Two mode photon bunching effect as witness of quantum criticality in circuit QED

Ying Wang

We suggest a scheme to probe critical phenomena at a quantum phase transition (QPT) using the quantum correlation of two photonic modes simultaneously coupled to a critical system. As an ex-perimentally accessible physical implementation,a circuit QED system is formed by a capacitively coupled Josephson junction qubit array interacting with one superconducting transmission line reso-nator (TLR). It realizes an Ising chain in the transverse field (ICTF) which interacts with the two mag-netic modes propagating in the TLR. We demonstrate that in the vicinity of criticality the originally in-dependent fields tend to display photon bunching effects due to their interaction with the ICTF. Thus, the occurrence of the QPT is reflected by the quantum characteristics of the photonic fields.

Microwave degenerate parametric down-conversion with a single cyclic three-level system in a circuit-QED setup

Zhihai Wang, C. P. Sun, Yong Li

With the assistance of a cyclic three-level artificial atom of a superconducting flux quantum circuit interacting with a two-mode superconducting transmission-line resonator, we study theoretically the degenerate microwave parametric down-conversion (PDC) in a circuit-QED system. By adiabatically eliminating the excited states of the three-level artificial atom, we obtain an effective microwave PDC Hamiltonian for the two resonator modes (i.e., the fundamental and second-harmonic modes). The corresponding PDC efficiency in our model can be much larger than that in the similar circuit-QED system based on a single two-level superconducting qubit [K. Moon and S. M. Girvin, Phys. Rev. Lett. 95, 140504 (2005)]. Furthermore, we investigate the squeezing and bunching behavior of the fundamental resonator mode resulting from the coherent driving to the second-harmonic one.

Generalized Photon Bunching Effect as a Result of Multi-Photon Constructive Interference

Ping‐Xing Chen

The discovery of photon bunching effect is an important milestone of quantum optics. The attempt to explain it leads to the development of the techniques in quantum optics.Nowadays,it′s thought that the physics behind the photon bunching effect in the second-order coherence is two-photon interference. This paper shows that there are similar generalized bunching effects in higher-order coherence. We also claim that the generalized photon bunching effect is a result of multi-photon interference due to indistinguishability of photons. In some typical optical circuit,N-photon interference can let the enhancement factor be up to N!.
