Abstract

We report the observation of an optical vortex in the correlations of photons produced from spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The singularity appears in a nonlocal coordinate plane consisting of 1 degree of freedom of each photon.

Nonlocal optical vortices of any order in spontaneous parametric down-conversion

Austin Puckett, Greg Gbur

We theoretically demonstrate a method for generating and detecting nonlocal optical vortices of any order produced through spontaneous parametric down-conversion. These vortices arise in a nonlocal coordinate system consisting of a single coordinate from each photon. It is shown that independent vortices can be imposed on different sets of nonlocal coordinates.

The singular nature of a noninteger spiral phase plate allows easy manipulation of spatial degrees of freedom of photon states. Using two such devices, we have observed very high-dimensional spatial entanglement of twin photons generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion.

High-dimensional spatial entanglement observed with an electron multiplying CCD camera

D. S. Tasca, M. Edgar, Frauke Izdebski +6 more

Using an electron multiplying CCD camera we observe both image plane (position) and far field (momentum) correlations between photon pairs produced from spontaneous parametric down-conversion when using a 201 x 201 bi-dimensional array of pixels and a flux of around 0.02 photons/pixel. After background subtraction we characterize the strength of signal and idler correlations in both transverse dimensions by applying entanglement and EPR criteria, showing good agreement with the theoretical predictions. The application of such devices in quantum optics could have a wide range, including quantum computation with spatial degrees of freedom of single photons.

Production of non-local optical phase space vortices

Stephen Patrick Walborn, Rafael M. Gomes, A. Salles +2 more

Optical vortices have been observed in a wide variety of optical systems. They can be observed directly in the wavefront of optical beams, or in the correlations between pairs of entangled photons. We present a novel optical vortex which appears in a non-local plane of the two-photon phase space, composed of a single degree of freedom of each photon of an entangled pair. The preparation of this vortex can be viewed as a “non-local” or distributed mode converter. We show how these novel optical vortices of arbitrary order can be prepared in the spatial degrees of freedom of entangled photons.
