Applications of the Jacobi group to Quantum Mechanics

Stefan Berceanu, Andrei H Gheorghe

Published Dec 2, 2008• 18 citations
arXivHTMLPDF

Abstract

Infinitesimal holomorphic realizations for the Schrödinger-Weil representation and the discrete series representations of the Jacobi group are constructed. Explicit expressions of the basic differential operators are obtained. The squeezed states for the unitary irreducible representation of the Jacobi group are introduced. Matrix elements of the squeezed operators, expectation values of polynomial operators in infinitesimal generators of the Jacobi group, the squeezing region and a description of Mandel's parameter are presented.

The Jacobi Group and the Squeezed States—Some Comments

Stefan Berceanu, Piotr Kielanowski, S. Twareque Ali +3 more

The generalized coherent states attached to the Jacobi group realize the squeezed states. Imposing hermitian conjugacy to the generators of the Jacobi algebra, we find out the form of the weight function appearing in the scalar product. We show effectively the orthonormality of the base functions with respect to the scalar product. From the explicit form of the reproducing kernel, we find out the expression of the multiplier in a holomorphic representation of the Jacobi group.

Quantum Mechanics associated with a Finite Group

Robert William Johnson

I describe, in the simplified context of finite groups and their representations, a mathematical model for a physical system that contains both its quantum and classical aspects. The physically observable system is associated with the space containing elements fxf for f an element in the regular representation of a given finite group G. The Hermitian portion of fxf is the Wigner distribution of f whose convolution with a test function leads to a mathematical description of the quantum measurement process. Starting with the Jacobi group that is formed from the semidirect product of the Heisenberg group with its automorphism group SL(2,F{N}) for N an odd prime number I show that the classical phase space is the first order term in a series of subspaces of the Hermitian portion of fxf that are stable under SL(2,F{N}). I define a derivative that is analogous to a pseudodifferential operator to enable a treatment that parallels the continuum case. I give a new derivation of the Schrodinger-Weil representation of the Jacobi group. Keywords: quantum mechanics, finite group, metaplectic. PACS: 03.65.Fd; 02.10.De; 03.65.Ta.

We analyze the relationship between the covering of the Jacobi group and the squeezed states. We attach some nonclassical states to the Jacobi group. The matrix elements of the Jacobi group are presented.

Rotations, squeezing, and the unitary transformation operator from individual particles to Jacobi variables

F. C. Khanna, A. Mann, Y. Takahashi

A unitary operator for the transformation from individual particles to Jacobi variables is constructed explicitly for particles of arbitrary masses. It is expressed as a product of rotation and squeezing operators using only canonical variables.

Symplectic groups in quantum optics

Alfred Wünsche

Starting from the symplectic Lie groups Sp (2 n , ) of an n -mode system in classical and quantum mechanics we discuss, in particular, Sp (2, )~ SO (2,1) for a single mode and Sp (4, )~ SO (3,2) with some of its important subgroups such as SU (1,1)~ Sp (2, ) and SU (2). We then look at their applications in quantum optics (squeezing, phase states, beamsplitter and polarization). We explicitly construct the root scheme of the Lie algebra sp (4, ) in two different bases as it is an important means for the investigation of the group properties and the construction of the irreducible representations. Apart from the well known realizations of Sp (2, ) by single-mode and two-mode systems, we discuss some other realizations of this group by fractal combinations of boson operators.
