Abstract

In this paper, using a standard quantum chemistry approach based on pseudopotentials for atomic core representation, Gaussian basis sets, and effective core polarization potentials, we investigate the electronic properties of the MgH$^+$ ion. We first determine potential energy curves for several states using different basis sets and discuss their predicted accuracy by comparing our values of the well depths and position with other available results. We then calculate permanent and transition dipole moments for several transitions. Finally for the first time, we calculate the static dipole polarizability of MgH$^+$ as function of the interatomic distance. This study represents the first step towards the modeling of collisions between trapped cold Mg$^+$ ions and H$_2$ molecules.

The electronic structure of the alkaline-earth-atom (Ca, Sr, Ba) hydride molecular ions

M Aymar, Olivier Dulieu

The main electronic properties, namely potential energy curves, permanent and transition dipole moments, static dipole polarizabilities, of the alkaline-earth hydride ion SrH + , as well as of CaH + and BaH + are computed through a full configuration interaction performed in a two-valence electronic configuration space build from a large Gaussian basis set. The doubly charged ionic core of the alkaline-earth atoms is modelled by an effective core potential including core polarization effects. Our study confirms that the properties of these series of molecular ions have very similar patterns, while it is predicted that the major electronic transition between the electronic ground state and the lowest excited state in BaH + is significantly weaker than the one in CaH + and SrH + . Such a study represents a first step towards the modelling of reactive collisions between cold and trapped alkaline-earth ions and H 2 , as well as for precision measurements based on overtone transitions using cold molecular ions.

Systematic trends in electronic properties of alkali hydrides

M Aymar, Johannes Deiglmayr, Olivier Dulieu

Obtaining ultracold samples of dipolar molecules is a current challenge which requires an accurate knowledge of their electronic properties to guide the ongoing experiments. Alkali hydride molecules have permanent dipole significantly larger than those of mixed alkali species and, as pointed out by Taylor-Juarros et al. [Eur. Phys. J. D 31, 213 (2004)] and by Juarros et al. [Phys. Rev. A 73, 041403 (2006)], are thus good candidates for molecule formation. In this paper, using a standard quantum chemistry approach based on pseudopotentials for atomic core representation, large Gaussian basis sets, and effective core polarization potential, we systematically investigate the electronic properties of the alkali hydrides LiH to CsH, in order to discuss general trends of their behavior. We computed (for the first time for NaH, KH, RbH, and CsH) the variation of their static polarizability with the internuclear distance. Moreover, in addition to potential curves, we determine accurate values of permanent and transition dipole moments for ground and excited states depending on the internuclear distance. The behavior of electronic properties of all alkali hydrides is compared to each other, in the light of the numerous other data available in the literature. Finally, the influence of the quality of the representation of the hydrogen electronic affinity in the approach on the results is discussed.

Electronic structure and photoassociation scheme of ultracold (MgK+) molecular ions

Mohamed Farjallah, Dibyendu Sardar, Nayla El‐Kork +2 more

The adiabatic potential energy curves, permanent and transition dipole moments (TDMs) of the highly-excited states of the MgK + molecular ion have been computed as a function of the inter-nuclear distance R. The results are obtained by an ab initio approach involving a non-empirical pseudo-potential for the Mg and K cores, correlation treatment for core valence through an effective core polarisation potential, and full valence configuration interaction. The molecule is thus treated as a two electron system. Ab initio electronic TDM functions are calculated for all dipole-allowed transitions among the 42 states of MgK + . Many of these moment functions exhibit interesting behaviour due to charge transfer or ion-atom pair correlations. The positions of a number of satellite bands are predicted from the potential energy difference curves. We verified our results by performing complete active space self-consistent field calculations followed by a multireference configuration interaction and including Davidson correction. We observe a rather good agreement for most of them especially for the ground and lower excited states. We investigate ion-atom cold collisions at quantum regime. Furthermore, we explore ion-atom elastic collisions at low temperatures, predicting the formation of translationally and rotationally cold molecular ion MgK + in the ground state electronic potential by stimulated Raman type process. Our results are important in the perspective of upcoming experiments aiming at merging cold alkali atom and alkaline-earth ion in a hybrid trap for the creation of cold molecular ions by photoassociation.

Accurate Calculations of Electronic Properties of Alkali Dimers for Ultracold Molecule Formation

M Aymar, Olivier Dulieu, Mourad Telmini +2 more

The realization of ultracold samples of dipolar molecules is a current challenge which requires an accurate knowledge of their electronic properties to guide ongoing experiments. Using a standard quantum chemistry approach based on pseudopotentials for atomic core representation, Gaussian basis sets and effective core polarization potentials, we have investigated the properties of homonuclear and hetero‐nuclear alkali dimers involving all pairs of atoms from Li to Fr. In addition to the potential curves for ground and excited states for various symmetries, we have calculated permanent and transition dipole moments as function of the interatomic distance and of the vibrational level. When appropriate, we will discuss the comparison with previous experimental or theoretical results.

Structure of the alkali-metal-atom + strontium molecular ions: Towards photoassociation and formation of cold molecular ions

M Aymar, R. Guérout, Olivier Dulieu

The potential energy curves, permanent and transition dipole moments, and the static dipolar polarizability, of molecular ions composed of one alkali-metal atom and a strontium ion are determined with a quantum chemistry approach. The molecular ions are treated as effective two-electron systems and are treated using effective core potentials including core polarization, large gaussian basis sets, and full configuration interaction. In the perspective of upcoming experiments aiming at merging cold atom and cold ion traps, possible paths for radiative charge exchange, photoassociation of a cold lithium or rubidium atom and a strontium ion are discussed, as well as the formation of stable molecular ions.

Electronic Structure, Spectroscopy, Cold Ion–Atom Elastic Collision Properties, and Photoassociation Formation Prediction of the (MgCs)+ Molecular Ion

Mohamed Farjallah, Dibyendu Sardar, Bimalendu Deb +1 more

In this paper, we extensively study the electronic structure, interactions, and dynamics of the (MgCs)+ molecular ion. The exchanges between the alkaline atom and the low-energy cationic alkaline earths, which are important in the field of cold and ultracold quantum chemistry, are studied. We use an ab initio approach based on the formalism of non-empirical pseudo-potential for Mg2+ and Cs+ cores, large Gaussian basis sets, and full-valence configuration interaction. In this context, the (MgCs)+ cation is treated as an effective two-electron system. Adiabatic potential energy curves and their spectroscopic constants for the ground and the first 20 excited states of 1,3Σ+ symmetries are determined. Furthermore, we identify the avoided crossings between the electronic states of 1,3Σ+ symmetries. These crossings are related to the charge transfer process between the two ionic limits, Mg/Cs+ and Mg+/Cs. Therefore, vibrational-level spacings and the transition and permanent dipole moments are presented and analyzed. Using the produced potential energy data, the ground-state scattering wave functions and elastic cross-sections are calculated for a wide range of energies. In addition, we predict the formation of a translationally and rotationally cold molecular ion (MgCs)+ in the ground-state electronic potential energy through a stimulated Raman-type process aided by ion–atom cold collision. In the low-energy limit (<1 mK), elastic scattering cross-sections exhibit Wigner law threshold behavior, while in the high-energy limit, the cross-sections act as a function of energy E go as E−1/3. A qualitative discussion about the possibilities of forming cold (MgCs)+ molecular ions by photoassociative spectroscopy is presented.
