis

We study theoretically the phonon-induced relaxation and decoherence processes in the hybrid qubit in silicon. A hybrid qubit behaves as a charge qubit when the detuning is close to zero and as a spin qubit for large detuning values. It is realized starting from an electrostatically defined double quantum dot where three electrons are confined and manipulated through only electrical tuning. By employing a three-level effective model for the qubit and describing the environment bath as a series of harmonic oscillators in the thermal equilibrium states, we extract the relaxation and decoherence times as a function of the bath spectral density and of the bath temperature using the Bloch-Redfield theory. For Si quantum dots the energy dispersion is strongly affected by the physics of the valley, i.e., the conduction band minima, so we also included the contribution of the valley excitations in our analysis. Our results offer fundamental information on the system decoherence properties when the unavoidable interaction with the environment is included and temperature effects are considered.

Decoherence of two Josephson charge qubits coupled via σxσx -type coupling and exposed to σx noise

Ahmad Abliz, Shu‐Shen Li, Lian-Liang Sun +2 more

Decoherence properties of two Josephson charge qubits coupled via the ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{x}{\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{x}$ type are investigated. Considering the special structure of this new design, the dissipative effects arising from the circuit impedance providing the fluxes for the qubits' superconducting quantum interference device loops coupled to the ${\ensuremath{\sigma}}_{x}$ qubit variables are considered. The results show that the overall decoherence effects are significantly strong in this qubit design. It is found that the dissipative effects are stronger in the case of coupling to two uncorrelated baths than are found in the case of one common bath.

Decoherence and dephasing in coupled Josephson qubits

Michele Governale, Milena Grifoni, Gerd Schön

We investigate the decoherence and dephasing of two coupled Josephson qubits. With the interaction between the qubits being generated by current–current correlations, two different situations in which the qubits are coupled to the same bath, or to two independent baths, are considered. Upon focussing on dissipation being caused by the fluctuations of voltage sources, the relaxation and dephasing rates are explicitly evaluated. Analytical and numerical results for the coupled qubits dynamics are provided.

Dissipation and decoherence induced by collective dephasing in a coupled-qubit system with a common bath

Zhihai Wang, Yanjun Ji, Yong Li +1 more

The longitudinal coupling of a system to the bath usually induces the pure dephasing of the system. In this paper, we study the collective dephasing induced dissipation and decoherence in a coupled-qubit system with a common bath. It is shown that compared with the case of the same system with independent baths, the interference between the dephasing processes of different qubits induced by the common bath significantly changes the dissipation of the system. For the system of two coupled qubits, the interference leads to a slower dissipation (and decoherence) in the single-excitation subspace. As the system size increases, we find that the decay rate of the first excited state in the single-excitation subspace will tend to be a constant in the case of a common bath and will drop to zero in the case of independent baths. All of our results on collective dephasing induced dissipation can be explained based on a simple model with Fermi's golden rule.

Multilevel quantum description of decoherence in superconducting qubits

Guido Burkard, R. H. Koch, David Peter Divincenzo

We present a multilevel quantum theory of decoherence for a general circuit realization of a superconducting qubit. Using electrical network graph theory, we derive a Hamiltonian for the circuit. The dissipative circuit elements (external impedances, shunt resistors) are described using the Caldeira-Leggett model. The master equation for the superconducting phases in the Born-Markov approximation is derived and brought into the Bloch-Redfield form in order to describe multilevel dissipative quantum dynamics of the circuit. The model takes into account leakage effects, i.e., transitions from the allowed qubit states to higher excited states of the system. As a special case, we truncate the Hilbert space and derive a two-level (Bloch) theory with characteristic relaxation ${(T}_{1})$ and decoherence ${(T}_{2})$ times. We apply our theory to the class of superconducting flux qubits; however, the formalism can be applied for both superconducting flux and charge qubits.
