Spin dynamics and structure formation in a spin-1 condensate in a magnetic field

Abstract

We study the dynamics of a trapped spin-1 condensate in a magnetic field. First, we analyze the homogeneous system, for which the dynamics can be understood in terms of orbits in phase space. We analytically solve for the dynamical evolution of the populations of the various Zeeman components of the homogeneous system. This result is then applied via a local-density approximation to trapped quasi-one-dimensional condensates. Our analysis of the trapped system in a magnetic field shows that both the mean-field and Zeeman regimes are simultaneously realized, and we argue that the border between these two regions is where spin domains and phase defects are generated. We propose a method to experimentally tune the position of this border.

Ground states of trapped spin-1 condensates in magnetic field

Michał Matuszewski

We consider a spin-1 Bose-Einstein condensate trapped in a harmonic potential under the influence of a homogeneous magnetic field. We investigate spatial and spin structure of the mean-field ground states under constraints on the number of atoms and the total magnetization. We show that the trapping potential can make the antiferromagnetic condensate separate into three distinct phases and ferromagnetic condensate into two distinct phases. In the ferromagnetic case, the magnetization is located in the center of the harmonic trap, while in the antiferromagnetic case magnetized phases appear in the outer regions. We describe how the transition from the Thomas-Fermi regime to the single-mode approximation regime with decreasing number of atoms results in the disappearance of the domains. We suggest that the ground states can be created in experiment by adiabatically changing the magnetic-field strength.

Vortex Formation in Spin-Orbit Coupled Spin-1 Bose Condensates with Magnetic Field

Qiang Zhao

In this article, we study the vortex formation in spin-1 spin–orbit coupling rotating Bose–Einstein condensates. Numerical results are obtained by solving the spinor Gross–Pitaevskii equation. We mainly focus on the influences of external magnetic fields on vortex structures and dynamics properties. With the increase in magnetic field strength, the populations of magnetic components j=±1 reach the identical value. For the density profile, the three components present identical density structures, and the size of condensates is nearly the same. In addition, some related physical quantities, such as the time taken for the arrival of a steady population and root-mean-square size, kinetic energy, and total angular momentum, are calculated. The results show that these quantities decrease as the magnetic field strength increases. Moreover, we also investigate the time evolution of angular momentum. It is seen that the dynamic behavior of the magnetic components j=±1 is exactly consistent, and the total angular momentum reduces in the presence of the strong magnetic field. This reflects the fact that the introduction of the strong magnetic field makes it difficult to rotate the condensate, and thus, it is disadvantageous for generating more vortices.

Excited spin states and phase separation in spinor Bose-Einstein condensates

Michał Matuszewski, Tristram J. Alexander, Yuri S. Kivshar

We analyze the structure of spin-one Bose-Einstein condensates in the presence of a homogeneous magnetic field. We classify the homogeneous stationary states and study their existence, bifurcations, and energy spectra. We reveal that phase separation can occur in the ground state of antiferromagnetic (polar) condensates while the spin components of the ferromagnetic condensates are always miscible and no phase separation occurs. Our theoretical model, confirmed by numerical simulations, explains that this phenomenon takes place when the energy of the lowest homogeneous state is a concave function of the magnetization. In particular, we predict that phase separation can be observed in a $^{23}\text{N}\text{a}$ condensate confined in a highly elongated harmonic trap. Finally, we discuss the phenomena of dynamical instability and spin domain formation.

Population and phase dynamics of F=1 spinor condensates in an external magnetic field

Dimas Rodrigues Romano, E. J. V. de Passos

We show that the classical dynamics underlying the mean-field description of homogeneous mixtures of spinor $F=1$ Bose-Einstein condensates in an external magnetic field is integrable as a consequence of number conservation and axial symmetry in spin space. The population dynamics depends only on the quadratic term of the Zeeman energy and on the strength of the spin-dependent term of the atom-atom interaction. We determine the equilibrium populations as function of the ratio of these two quantities and the miscibility of the hyperfine components in the ground state spinors are thoroughly discussed. Outside the equilibrium, the populations are always a periodic function of time where the periodic motion can be a libration or a rotation. Our studies also indicate the absence of metastability.
