Abstract

We study ultracold fermionic atoms trapped in an optical lattice with harmonic confinement by combining the real-space dynamical mean-field theory with a two-site impurity solver. By calculating the local particle density and the pair potential in the systems with different clusters, we discuss the stability of a supersolid state, where an $s$-wave superfluid coexists with a density-wave state of checkerboard pattern. It is clarified that a confining potential plays an essential role in stabilizing the supersolid state. The phase diagrams are obtained for several effective particle densities.

Supersolid State of Ultracold Fermions in Optical Lattice

We study ultracold fermionic atoms trapped in an optical lattice with harmonic confinement by means of the dynamical mean-field approximation. It is demonstrated that a supersolid state, where an s-wave superfluid coexists with a density-wave state with a checkerboard pattern, is stabilized by attractive onsite interactions on a square lattice. Our new finding here is that a confining potential plays an invaluable role in stabilizing the supersolid state. We establish a rich phase diagram at low temperatures, which clearly shows how the insulator, the density wave and the superfluid compete with each other to produce an intriguing domain structure. Our results shed light on the possibility of the supersolid state in fermionic optical lattice systems.

Supersolid state in a fermionic optical lattice system

Akihisa Koga, Takuji Higashiyama, Kensuke Inaba +2 more

We study ultracold fermionic atoms loaded in an optical lattice with a confining potential. By combining dynamical mean-field approximation with a two-site impurity solver, we demonstrate that a supersolid state, where an s -wave superfluid coexists with a density-wave state of checkerboard pattern, is stabilized by attractive onsite interactions on a square lattice. The stability of the supersolid state in the thermodynamic limit is also addressed.

Superfluid properties of ultracold fermionic atoms in two-dimensional optical lattices

Yusuke Fujihara, Akihisa Koga, Norio Kawakami

We investigate two-component ultracold fermionic atoms with attractive interactions trapped in a two-dimensional optical lattice at zero temperature. By introducing a superfluid trial state with spatially modulated order parameters, we perform the variational Monte Carlo simulations to treat the correlation effects beyond mean-field treatments. It is shown that there appears a strong tendency to the formation of a density wave state in the regions with specific values of local atom density. We then analyze two kinds of perturbations to the superfluid state and show that a coexisting state of superfluid and density wave ordering, a sort of supersolid state, can be stabilized. It is discussed how the trap potential and the resulting spatial modulation of the superfluid state affect the momentum distributions and the noise correlation functions.

Supersolid phases of dipolar fermions in a two-dimensional-lattice bilayer array

Arturo Camacho-Guardian, R. Paredes

Supersolid phases as a result of a coexistence of superfluid and density ordered checkerboard phases are predicted to appear in ultracold Fermi molecules confined in a bilayer array of two-dimensional square optical lattices. We demonstrate the existence of these phases within the inhomogeneous mean-field approach. In particular, we show that tuning the interlayer separation distance at a fixed value of the chemical potential produces different fractions of superfluid, density ordered, and supersolid phases.

Superfluid-insulator transition of two-band fermionic atom systems in optical lattices

Takuji Higashiyama, Kensuke Inaba, Sei-ichiro Suga

We study the multiband effects on ultracold fermionic atoms in optical lattices by two-site dynamical mean-field theory. We find that the density wave state becomes stable for a small orbital splitting region. As the orbital splitting is increased, the transition from the density wave state to the superfluid state occurs. By systematically changing the orbital splitting and the attractive interaction, we obtain the phase diagram at half-filling.

Dynamical properties of ultracold fermions with attractive interactions in an optical lattice

Akihisa Koga, Philipp Werner

We study dynamical properties of ultracold fermions with attractive interactions by means of dynamical mean-field theory and a continuous-time quantum Monte Carlo method. By calculating the pair potential and the density of states, we discuss the stability of the superfluid state. We also show that when holes are doped into the fermionic optical lattice system with intermediate interaction strength, the quasi-particle peak smears and a gap structure instead appears in the dilute system.
