Abstract

We study the quantum phase diagram of the Heisenberg planar antiferromagnet with a subset of four-spin ring exchange interactions, using the recently proposed hierarchical mean-field approach. By identifying relevant degrees of freedom, we are able to use a single variational ansatz to map the entire phase diagram of the model and uncover the nature of its various phases. It is shown that there exists a transition between a Néel state and a quantum paramagnetic phase, characterized by broken translational invariance. The non-magnetic phase preserves the lattice rotational symmetry, and has a correlated plaquette nature. Our results also suggest that this phase transition can be properly described within the Landau paradigm.

Hierarchical mean-field approach to the J1−J2 Heisenberg model on a square lattice

Леонид Исаев, Gerardo Ortíz, J. Dukelsky

We study the quantum phase diagram and excitation spectrum of the frustrated ${J}_{1}\text{\ensuremath{-}}{J}_{2}$ spin-1/2 Heisenberg Hamiltonian. A hierarchical mean-field approach, at the heart of which lies the idea of identifying relevant degrees of freedom, is developed. Thus, by performing educated, manifestly symmetry-preserving mean-field approximations, we unveil fundamental properties of the system. We then compare various coverings of the square lattice with plaquettes, dimers, and other degrees of freedom, and show that only the symmetric plaquette covering, which reproduces the original Bravais lattice, leads to the known phase diagram. The intermediate quantum paramagnetic phase is shown to be a (singlet) plaquette crystal, connected with the neighboring N\'eel phase by a continuous phase transition. We also introduce fluctuations around the hierarchical mean-field solutions, and demonstrate that in the paramagnetic phase the ground and first excited states are separated by a finite gap, which closes in the N\'eel and columnar phases. Our results suggest that the quantum phase transition between N\'eel and paramagnetic phases can be properly described within the Ginzburg-Landau-Wilson paradigm.

Quantum phase diagram of the spin- 1 2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the square-kagome lattice: A tensor network study

Saeed S. Jahromi, Yasir Iqbal

We study the ground-state phase diagram of the spin-$1/2$ antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on the square-kagome lattice using infinite projected entangled-pair states (iPEPS). By systematically varying the ratio of exchange couplings on triangular and square plaquettes, we establish a complete quantum phase diagram in the thermodynamic limit. In the intermediate-coupling regime, we identify four distinct nonmagnetic phases that are unambiguously characterized as valence-bond crystals (VBCs) by their symmetry-inequivalent patterns of strong and weak spin-spin correlations. These include a plaquette crossed-dimer VBC, a loop-six VBC stabilized around the isotropic point, a generalized pinwheel VBC with reduced rotational symmetry, and a decorated loop-six VBC proximate to ferrimagnetic order. We determine the phase boundaries using a combination of bond-resolved correlation functions, entanglement entropy, and magnetization. For transitions not accompanied by sharp entanglement signatures, we extract the spin gap from finite-field simulations, allowing us to distinguish gapped and gapless VBC phases. At larger coupling ratios, the system undergoes transitions into imperfect and perfect ferrimagnetic states. Our results resolve long-standing ambiguities in the square-kagome Heisenberg model and provide a quantitatively reliable reference for future theoretical and experimental studies of frustrated quantum magnets.

Phase diagrams of S = 1 2 bilayer models of SU(2) symmetric antiferromagnets

Fan Zhang, Nisheeta Desai, Wenan Guo +1 more

We study the $T=0$ phase diagrams of models of bilayers of $S=1/2$ square lattices antiferromagnets with SU(2) Heisenberg symmetry that have 2, 4, and 6 spin exchanges. We study two families of bilayer models with distinct internal symmetries and, hence, different phase diagram topologies. A traditional bilayer model in which the interlayer interaction is Heisenberg so that the two layers can exchange spin (and energy) with each other, making it possible to achieve a simple dimerized valence bond liquid-like state. The resulting phase diagram is rich with Néel, valence bond solid and simple dimer phases, and both first-order and continuous transitions, which we demonstrate are consistent with the conventional Landau theory of order parameters. In the second family of models in which the layers can exchange only energy but no spin (reminiscent of the Ashkin-Teller coupling), the simple dimer state cannot occur. The phase diagrams reveal a number of phase transitions that are accessed for the first time. We find that the phase transition between Néel and VBS is first order in both the spin-spin and energy-energy coupled models, although they have strikingly distinct finite-size scaling behavior and that the transition from VBS to dimer in the spin-spin coupling model deviates from the expected scenario of an XY model with dangerously irrelevant four-fold anisotropy.

Magnetic Phase Diagrams and Magnetization Plateaus of the Spin-1/2 Antiferromagnetic Heisenberg Model on a Square-Kagome Lattice with Three Nonequivalent Exchange Interactions

Katsuhiro Morita, Takami Tohyama

Magnetization plateaus in quantum spin systems emerges in two-dimensional frustrated systems such as kagome lattice. The spin-1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg model on square-kagome lattice is also appropriate for the study of magnetization plateau. Motivated by recent experimental finding of such a square-kagome lattice with nonequivalent three bonds, we investigate the phase diagrams and magnetization plateaus of the lattice by the exact diagonalization method. In addition to previously reported the 1/3 and 2/3 plateaus in the model with two equivalent bonds, we find a new 2/3 plateau whose magnetic structure is characterized by spontaneously broken four-fold rotational symmetry. The plateau appears only in the case of three nonequivalent bonds. We propose the possibility of finding plateaus including the new one.

Quantum phase diagram of the spin-1 J1−J2 Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice

Shou-Shu Gong, Wei Kang Zhu, D. N. Sheng

Strongly correlated systems with geometric frustrations can host the emergent phases of matter with unconventional properties. Here, we study the spin $S=1$ Heisenberg model on the honeycomb lattice with the antiferromagnetic first- (${J}_{1}$) and second-neighbor (${J}_{2}$) interactions ($0.0\ensuremath{\le}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\le}0.5$) by means of density-matrix renormalization group. In the parameter regime ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.27$, the system sustains a N\'eel antiferromagnetic phase. At the large ${J}_{2}$ side ${J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\gtrsim}0.32$, a stripe antiferromagnetic phase is found. Between the two magnetic ordered phases $0.27\ensuremath{\lesssim}{J}_{2}/{J}_{1}\ensuremath{\lesssim}0.32$, we find a nonmagnetic intermediate region with a plaquette valence-bond order. Although our calculations are limited within a six unit-cell width on cylinder, we present evidence that this plaquette state could be a strong candidate for this nonmagnetic region in the thermodynamic limit. We also briefly discuss the nature of the quantum phase transitions in the system. We gain further insight into the nonmagnetic phases in the spin-1 system by comparing its phase diagram with the spin-$1/2$ system.

Quantum phases of the planar antiferromagnetic J1−J2−J3 Heisenberg model

Johannes Reuther, P. Wölfle, R. Darradi +3 more

We present results for a complementary analysis of the frustrated planar ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{3}$ spin-1/2 quantum antiferromagnet (AFM). Using dynamical functional renormalization group, high-order-coupled cluster calculations, and series expansion based on the flow equation method, we have calculated generalized momentum-resolved susceptibilities, the ground-state energy, the magnetic-order parameter, and the elementary excitation gap. From these, we determine a quantum phase diagram that shows a large window of a quantum paramagnetic (QP) phase situated among the N\'eel, spiral, and collinear states, which are present already in the classical ${J}_{1}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{2}\ensuremath{-}{J}_{3}$ AFM. Our findings are consistent with substantial plaquette correlations in the QP phase. The extent of the QP region is found to be in satisfying agreement between the three different approaches we have employed.
