Abstract

We consider the spin-1/2 Heisenberg $XXZ$ chain in the regime of large Ising-type anisotropy $\ensuremath{\Delta}$. By a combination of duality and Jordan-Wigner transformations we derive a mapping to weakly interacting spinless fermions, which represent domain walls between the two degenerate ground states. We develop a perturbative expansion in $1/\ensuremath{\Delta}$ for the transverse dynamical spin structure factor at finite temperatures and in an applied transverse magnetic field. We present a unified description for both the low-energy temperature-activated response and the temperature evolution of the $T=0$ two-spinon continuum. We find that the two-spinon continuum narrows in energy with increasing temperature. At the same time spectral weight is transferred from the two-spinon continuum to the low-energy intraband scattering continuum, which is strongly peaked around the position of the (single) spinon dispersion (``Villain mode'').

Finite temperature dynamical structure factors of low dimensional strongly correlated systems

W. D. Goetze, Goetze, Wolf

We determine the dynamical structure factors of two gapped correlated electron systems, namely the Ising model in a strong transverse field and the two-leg spin-1/2 Heisenberg ladder in the limit of strong rung coupling. We consider the low-temperature limit, employing a variety of analytical and numerical techniques. The coherent modes of single-particle excitations, which are delta functions at zero temperature, are shown to broaden asymmetrically in energy with increasing temperature. Firstly, we apply a low-temperature “resummation” inspired by the Dyson equation to a linked-cluster expansion of the two-leg Heisenberg ladder. We include matrix elements to second order in the interaction between states containing up to two particles. A low-frequency response similar to the “Villain mode” is also observed. Next, we apply a cumulant expansion technique to the transverse field Ising model. We resolve the issue of negative spectral weight caused by double pole in the leading self-energy diagram by including a resummation of terms obtained from the six-point function, demonstrating that the perturbation series in 2n-spin correlation functions can be extended to higher orders. The result generalises to higher dimensions and the analytic calculation is compared to a numerical Pade approximant. We outline the extension of this method to the strong coupling ladder. Finally, we compare the previous results to numerical data obtained by full diagonalisation of finite chains and numerical evaluation of the Pfaffian, a method specific to the transverse field Ising chain. The latter method is used for a phenomenological study of the asymmetric broadening as well as an evaluation of fitting functions for the broadened lineshapes.

Finite-temperature dynamic structure factor of the spin-1 XXZ chain with single-ion anisotropy

Florian Lange, Satoshi Ejima, Holger Fehske

Improving matrix-product state techniques based on the purification of the density matrix, we are able to accurately calculate the finite-temperature dynamic response of the infinite spin-1 $\text{XXZ}$ chain with single-ion anisotropy in the Haldane, large-$D$, and antiferromagnetic phases. Distinct thermally activated scattering processes make a significant contribution to the spectral weight in all cases. In the Haldane phase, intraband magnon scattering is prominent, and the on-site anisotropy causes the magnon to split into singlet and doublet branches. In the large-$D$ phase response, the intraband signal is separated from an exciton-antiexciton continuum. In the antiferromagnetic phase, holons are the lowest-lying excitations, with a gap that closes at the transition to the Haldane state. At finite temperatures, scattering between domain-wall excitations becomes especially important and strongly enhances the spectral weight for momentum transfer $\ensuremath{\pi}$.

Dynamics of the spin- Heisenberg chain at intermediate temperatures

Oleg A. Starykh, Anders W. Sandvik, Rajiv R. P. Singh

Combining high-temperature expansions with the recursion method and quantum Monte Carlo simulations with the maximum entropy method, we study the dynamics of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg chain at temperatures above and below the coupling J. By comparing the two sets of calculations, their relative strengths are assessed. At high temperatures, we find that there is a low-frequency peak in the momentum-integrated dynamic structure factor, due to diffusive long-wavelength modes. This peak is rapidly suppressed as the temperature is lowered below J. Calculation of the complete dynamic structure factor S(k,\ensuremath{\omega}) shows how the spectral features associated with the two-spinon continuum develop at low temperatures. We extract the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/${\mathrm{T}}_{1}$ from the \ensuremath{\omega}\ensuremath{\rightarrow}0 limit, and compare with recent experimental results for ${\mathrm{Sr}}_{2}$${\mathrm{CuO}}_{3}$ and ${\mathrm{CuGeO}}_{3}$. We also discuss the scaling behavior of the dynamic susceptibility, and of the static structure factor S(k) and the static susceptibility \ensuremath{\chi}(k). We confirm the asymptotic low-temperature forms S(\ensuremath{\pi})\ensuremath{\sim}[ln (T)${]}^{3\mathrm{/}2}$ and \ensuremath{\chi}(\ensuremath{\pi})\ensuremath{\sim}${\mathrm{T}}^{\mathrm{\ensuremath{-}}1}$[ln (T)${]}^{1\mathrm{/}2}$, expected from previous theoretical studies.

Dynamical Correlation Functions of One-Dimensional Anisotropic Heisenberg Model with Spin 1/2. I: Ising-Like Antiferromagnets

Norikazu Ishimura, Hiroyuki Shiba

Dynamics of one-dimensional Ising-like (strongly anisotropic) antiferromagnets is studied by the perturbation theory from the pure Ising limit and by an exact calculation for finite chains. Both calculations show that the des Cloizeaux-Gaudin (dC-G) “spin-wave” spectrum corresponds neither to a lower bound of excitation continuum nor to the peak position of the transverse response Sxx(Q, ω). A new interpretation is given of the spin-wave spectrum of CsCoCl3 without relying on the dC-G theory. It is also shown that at elevated temperatures Sxx(Q, ω) has a three-peak structure. The longitudinal response Sxx(Q, ω) at low temperatures has a weak peak at the position of spin wave peak, while with increasing temperature Sxx(Q, ω) is dominated by the central peak due to thermally activated solitons, which was predicted by Villain.

Temperature evolution of spin dynamics in extended Kitaev models within an Abrikosov fermion theory beyond mean field

Daiki Sasamoto, Joji Nasu

The $S=1/2$ Kitaev model provides an exactly solvable setting in which spin fractionalization produces itinerant Majorana fermions coupled to an emergent $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge field. In realistic Kitaev magnets, however, non-Kitaev interactions break integrability and make their finite-temperature dynamics difficult to calculate. We develop a finite-temperature parton mean-field theory based on the Abrikosov-fermion representation and incorporate the effects of exchange interactions through the random phase approximation to calculate the dynamical spin structure factor. For the pure Kitaev model, the method reproduces a strong, nearly dispersionless peak at a finite low energy together with a broad continuum at higher energies. It also reproduces the momentum dependence of the dynamical spin structure factor and its temperature evolution, including the downward shift of the low-energy spectral weight, in qualitative agreement with continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo calculations. Within the present theory, the contraction of the continuum is traced to the temperature-induced reduction of the bond amplitudes, which narrows the parton bands and compresses the two-parton phase space. For ferromagnetic Kitaev coupling, the energy of the low-energy peak is minimized at the $Γ$ point for a ferromagnetic Heisenberg interaction and maximized there for an antiferromagnetic interaction. In the ferromagnetic Kitaev-$Γ$ model, the static response develops a finite-momentum softening, indicating an instability toward the period-three magnetic order reported in numerical studies. For uniform-ferromagnetic states selected by a $[111]$ magnetic field, we find that a broad parton continuum coexists with magnonlike dispersive structures, producing spectral features consistent with a spinon-to-magnon crossover.

Finite-temperature dynamical structure factor of alternating Heisenberg chains

A. J. A. James, Fabian H. L. Eßler, Robert Konik

We develop a low-temperature expansion for the finite-temperature dynamical structure factor of the spin half Heisenberg chain with alternating nearest-neighbor exchange in the limit of strong alternation of the exchange constants. We determine both the broadening of the low-lying triplet lines and the contribution of the thermally activated intraband scattering.
