COMMENTS ON THE ENTANGLEMENT ENTROPY ON FUZZY SPACES

Abstract

We locate the relevant degrees of freedom for the entanglement entropy on some 2+1 fuzzy models. It is found that the entropy is stored in the near boundary degrees of freedom. We give a simple analytical derivation for the area law using 1/N like expansion when only the near boundary degrees of freedom are incorporated. Numerical and qualitative evidences for the validity of near boundary approximation are finally given.

We study the entanglement entropy of a scalar field in $2+1$ spacetime where space is modeled by a fuzzy sphere and a fuzzy disc. In both models we evaluate numerically the resulting entropies and find that they are proportional to the number of boundary degrees of freedom. In the Moyal plane limit of the fuzzy disc the entanglement entropy per unite area (length) diverges if the ignored region is of infinite size. The divergence is (interpreted) of IR-UV mixing origin. In general we expect the entanglement entropy per unite area to be finite on a noncommutative space if the ignored region is of finite size.

Entanglement Entropy of Interacting Scalar Theories on Fuzzy Spaces

We investigate the impact of self-interactions on the Rényi and entanglement entropies of a scalar field on $(2+1)$-dimensional spacetimes, whose spatial sections are modeled by fuzzy spaces, specifically the fuzzy sphere and the fuzzy disc. We compute the first-order perturbative correction induced by a $λφ^4$ interaction using the Green's function approach. In contrast to the free theory, where the entanglement entropy is dominated by degrees of freedom near the entangling boundary and obeys an area law, we find that the interaction correction has an extensive bulk contribution, receiving significant contributions from degrees of freedom throughout the fuzzy space. For the fuzzy sphere, the correction exhibits strong infrared sensitivity associated with the zero mode. We isolate and resolve this zero-mode IR divergence by projecting out the zero mode, thereby obtaining a physically meaningful quantity. In the commutative continuum limit, the interaction correction has the same degree of UV divergence as the free entropy but does not obey a pure area law. Furthermore, we analyze the Moyal plane limit, where the interaction correction exhibits a distinct IR divergence. We discuss the physical origin of these extensive bulk features and examine their possible connection to the celebrated UV/IR mixing phenomenon in noncommutative quantum field theories.

Mutual information on the fuzzy sphere

We numerically calculate entanglement entropy and mutual information for a massive free scalar field on commutative (ordinary) and noncommutative (fuzzy) spheres. We regularize the theory on the commutative geometry by discretizing the polar coordinate, whereas the theory on the noncommutative geometry naturally posseses a finite and adjustable number of degrees of freedom. Our results show that the UV-divergent part of the entanglement entropy on a fuzzy sphere does not follow an area law, while the entanglement entropy on a commutative sphere does. Nonetheless, we find that mutual information (which is UV-finite) is the same in both theories. This suggests that nonlocality at short distances does not affect quantum correlations over large distances in a free field theory.

A generalized volume law for entanglement entropy on the fuzzy sphere

We investigate entanglement entropy in a scalar field theory on the fuzzy sphere. The theory is realized by a matrix model. In our previous study, we confirmed that entanglement entropy in the free case is proportional to the square of the boundary area of a focused region. Here we argue that this behavior of entanglement entropy can be understood by the fact that the theory is regularized by matrices, and further examine the dependence of entanglement entropy on the matrix size. In the interacting case, by performing Monte Carlo simulations, we observe a transition from a generalized volume law, which is obtained by integrating the square of area law, to the square of area law.

Entanglement entropy of a scalar field across a spherical boundary in the Einstein universe

A scalar field in the ground state, when partially hidden from observation by a spherical boundary, acquires entanglement entropy $S$ proportional to the area of the surface. This area law is well established in flat space, where it follows almost directly from dimensional arguments. We study its validity in an Einstein universe, whose curvature provides an additional physical parameter on which the entropy could, in principle, depend. The surprisingly simple result is that the entanglement entropy still scales linearly with the area. This is supported by other observations to the effect that the entanglement entropy arises mostly from degrees of freedom near the boundary, making it insensitive to the large-scale geometry of the background space.

Entanglement entropy on a fuzzy sphere with a UV cutoff

Abstract We introduce a UV cutoff into free scalar field theory on the noncommutative (fuzzy) two-sphere. Due to the IR-UV connection, varying the UV cutoff allows us to control the effective nonlocality scale of the theory. In the resulting fuzzy geometry, we establish which degrees of freedom lie within a specific geometric subregion and compute the associated vacuum entanglement entropy. Entanglement entropy for regions smaller than the effective nonlocality scale is extensive, while entanglement entropy for regions larger than the effective nonlocality scale follows the area law. This reproduces features previously obtained in the strong coupling regime through holography. We also show that mutual information is unaffected by the UV cutoff.
