Abstract

We study the effect of decoherence on the sub-Planck scale structures of the vibrational wave packet of a molecule. The time evolution of these wave packets is investigated under the influence of a photonic or phononic environment. We determine the master equation describing the reduced dynamics of the wave packet and analyze the sensitivity of the sub-Planck structures against decoherence in the case of a hydrogen iodide (HI) molecule.

Mesoscopic superposition and sub-Planck-scale structure in molecular wave packets

Suranjana Ghosh, Aravind Chiruvelli, J. Banerji +1 more

We demonstrate the possibility of realizing sub-Planck-scale structures in the mesoscopic superposition of molecular wave packets involving vibrational levels. The time evolution of the wave packet, taken here as the SU(2) coherent state of the Morse potential describing hydrogen iodide molecules, produces macroscopic-quantum-superposition-like states, responsible for the above phenomenon. We investigate the phase-space dynamics of the coherent state through the Wigner function approach and identify the interference phenomena behind the sub-Planck-scale structures. The optimal parameter ranges are specified for observing these features.

Decoherence of wave packets in an anharmonic oscillator

Péter Földi, M. G. Benedict, Attila Czirják +1 more

The time evolution of wave packets in the Morse potential is investigated under the influence of the environment consisting of harmonic oscillators. These oscillators represent photon or phonon modes and are assumed to be in thermal equilibrium. Our model explicitly incorporates the fact that in the case of a nonequidistant spectrum the rates of the environment induced transitions are different for each transition. The nonunitary time evolution is visualized by the aid of the corresponding Wigner function. The time scale of decoherence is much shorter than that of dissipation, and gives rise to states that are mixtures of localized states along the phase-space orbit of the corresponding classical particle. This behavior is to a large extent independent of the coupling strength, the temperature of the environment, and also the initial state.

Exact wave packet decoherence dynamics in a discrete spectrum environment

Matisse Wei-Yuan Tu, Wei-Min Zhang

We find an exact analytical solution of the reduced density matrix from the Feynman-Vernon influence functional theory for a wave packet influenced by an environment containing a few discrete modes. We obtain two intrinsic energy scales relating to the time scales of the system and the environment. Different relationship between these two scales alters the overall form of the solution of the system. We also introduce a decoherence measure for a single wave packet which is defined as the ratio of Schrödinger uncertainty over the delocalization extension of the wave packet and characterizes the time-evolution behavior of the off-diagonal reduced density matrix element. We utilize the exact solution and the docherence measure to study the wave packet decoherence dynamics. We further demonstrate how the dynamical diffusion of the wave packet leads to non-Markovian decoherence in such a microscopic environment.

Decay of the Loschmidt Echo for Quantum States with Sub-Planck-Scale Structures

Philippe Jacquod, İnanç Adagideli, C. W. J. Beenakker

Quantum states extended over a large volume in phase space have oscillations from quantum interferences in their Wigner distribution on scales smaller than variant Planck's over 2pi [W. H. Zurek, Nature (London) 412, 712 (2001)]]. We investigate the influence of those sub-Planck-scale structures on the sensitivity to an external perturbation of the state's time evolution. While we do find an accelerated decay of the Loschmidt Echo for an extended state in comparison to a localized wave packet, the acceleration is described entirely by the classical Lyapunov exponent and hence cannot originate from quantum interference.

COHERENT CONTROL OF MESOSCOPIC SUPERPOSITIONS IN A DIATOMIC MOLECULE

Suranjana Ghosh

A phase controlled wave packet, recently used in experiment of wave packet interferometry of a diatomic molecule, is investigated to obtain mesoscopic superposition structures, useful in quantum metrology. This analysis provides a new way of obtaining sub-Planck scale structures at smaller time scale of revival dynamics. We study a number of situations for delineating the smallest interference structures and their control by tailoring the relative phase between two subsidiary wave packets. We also find the most appropriate state, so far, for high precision parameter estimation in a system of diatomic molecule.

Wave packet motion and decoherence in an anharmonic potential

Péter Földi, M. G. Benedict, Attila Czirják +1 more

Abstract The time evolution of wave packets in the Morse potential is investigated under the influence of the environment consisting of harmonic oscillators. We obtain a Markovian master equation that incorporates the fact that due to the nonequidistant spectrum, the relaxation rate of each energy eigenstate is different. The nonunitary time evolution is visualized by the aid of the Wigner function related to the reduced density operator of the Morse system. The time scale of decoherence is much shorter than that of dissipation, and gives rise to states which are mixtures of localized states along the phase space orbit of the corresponding classical particle. This behaviour is to a large extent independent of the coupling strength, the temperature of the environment and also of the initial state.
