Operators for the Aharonov-Anandan and Samuel-Bhandari Phases

Abstract

We construct an operator for the Aharonov-Anandan phase for time independent Hamiltonians. This operator is shown to generate the motion of cyclic quantum systems through an equation of evolution involving only geometric quantities, i.e. the distance between quantum states, the geometric phase and the total length of evolution. From this equation, we derive an operator for the Samuel and Bhandari phase (SB-phase) for non cyclic evolutions. Finally we show how the SB-phase can be used to construct an operator corresponding to a quantum clock which commutator with the Hamiltonian has a canonical expectation value.

Cyclic quantum evolution and Aharonov-Anandan geometric phases in SU(2) spin-coherent states

Eric G. Layton, Youhong Huang, Shih‐I Chu

We show that cyclic quantum evolution can be realized and the Aharonov-Anandan (AA) geometric phase can be determined for any spin-j system driven by periodic fields. Two methods are extended for the study of this problem: the generalized spin-coherent-state technique and the Floquet quasienergy approach. Using the former approach, we have developed a generalized Bloch-sphere model and presented a SU(2) Lie-group formulation of the AA geometric phase in the spin-coherent state. We show that the AA phase is equal to j times the solid angle enclosed by the trajectory traced out by the tip of a generalized Bloch vector. General analytic formulas are obtained for the Bloch vector trajectory and the AA geometric phase in terms of external physical parameters. In addition to these findings, we have also approached the same problem from an alternative but complementary point of view without recourse to the concept of coherent-state terminology. Here we first determine the Floquet quasienergy eigenvalues and eigenvectors for the spin-j system driven by periodic fields. This in turn allows the construction of the time-evolution propagator, the total wave function, and the AA geometric phase in a more general fashion.

Unitary transformation approach to the cyclic evolution of SU(1, 1) and SU(2) time-dependent systems and geometrical phases

Mustapha Maamache

Using the time-dependent unitary transformation instead of the invariant operator, the solutions of SU(1, 1) and SU(2) time-dependent quantum systems are obtained. It is shown that the evolution operator is decomposed into the product form of two unitary operators in such a way that one of them has the same periodicity as the Hamiltonian and the other correspond to the Floquet operator which gives the cyclic states and their associated phases over one period of the evolution. The non-adiabatic Berry's (or Aharonov-Anandan) phases are determined totally by such a unitary transformation.

Aharonov-Anandan geometric phase for spin-1/2 periodic Hamiltonians

David J. Fernández C., Luis Miguel Nieto, M. A. del Olmo +1 more

The authors calculate exactly the Aharonov-Anandan phase for the evolution of a spin-1/2 in some periodic time-dependent magnetic fields, and give a discussion of the results versus the adiabatic ones. In particular, they analyse the existence of cyclic states and show explicit examples of systems with a prescribed value of the AA phase for all cyclic evolutions.

Geometric aspects of noncyclic quantum evolutions

Arun Kumar Pati

The geometric phase is defined for any arbitrary quantum evolution using a ``reference section'' of the bundle covering the curve in the projective Hilbert space. A canonical one-form is defined whose line integral gives the desired geometric phase. It is manifestly gauge, phase, and reparametrization invariant for all quantum evolutions. A simple proof of the vanishing nature of the geometric phase along the geodesic is given. Also, an elementary proof of the nonadditive nature of the geometric phase is given. In the limit of cyclic evolution of a pure quantum state, this phase reduces to the Aharonov and Anandan phase, precisely. It is observed that in addition to the geometric phase, other geometric structures exist, such as the ``length'' and ``distance'' during any arbitrary quantum evolution. The relations among all of these geometric quantities are pointed out. Finally, two simple examples are studied to illustrate the ideas introduced in this paper.

Structure of the solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, universal existence of the cyclic quantum evolution, and geometric phases

Lian-Ao Wu

It is shown that the cyclic evolution posed by Aharonov and Anandan [Phys. Rev. Lett. 58, 1593 (1987)] universally exists in any quantum system: cyclic evolution occurs for special initial wave functions, whatever the concrete form of the Hamiltonian. The above results are illustrated and some specific geometric phases are given.

Time-evolution operator and geometric phase for a system with a su(1,1) [semiprodsum]s h(4) Hamiltonian

Jing‐Bo Xu, Tiezheng Qian, Xiao-Chun Gao

In this paper, the exact solution and time-evolution operator for the system with a su(1,1)${\mathrm{?}}_{\mathit{s}}$h(4) Hamiltonian are found by making use of Lewis-Riesenfeld quantum theory. The time-evolution operator is then used to derive the Aharonov-Anandan phase. Finally, the noncyclic evolution is discussed with the help of the Aharonov-Anandan phase and the Berry phase is calculated by taking the adiabatic limit.
